I would like to hear your stories on when you had to face a difficult situation where you actually stood up for your values.

-Have you ever considered yourself courageous?
-What were your beliefs and values? (i.e. courage, loyalty, trustworthiness)
-Were there any consequences for standing up for those values? / What dangers did you risk facing by standing up for your principle?
-What were your fears and how did you overcome them?
-What motivated you to stick up for your principle?
-Do you still think you did the right thing?

If you would like to discuss this farther, please IM me.

[EDIT: Ok, maybe I should reword my question just to clear things up. Could you please tell me a story of a time when you chose to take the "right" action, which happens to involve courage?]

Hope that helped.

Of course, I always stick up for what I believe in. Most people do. I'm not really sure how to answer this question... partially because I'm so hung up on the phrase "morally courageous" and partially because I've never met anyone who didn't believe in what they believed. I don't even see how that's possible.

I've known quiet people who believe in being quiet and therefore do not often voice their opinion... but that's just exercising a belief that's important to them. xD This thread hurts my head.

It is only morally courageous when one has the courage to face their fears and take action when they know that there's going to be danger/embarrassment/consequences.

An example would be when one risks losing their job by disagreeing with the boss because they believe that the building should be rebuilt for withstanding the earthquake.

So you don't mean like an ethical belief then? Just some random belief? I don't see how rebuilding a industrial facility is morally significant. >.> I'm just confused.

It can also be based on ethical beliefs. Any beliefs that are moral based. Of course everyone has different values and beliefs.

Well rebuilding an industrial facility is morally significant because the person believes in the importance of safety for others and is willing to lose his job when the boss did not want to rebuild it. His value would be safety for the community. That is what is considered the right thing to do for him. Accepting this risk is what makes him morally courageous.

Our society is corrupt and we need more people who are willing to stand up. (Ever watched Ghandi?) When you see someone being made fun of, and you believe it's not right, do you stand up for that person who is being bullied? Or do you just sit back?

Corrupt in what way? I dont understand that statement. Are you saying the people are corrupt, the goverment or what?
As for the second point, dont get me wrong i hate bullying and all but a person has to learn to stand up for themselves, they cant have someone stepping in for them every time someone picks on them because well...someone aint gonna be there everytime. What do u think of that?

I'm talking about the people. (i.e.You can see how dirty some people can get when it comes down to money.) Yes, it is true that a person has to learn to stand up for themselves, that would be another moral courage, but that does not mean that YOU shouldn't help them. Maybe I should reword this, your friends are bullying this person, do you just play along because you don't want to be left out of the group or risk being made fun of yourself? Or do you say something to support that person? But that depends on your values.

What specific people are you talking about though? If its just people as a whole then i think its an unfair statement because there are many out there who do the right thing and try their best to help out someone in need.
If my mates were picking on someone of course i wouldnt join in on fear of being left out but then if that was the case i really wouldnt consider these people my friends at all if i had to copy them to fit in, i would be like a sheep.

I am talking about when you have the moral courage to face something. If you find it easy to do something then it probably isn't morally courageous.

So have YOU ever done something that was considered courageous? That's what I am trying to ask.

I will admit your questions are indirect, but I'll humor you so the thread is not a question back and forth.

Being courageous is not something that happens every day. People that show it, are not exactly proud of it mostly. It comes as a result of being backed into a corner usually..

I've had to ditch some good longtime friends for stupid decisions or f-ed up decisions they made. I don't call it courage, I regret I had to make the decisions at all to be honest. Lost some real good friends, but you have to choose eventually what is right or wrong in your head. Honestly it makes me cold inside, other people can call it a great thing I did, but a great thing doesn't make you lose those you trust to the fullest.

Their actions were wrong but hell.. good friends are a dime a dozen. Those that you keep around though, be good to that's all I can say.
