I'm a little upset that you can only control one character during battles. Anyone else concerned about this, but I really didn't like the Final Fantasy 12 battle system and I feel this is kinda similar. Thoughts?

I think the battle system is extremely more dynamic than the one in ff12 where you just configure your gambits and leave your party fighting while you're asleep..^^"

It is a little bit annoying in the beginning that you can only control one character but the more you play, the more you realize that you kind of indirectly control all of your characters through the Optima system (that reminded me of the old job systems or the Dressphere system in X-2).

Also, the fights are really fast, you barely have time to control your main character and if you are fast enough, you can switch Optimas and stuff to make your battle more strategic and less boring, but having to control all of them would just have been overwhelming for most of the players.

Besides, the game pattern is : [Walking straight - Fights - Walking straight - Cut scene - Walking straight - Boss Fight] so if you are already bored by the battle system, the only thing left you have are the cut scenes and that is definitely not worthed $70 ^^"

I'm actually old school on this particular subject. In my eyes turn based fighting was the way of final fantasy and I think it always should be. I miss having that original battle engine on FF games.

i like the idea of making a chain of attacks, but in the turn based system you could incorporate that and have characters performing actions together (like IX with Magic Sword for Steiner using ViVi's magic)

i like X-2's speed and fluidity and i think if you combined all the elements that itd be great

I am looking forward to trying this new system I hope it is alot more perfected then the system that we had in 12. However I am worried that the more they move away from the turn base system the more Final Fantasy will move away from RPG and more towards ACTION RPG. I personally love Action rpgs but its hard to wrap your mind around FF becoming that completely. Here is hoping Versus is awesome.

From what i have seen i think it looks pretty fun, Change is good and it stops things from getting stale. The chaining moves look pretty cool, all flued and sexy :P although from what i have seen i dont like the new Mana system.

I can assure you that the FFXIII battle system should make you happy if you liked FFX but didn't like FFXII. I personally love FFX and think it's the best game ever but could never get into FFXII due to the battle system, drove me mental!
However, I have got my hands on a copy of the Japanese version of the game and am loving the battle system. It allows you to control what type of attacks do through Paradigm Shifts and you can change those tactics on the fly. Feels fantastic to play, lots of fun :D

I'm not exactly too sure about this new battle system, but since I didn't mind Final Fantasy X's battle system, I'm expecting this one to work out for me. Then again, I'm not too fussy about game play as opposed to story line, so I'm less caring about the battle system. Nevertheless, I doubt there would be much about the battle system that would displease me.

So long they do not miss out too much on skill customization and freedom in mobility, I'm cool.

final fantasy X had my favorite battle system. i'm just not sure how i feel about this cuz i don't like how you can only control one character.

Well battling and the level up system is the total opposite isn't it? Isn't battle system how they actually fight and how they level up/ great strong is the level up system?? If i'm right then XIII thing with Xs sphere grid is how they level right?? not how they fight. Just a tad confused. =/

I think XIII's level up system has been compared the X's sphere grid. But XIII has the Crystallis system or something. We you complete battles you get crystal points which you can earn new abilities. But I don't think you can take different paths like you could on the sphere grid.

^^ Yeah, I've heard of that but i'm saying... never mind XD. I'm just going to confuse myself... and that won't be good D=
I found a video over it if any of you guys are interested =]

Since I am such a sucker for the old Turn-base system, I found it hard to fancy the setup in Final Fantasy XII, it just didn't appeal to me.

From what I've seen and heard, I can say that it looks interesting aaand I'd probably just leave it at that.

what i seen and herd i like it first being able to get your oter guys to do what neeed with out always atchng over them then only being able to control one make it a lot easier just hope they do ti right in my opinon 12 was a mess up one

TRU DAT.

IMO, Squeenix is trying to cater too much to the action oriented Western culture. I'd take a slow turn based battle (ala FFIX) over FFXII or FFXIII's battle system any day.
It just bothers me that, for the most part, the game's gonna play itself in battle...

why can't SE just leave well enough alone. turn based battle pretty much defined FF in my opinion. The game succeeded fans were happy. Why they keep trying to mess with it? Change doesn't always mean better. And why do they want it to look more like an action game? FINAL FANTASY IS NOT AN ACTION GAME. it'd be like trying to turn street fighter into a turn based battle system. Hopefully this will be better than 12's. Actually, anything would be better than 12's.

The battle system in Final Fantasy XIII is my favorite system by far, I wasn't keen on the whole waiting system in Final Fantasy VII and such, but I like the active time situations and having it head first. I hope this continues to appear in the upcoming games.

Battle system!

I'm trying really really hard to like this game, and I do for the most part. The battle system seems like good fun, however I'm not that big of a fan of the fact that you can only control one character, and the rest are just automated with what your paradigm is . . . I'm around 5 hours in. I understand that in a while ill get to choose who I want in my party, the game chooses that for ya right now, I assume that you only ever get to control the commander however?

Anyone else have other thoughts on the battle system?

Its nothing special. Honestly, if you break it down, it is EXACTLY the same system that Final Fantasy games have been using for years. All that flashy jumping around and the Paradigm system they tacked on are just there to disguise the fact. There is nothing remotely new or revolutionary about it.

Still, I like it. Being able to swap between characters in-battle like you could in FFXII would have been nice, but the AI, thus far, has been competent (for the most part...a little slow at points, but then maybe I just wasn't fast enough) and quite helpful. After Gambits, Paradigms are something of a backward step, but they're not damning.

What DOES bother me is that, if the lead character dies, its game over. Whoever thought that was a good idea should be strung up and burned. It makes things very tedious, because if a group of enemies decides to gang up on you, its going to take forever to kill them, as you more or less have to do it by yourself, as your other characters provide the neccessary healing...which may or may not come on time, since you can't control them manually and have them heal you.

Overall, its a serviceable battle system. Not as good as XII's - it feels like this should have come BEFORE, not AFTER - but still good.

well with this fast paced of a battle system it seems like having to control everyone at once would get stressful. so I don't mind it as much. I kinda like the paradigm thing.

I'm about 7 hours in, and yeah I would like to chose my own party, but I'm not complaining haha, I will eventually be able to, so its no biggie for now.

plus we're looking at 100+ hours of gameplay (or so I've heard) so there will be plenty of time for that in the future
