We are apparently due a teaser website at the end of October which means we might expect the protagonist’s name (among others) to be officially announced, or at least learn more about them. So far we only know Joshua’s name for certain.

So what do you think our primary protagonist's name could be?

Could it be another weather-based name, or do you think those have taken their course? We’ve had Cloud, Squall, Lightning, Snow, the recurring surname Highwind… What is next? Hail? Rain? Drizzle? Ser Drizzle Dulac is my first guess.

Or might it be a more grounded name just like Joshua?

Thoughts?

Imma hazard a guess that... It's Caleb, or some variant?

This sort of stems from Abrahamic religion, where Caleb and Joshua were paired as spies sent by Moses into the land of Canaan

Coupled with this, according to Wikipedia, Caleb is a Hebrew masculine given name. The Hebrew meaning offered for Caleb is "faithful, devotion, whole hearted, bold, brave". The protagonists declaration as "Joshua's shield" in the trailer hints at faith and devotion, imo!

I will probably be wrong but sure why not!

Haha, I legit just made a comment to someone the other day that his name would probably be Caleb.

Of the 12 spies Joshua and Caleb were the only two that brought back good news when Moses sent them out, and also the only two from that generation that was able to go into the promised land. They weren't brothers though, but if his name does end up being Caleb It would make sense and be kinda cool.

Alternatively (and also my guess since Adam already guessed Caleb) it would be interesting if they named him Hosea/Hoshea since that was Joshua's name before Moses called him Joshua.

Joshua is an interesting choice of names but I appreciated it since my kid is named Joshua :lew: I'll be interested if they keep with the theme or not. I can also see the protagonist being named Rain, if we're sticking with a weathery theme. He's kinda got that dull grey stormy aesthetic to him.

Wow!

I think you are both onto something there.

I was joking about Ser Drizzle Dulac as I wanted people to be aware that I was allowing flippant random guesses as well as educated ones. I’m delighted that you’ve both taken it seriously already.

The Biblical/Abrahamic route seems like a strong possibility, considering that the only named character so far is Joshua (and also other uses of Biblical character throughout the entire franchise). I would be fine with the name Caleb if that turns out to be true (fun fact: my mom nearly called me Caleb but my dad didn't like it so I became Daniel).

We don't need to connect the Biblical characters with their Final Fantasy counterparts too precisely. What matters when Square Enix adapt these stories is the themes and characteristics in a more loose sense, rather than exact. The choice of the name Joshua is probably quite deliberate. The name Jesus is believed to derive from a Hebrew variant form of Joshua, so the symbolism of the Phoenix being reborn could also be channeling Jesus and the resurrection. Loosely. It gets us thinking.

I'd be okay with Daniel as a name of our protagonist too, of course! Another Biblical character. He's someone in the service of royalty (like our protagonist) punished and thrown in with the lions (maybe like the military guys with the marks, or also possibly Ifrit as FF's Ifrit sometimes has leonine qualities in its design). Daniel is also a dream interpreter and I do wonder if FFXVI might play out in part in flashbacks or dream sequences to fill in the backstory. That's idle speculation at this point.

Outside of the Biblical side of things, I did wonder if Ash (or Ashley) might be another possibility. Ash relating to the Phoenix, obviously, but also a nod to FFXII’s Ashelia. That might be a bit too on-the-nose, however.

Asmodeus would be quite a dark name with demonic associations, and therefore quite fitting for a gritty character. I can imagine that more as an alias for the older, more bitter version of our protagonist.

As an update I have added these guesses to the first post. It really would be awesome if any of us turn out to be right.

Hmm. It's not a Nomura game so our lad here isn't guaranteed an extravagant Latin name or be named after an element or a word associated with said element. But as I've no genuinely serious name ideas of my own, let's smash those two ideas together for fun anyway.

I dub him

Blaze Finis Tragoediam

Blaze Finis Tragoediam

'Flame the Final Tragedy'.

I like it! Very fitting! That would probably beat Ignis Stupeo Scientia.

The trailer does essentially call out in a "a down with that sort of thing" way about ending the legacy of the crystals. Maybe our protagonist's story could have suffered the final tragedy he is willing to accept, or perhaps his entire life could be a tragedy going forward post-Joshua.

Here is another one... You know Bernard could sound a bit like 'Burn hard'?

Maybe our protagonist is called Bernard Krispe.

Looks like none of us will be winning anything! :wacky:

I was ready to rake it in with Bernard Krispe as well... :sad2:

Clive. I guess he's the new Cecil.
