FFXIII Final Fantasy XIII General Discussion Thread

So I didn't even realize that I'm like 3 and a half hours in and I'm on chapter 3 already. I just got to the point where you're at the lake place and now we have abilities. This is exciting, yet intimidating as to how I'm going to develop the party. When I play tonight, I'll have to wrap my head around it a little to come up with a plan.
As far as developing the party goes, most of your choices come down to which role to spend CP on for each character. You should be more worried about trying to figure our what paradigms work when.

Speaking of developing, I leveled up my first two roles this morning. I was happy.

So I have to ask - how many times have you guys fell asleep during battle or at least finding yourself falling asleep? :wacky: It's happened 2 or times already. I'm not saying it's boring, but I think it's the music that's doing it. :hmmm: Either that or I'm just really tired. But especially on Chapter 4, that jazz-like music was just horrible. >.> I wanted it to stop playing the song already.

The Vile Peaks music was just... vile. :wacky:

I certainly haven't fallen asleep during battle. o.o It's so fast paced, I don't see that happening to me, lol.

The Sunleth Waterscape almost sent me to sleep because of the music...although its one of the nicer songs I've come across thus far.

Overall, the music for this game is awful, though - I'm sick of the main theme already. Every battle, every event, every five bloody seconds...they didn't even have the decency to add the tradition victory theme at the end of battles...

I'm on Chapter 7 at the moment...its quite a long one. Might give the game a rest for a day now though, since Return to Ostagar FINALLY hit the PSN, and I've got to finish my current file before Awakening comes out this time next week...

The Vile Peaks is so far the area I like the least. I'm glad that the music in the Peaks isn't well received - so it's not just me. xD In fact I simply muted my TV completely except for the cutscenes.

I love the flashbacks though - and the fact that you slowly gain a full account of what happened during these Thirteen Days. They really have put a lot of attention when writing the story and scripting the events. It is getting rather good at the moment, and it's good to think that I'm really anticipating for what is yet to come.

No real problems so far - though I had a couple of confused moments when I was fighting the Shiva sisters earlier on. I guess I need to actually read tutorials in the future.

I should probably be getting this game for Easter early next month, and I will probably use quite a lot of magic, since everything is full again after each battle anyways, so becoming unable to cast spells for a long time in a dungeon or something won't be a problem. :P

Wondering about the Daze spell though, I'm hearing from Damon that he hasn't run into it for any of the characters yet, and he is on Chapter 11, so, I must ask, when the heck is the soonest a character can learn this? Should be useful when I don't plan to physically attack a whole lot. xD

I'm not that far in the game yet, but I don't think that the battles could put me to sleep. I love the mechanics of the system. It makes it very fast paced and challenging at times. Some of the music in the game could probably be changed, like the jazz piece, but other than that I love it.

Also, the story so far is very good. Brought a tear to my eye twice. Although I am VERY emotionally attached to the characters and have been since the very beginning.

Is anyone else having mixed feelings about Hope? Sometimes I feel like I love him and other times I just want to punch him. And I'm not sure if it's just me, but I'm spotting a number of similarities between him and Tidus, and I'm not liking that at all.

I actually quite like him even if he does act a bit brattish. >.< He's just so cute and so young and
just lost his mum. >.<
I wanna go give him a big hug like Vanille keeps doing. XD

I am so in love with Snow and Serah. =0

They are the sweetest couple ever. <3

I've already gotten so emotional in some parts as well. >.<

Some of the battles in the area where Lightning obtains Odin really just pissed me off. I think it's really the first time in the game so far I've tried to actually avoid battles.

Those damn machine things have too much physical and damage resistance and/or HP. It's really fucking annoying when you don't have a commando to work up the stagger gauge on them.

Sometimes I would just put a character on Medic and another one as a damage dealing job watch TV, and come back when a commercial came on.

It's pretty absurd, so here's hoping to no more of that bullshit.

Hope get's on my nerves much too often throughout the game. His growth is obvious but he takes much too long to realize how much of an actual 'liability' he is. Even as a synergist, he's kinda pathetic albeit his eidolon, Alex is pretty awesome.

*Gameplay spoilers*

Hope becomes your best healer at the end, bar none.

According to the guide, and I agree with it when comparing the stats, your best bet party-wise is Lightning, Hope, and Fang. They're the most well rounded and diverse group, and they still maintain being the "best" at something.

Lightning is the best Ravager, Hope is the best Medic, and Fang is the best Commando. You should put CP into all of their skills though, not just what they're best at. The other three, Snow, Sahz, and Vanille, should be restricted to only playing one role, thus becoming elite in that one role. Snow is the best Sentinel, so restrict all his CP to that role. Vanille and Sazh are the best Saboteur and Synergist, respectively, so give all their CP to those two roles.

You can then decide which weapons to level up, based off of your party/skills. I chose the Lionheart/Ultima Weapon/Omega Weapon for Lightning, as it fits her best in her Ravager role. For Fang, I chose the Dragoon Lance/Dragonhorn/Kain's Lance, because it maximizes her strength and allows her to deal massive damage as a Commando.

I'm not saying there aren't other ways to form your party, and a lot of other ways work, but this is by far the best way to achieve success in your endeavors against the optional bosses.

Well, I was going to use the characters you said NOT to use. May want to think that strategy over.

Then again, looking at my stats, Lightning's are BY FAR the best. Not quite sure why though.

lighting as a comando and hope as a rev. then when got hurt bad change to hope medic and lighting still comando. and i got 5 starts in all my battle until chapter 11

Here are the stat development comparisons from my guide (keep in mind these are endgame stats):
Lightning:
Hp-7603
Strength-1560
Magic-1560

Snow:
Hp-9551
Strength-1718
Magic-1142

Sazh:
Hp-8113
Strength-1354
Magic-1245

Hope:
Hp-5439
Strength-1128
Magic-2033

Vanille:
Hp-7227
Strength-1338
Magic-1745

Fang:
Hp-7697
Strength-2036
Magic-1251

Looking at those stats, it's obvious who's best at what. Lightning is well rounded, Snow has the most Hp, Fang has the most strength, and Hope has the most magic. Sazh and Vanille are kinda balanced.

If you went strictly by stats, the obvious choices for a party would be Fang, Snow, and Hope. However, you must also consider Paradigms.

Lightning has by far the most unique and diverse use of Paradigms, and she also learns most of the best abilities for each Paradigm. Snow, with his massive Hp and good Strength, makes the perfect Sentinel. However, the rest of his Paradigms are rather lacking, thus making him more suited to be a Super Specialist, focusing only on Sentinel and nothing else (you would use him when the need arose against a particular boss/enemy that you need a Sentinel for). Hope has the best Paradigms, bar none. He can learn most anything, and he's the perfect Medic for your team, so you should have him in your party>Vanille. Speaking of Vanille, she is the second best Medic, and the only reason you should even think about using her over Hope is her Hp. Hope has terrible Hp, so even though he's a massive asset, it does the party no good if he's dead all the time. Vanille doesn't learn as many good abilities, though, so it's up to you to make that decision. Sazh is best suited to be a Synergist, and should only be used as a Super Specialist. Lightning and Fang are both better than him in every Paradigm, so that choice is obvious.

When taking everything into account, your team should consist of Lightning, Hope, or Fang, or Vanille in place of Hope if you're that worried about Hp. Otherwise, Vanille, Snow, and Sazh should be Super Specialists that, while they don't actively participate in most battles, are just as important because they are needed for some of the optional bosses.

Hope that helps you guys =)

That actually helps me out a lot. Thanks!

Makes sense too. Most of the time your only going to use commando, ravager, and medic. The specialist, saboteur, and sentinel are really only consistently used in boss battles. Even if you have to use them sometimes, that's why you have Lightning, Fang, and Hope learn the other jobs.

Wow, the battles are getting tougher now XD Im sooo happy!! Im currently on chapter 7 and Ive just got Fang in my party. She and Sazh have become my 2 favourite characters and they were the 2 I wasnt so impressed with when character info was released months ago. So far Im doing well and Im enjoying the game alot more cause I have to think in battle instead of constantly hitting A!

Hurray! I FINALLY made it to Chapter 11! I struggled a little this morning with Bahamut - getting in some hits was a tad difficult, as he kept on hitting everyone at once with that aggravating twister attack. Still...eh, its somewhat anticlimatic, really. Suddenly being given so much freedom I don't know WTF to do with it...not to mention 50% of the enemies are way out of my league...I managed to kill the Behemoth King though, so I feel a little accomplished.

Alexander gave me a little trouble as well...I beat him on my second try, and the Doom count was at a single digit. I started to panic when it hit 50 and just went on the offensive. It worked <3

Ugh, beat the 5th Cie'th mission, but with one star.

I'm not sure if I'm not strong enough, or if my tactics are just horrible. With one star, it's probably a mix of both. Still, the grindage is actually pretty fun. Close to getting my first lvl 4 role.x3
