Final Fantasy VII Remake

I've not played the original Final Fantasy 7, but i've heard nothing but good reviews about it so I am kinda looking forward to the re-make of this game. The graphics look incredible. Cloud sounds like a great character too. My partner, who is a fan of the original game is seriously excited for this game too!

initial reactions, i'm feeling more of a sense of apprehension than happiness about this news. mainly because my previous concerns over it not turning out the way i'd like is a possibility. but I am pleased for the people that really wanted this to happen.

there is a long way to go, my feelings about this will most likely change over the course of its development. but I am also worried it won't honour the original game's character. if they lose this, then they lose a major part of the game, it would be like amputating a limb. in fact, it would be more like ripping out the heart, it would simply be a technical upgrade without ff7's soul.

So after digesting part of the hype and emotions for this remake I'm feeling a little apprehensive. I started thinking up ways in which they could improve on the original and things they should avoid doing and I'm just gonna go ahead and post my ideas right here.

What made the original so great in my opinion was how everything came together so well. The soundtrack, visuals, story, environments and characters combined to hit the right notes at the right times and in such a way that I feel hasn't been matched in any Final Fantasy since. For the remake to be a success for me they'll have to recapture those powerful moments.
obviously...their not going to push an entirely new vision.
I'm also feeling a little scared with regards to the art direction. I'm assuming that's Barret walking in front of who is clearly Cloud, but they look a lot more like their Advent Children selves and a lot less like their FFVII selves which gives me the impression SE might be going for the more "realistic" approach rather than the stylised look of the original. I don't really mind that approach per se, obviously it's a lot harder to keep things realistic without bringing the characters' proportions into check, but I think one of the original's strongest features was it's art design (along with it's soundtrack). I'd hate for the environments and characters to go from what they were in the original to something similar to FFXV, which looks sterile by comparison. If the art design isn't similar to the original the remake won't be doing the original justice and I feel like a lot of the character of the game will have been lost. I honestly wouldn't mind it if Barret was twice the size of Cloud and Tifa's breasts made up a quarter of her body weight. I want to see the colour of the original and not Cloud in his black get up and Tifa in her black get up and Yuffie in her black get up etc etc...

I hate it when people say 'their Advent children' design. Advent children introduced their original appearance in the introduction. so we have a basis of what they will look like. also....final fantasy dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core. Their original design as meant for the more cartoony aspect. I doubt heir going to give them their advent children outfits (and when i say advent children outfits, i mean the timeline of advent children, not the movie as it covers some of the aspects)
The environments too. The reactor in the trailer looks amazing, but again I'm getting the impression that they're moving in the futuristic direction rather than the industrial era inspired steam punk look of the original. I'd prefer it to look more like the pic below than the setting for the next Metal Gear Solid game. Art direction is important, not polish. I don't want to hear how they had to remove a host of features because for some reason being able to count the hairs on Red XIII's body is more important than actual content.
It looks the same as it did before. I highly foubt their going to change the design. We have Crisis Core as a basis too. so they can't giveit a new futuristic feel.

The soundtrack of the original was arguably the game's best feature but it obviously needs remastering. I really hope they don't do something foolish like attempt to fix what isn't broken by changing tracks that play at key moments.
When has SE ever done that?
I do think that they can add features and rework certain things to improve on the original. First off, the original isn't all that challenging and certain spells and abilities are just plain obsolete. I'd prefer for them to keep the battle system of VII, but maybe use this remake to expand on what FFX gave us with the ATB bar. I'd hate to see a battle system like XIII implemented. They should expand on the Goldsaucer, in particular the Chocobo Racing and Breeding and of course the Battle Square. What I'm thinking is maybe more chocobo colours and chocobo attributes in addition to stamina and speed. The Battle Arena should maybe introduce new modes of combat like full party mode, solo, a mode for each character and so on. Maybe a revenge mode too for boss fights already fought in game, like the red scorpion boss fought at the beginning but at maxed level and with abilities fit to challenge a high level party.
ATB bar? the ATB system is great. But if their going to add that in, add it in as an "option". Keep in mind, that is one of the fery things that will CHANGE THE VISION of the game. everything else i dont mind. we are already getting ff7 G-bike.

Also! More enemy skills please and more materia while we're at it with a lot more combinations. Break the damage limit to but only let critical hits of massive damage attacks come close to the limit, everything else should be in proportion. A physical attack should never be as effective as a Fire 3 (renamed Firaga please) that hits the weak spot - and costs MP!
obviously its going to be renamed firaga, just like FF1, 2, and 3 renamed their spells.

What they shouldn't do is shoehorn in unnecessary dialogue and cutscenes to prop up the spin off titles. Maybe a little more to facilitate people's understanding of the original story seeing as many felt the story was unclear.

to me, if they do the remake good I will love it. I don't want ANY added scenes, I don't want any added dialog or options. I don't want extra memories of Zack or anything like that. I pretty much just want a remake that is just redone graphics and gameplay... even if they add clerithy scenes, it would put me off if they changed what happened in the original.

that's why they're called remakes and not 'do-overs'. if they add anything that wasn't in the original it won't be a remake, and quite honestly i'll be pissed off. and if they take the ffx novel route and they mess up cloud and aerith's canon relationship that would just be even worse. :rage:

what i'd hope for in a FFVII remake;

*In depth look into the Cetra/Jenova (I'm flabbergasted that we haven't had this yet)

*Enhanced/redone graphics (more realistic looking like the latest games)

*Translation fixes

*Battle system enhancements (something more interactive like ff15)

*More minigames (maybe some that even go online, like chocobo/motorcycle racing... I mean, how awesome would that be to go up against other fans!)

*LEAVE THE MUSIC ALONE, I would just like them redone in actual instruments and stuff (less computer-y sounding)

* DLC for like costumes and stuff (nothing ridiculous, though--no bikinis or stupid shit)

That's all I can think of at the moment, but that would be wonderful.

Ok....so basically, you want the exact OPPOSITE of what a remake is intended for. All remakes add some additional aspect. either graphically, story-wise or both. FF7 is going to do it. If "remasters" such as FF10 and 10-2 added additional audio, expect ff7 to do something similar. remakes literally means "re-make".

if you don't want any do-overs thend on't ask for any additions whatsover. you basically admitting that there is NOTHING that ff7 needs to add or remove, and all they need is a graphical update. you can't be for one thing, and then expect larger changes in another all while claiming you are looking for whats best.

It concerns me the amount of people looking for the battle system to be redesigned and the amount of people complaining it would look stupid to have a classic FF battle system where the characters are just "standing there". These are the same so called fans that complained about lack of real time battles for years particularly during the PS1 era of FFs and we have those fans to thank for the battle system of the likes of FF:LR and FF XIII lack of interaction and more like watching a movie. I would not want to see this game turned into a hybrid action RPG clone like that. People wanted a remake because they felt the game was close to perfect as it was. Is crisis core and dirge of cerberus not there for those who want that in FFVII world rather than seeing the original game turned into ff xv or ff lr??? The ATB can be enhanced to the point where it was at in FF X-2 without damaging the original battle system in my opinion. A lot of things sucked in FF X-2 but the pacing of the ATB was very fast and just right in that game take out the stupid dresspheres and replace with materia/equipment/limit breaks and you would be flying I feel. I passed FF 1 for first time last night and enjoyed it immensely I didn't worry or care about the battles been real time or not cos what I've learned going back and playing through all the old FFs that the whole standing there that people are complaining about that they say would look "awful" in modern graphics is what defines FF as original from all the others would it make sense in our world/universe fighting like that? Nope but its not our world/universe its the world of FF VII they have Materia and Magic we don't where is people's sense of escapism gone!!!!!! Sorry rant over. But I aint sure how much I'm looking forward to this if a section of FF Fanbase are trying to push Square to turn it into an action RPG. And I'll join others in saying FF VIII and IX deserve remakes too. VIII is very close to my heart.

The moment I saw 'Remake' I just went nuts. Luckily no-one was around to see my fan-boy meltdown.

I have mixed feelings about this remake. With Square's recent form over the years, churning out one underwhelming FF game after the next, I'm worried and excited at the same time.

Here's the direction I think Square should take. The battle-system while I loved it at the time I don't think it should be brought back. I think a real-time battle-system with no random encounters should be used and in my view that's the approach Square are more likely to take. My concern is the game ending up as a mindless hack-and-slash, although I think if they took the battle-system from Kingdom Hearts and built upon that it could make for some brilliantly urgent and dynamic third-person fights. I liked how you could change the AI of your party members in Kingdom Hearts too, that should be used, assuming they go with real-time combat of course.

The Materia system should be left alone (just build upon it) and the mass of expository in the game I don't think could ever be voice-acted, not all of it. There's just too much. Anyone remember the 40 minute flash-back at Kalm? Jesus. It was so long with so much exposition it even had save-points throughout. The game should have different hard-setting options too because the people already familar with the game will probably breeze through it no problem on the normal setting. Items should also be carried over like in FFX-2 to increase the re-playability, although I imagine there will probably be loads of DLC. Other than that they should leave everything untouched. The game is almost perfect as it is.

How do you improve on perfection?

I'm sorry sweetie, I love ya and all, but wtf? How can you ask for them to not touch a single thing but "Oh, let's throw some more mini-games and this and that in there"?

Obviously, the game is undergo some changes. But with the interviews released, nothing drastic. Wall Market etc will still happen, and although it won't be charmy chibi style, I think when a super srs gritty game throws Cloud in drag like that, it's going to make people laugh and bring them back to 1997 when it first happened.

The game could use some enhancements like the battle system.. a nice blend of action ATB like X-2 but maybe more active like XV, who knows.

And retconning? Why not. The compilation exists for a reason. Throw in some easter eggs for DoC and AC that makes people go :watching: and some additions of storyline and references to what happened in BC and CC. Make it complete.

Another thing that we need to look at is the character voice over. Who should cast who? Or should Square Enix use the same voice over from the previous Final Fantasy VII title?

It should be the same as Ff7 advent children. The voices were perfect for original cast. Even for red xiii

Red XIII and Aerith need to be recast, imo. Granted he had one line, it didn't really suit Red XIII who is kind of like a teenage kid in animal form. Granted, he has a lot of wisdom and knowledge, you really feel his youth in the way he talks to Bugen. And Aerith, when Mena Suvari was voicing her for a couple titles, had very little personality or energy. I hope Andrea Bowen will voice her again, if she can kind of mature it a little bit.

I have a huge issue with the trailer - is this is a remake, or a sequel? It's called a remake, but the content of the trailer suggests something different.

Meteor is mentioned in the past tense, and the Advent Children period is mentioned("the period of silence").

I'm wondering if Square have got their heads screwed on with this.

Remake or sequel Square? If I can't even tell this from the trailer then something is wrong somewhere.

Based on what I've seen I think they're going to royally stuff this up.

It's definitely a remake and not a sequel. Listen to the narration more closely...
Long ago, we looked upon a foreboding sky. The memory of the star that threatened all burns eternal in our hearts.

The narrator is talking about fans who played the original game (and the creative team behind it!) and not forgetting about the sight of Meteor, which is iconic. For many of us (especially in Europe who didn't get any of the NES or SNES titles), Final Fantasy VII was the first FF game that we played and made us fall in love with the series. For others it was a huge leap from what they had known. The game holds a special place in our hearts indeed.

In its wake came an age of silence. Yet with each fond remembrance, we knew those encountered were not forgotten, that some day we would see them again. Perhaps it was no more than wishful thinking.
Reference to the years of fans crying out for a remake. There have been rumors, hoaxes, and much wishful thinking (the release of various entries of the compilation contributed to that) ever since that tech-demo did the rounds for the PS2. The game and its characters were certainly not forgotten and we hoped for a remake someday but it looked as if we would never get it. I still won't believe it until I see the game in the stores!

But after the long calm, there are the beginnings of a stir. The reunion at hand may bring joy, it may bring fear, but let us embrace whatever it brings. For they are coming back. At last the promise has been made.
Square Enix knows that Final Fantasy VII is too big of a thing to mess around with too much. Yet they also know they can't just release the same game with modern graphics. This 'reunion' of fan and game will surely disappoint some hardcore members of the fan base whilst others will enjoy it for what it is. SE have been teasing us for so long and finally it is happening. Final Fantasy VII is coming back.

What I don't get is why they are calling a meteor a star??? :wtf:

I can think of a few reasons.

It may be to be poetic. Despite the apocalyptic doom that the meteor would have caused to the planet, since it was stopped all the people on the planet got to see was a pretty light display in the sky. Therefore the imagery of a star, a beautiful thing, is more appropriate in the context of this sort of narration (where the narrator is also saying many things, but really is breaking the fourth wall and is speaking directly to the fans - what he says he says mainly to us, but they've twisted it to try and make it seem as if he's actually talking about the FFVII universe). Calling it a rocky meteor isn't as poetic as calling it a star. It's a subtle thing meant for us.

Also, since meteors that fall and break up in our atmosphere are referred to on our planet as 'shooting stars', then the meteor was almost a kind of star to the people below looking up at it.

That's actually terrifying...

We all knew about the angel statue's reflection... We all thought "Oh, okay, flowers.... Aerith."

Look closely... It only has one wing... Plus the black feather falling down... Who do we know that has one black wing? I kinda had goosebumps realizing. :lew: I didn't notice the angel statue only had one wing... until now. :8F:

Again, speculation is that it may be folded back, but I thought it was pretty damn clever. xD

Genesis better not be in this remake! He is defeated prior to the events of the original game and isn't 'revived' until years later at the end of Dirge of Cerberus. No need to add him to Cloud's flashbacks or make any other appearances aside from maybe being mentioned by NPC's or hidden tid-bits that allude to his existence.

I feel Genesis is going to be in it in some way, along with Angeal and other people... probably even Cissnei and the original AVALANCHE.

People that want this to stay 100% original to the FFVII of 1997 are better off getting the pc port or just playing wherever they got it.

I feel this will be the same game in some ways and completely new game in other ways... best to accept this now in my mind
