Was the Gambit system in this game something you'd like to see again in another game? Did it make fighting TOO simple? What did you like or not like about it?

I actually loved the Gambit system. I could set up a wide variety of move sets against certain situations and have certain ones become first priority over another. It was great to have those options at hand.

This way they'd go ahead and activate their action without me having to switch between characters and tell them what to do manually while gameplay is still in action.

I liked it and found it really useful at times like you, however it was a little annoying at times when it keep doing things you don't want it to do. So essentially it's next to impossible to set up a perfect/invincible one, because of all the errors that can occur.

I think it was helpful for the game but I dont think it would be good in any other Final Fantasy's because of the battle system is different but one game that it would suit would be FFXIII because you dont get to control the other character's in any way on FFXIII.

But I think if they made the battle system like FFI FFII FFVII FFX and that then the gambits wouldnt work.

It was by no means a perfect system at all. I recall one moment in the game when I was incessantly cursing the Gambits system for being inept. Other than in that moment, I found the system to be fluid and interesting. Though people criticise FFXII for playing itself, FFXII isn't quite on the level of auto-battling that FFXIII is. With the Gambits system, you can make the game as difficult as you want it to. Unlike FFXIII it won't optimise things (i.e. immediately cast a Firaga spell if the AI knows an enemy is weak to fire) and it's your strategy and how you do things. You can just not have any Gambits at all and constantly switch around characters and attack manually. Or you can strategically use the system to great effect, setting it so a healer automatically heals you at <70% of HP for example. The Gambits system is great for strategy customisation and considering each of the bosses or stronger monsters do require different strategies to beat, trying to figure out what it is and building some Gambits to help you out is almost half the fun (for me that is).

The gambit system did make certain aspects a little too easy imo, but I'm always glad to have them during the really difficult fights, such as in Ridorana's basement. I'm level 83 and am still getting my butt kicked in there all the time even with tons of buffs :ness:

Although I am not done the game I do find that gambits are useful when I am using healing or spells etc. I mostly set up healing gambits and attack gambits. What I love about it is you can just set them up so characters will do the command you choose. Instead of going through them which is just plain annoying. I mostly use them for the difficult battles. It is important however to plan the strategy and sometimes the gambits you use can fail pretty easily.

This is true but if it WAS perfect then it would be too easy, no? I mean there are certain times where I was in a battle and the gambits I had established were doing fine and then all of a sudden I had to switch things up a bit or my first priority gambit got in the way of something more useful that I needed. It just depends...

what i love about the system is that, if used correctly, they were immensely helpful, but if used incorrectly, they meant the death of your party. there's no 'newbie-friendly' one-click button for preset gambit setups, so the player NEEDS to learn the ropes if they want to use them effectively. I love that, because it encourages you to experiment and find what works for your style of play, rather than throwing a preset mode at you and going 'here, run with it'. XIII did that, and while that's fun in its own way, I didn't become attached to it like I did XII's combat system, because of my time spent learning gambit combos and testing them.

It helps that I'm a gearhead and also a long-time fan of the Armored Core games where building your bot is almost an art and requires extensive knowledge of each part. The gambit system is very similar, so it clicked for me. And, i'm a sucker for any game that allows extensive customization.
