Well its always good to learn new things and the japanese language has been an interest for many anime and manga fans around the globe. not to mention it hails from one of the most popular countries ever.

So hows about posting whatever japanese you know so that we may learn a thing or two?

Im currently self learning so ill start off with some ones you may not know !

My name is (your name) - Watashi no namae wa (your name) desu

Whats your name? - Anata wa nan to ui namae desu ka?

what time is it now? - Ima nan-ji desu ka?

how have you been? - Saikin dou desu ka?

This seems more fitting in Anime & Japan, so I'll move this for ya'. ;)

The things I know about the Japanese language, while most likely the most common, have mostly been from Anime. I currently don't have any plans to learn Japanese but I do know the Japanese word for hello, thank you, yes and sorry which are of course konnichiha, arigato, hai and gomen.

I am planning to learn Japanese as a sub-module when I go to university in like 2 years time. I just LOVE this language. It's the cutest language in the world. I have mostly learnt japanese from japanese dramas and animes.

I really wish I can go to japan someday.

I've taken about four and a half semesters of Japanese classes so far during college, so I know more than a beginner, but I've recently realized that there's so much more for me to learn. I don't think I'll ever be able to master the language without spending some time fully immersed in it by actually spending some time in Japan.

With what I know so far, I can most common phrases spoken in anime, so I try to only look at the subtitles when I need them. I can also read some manga as long as there is furigana provided and I have a dictionary handy. Wish I knew more kanji.... :sad3:

Thanks for moving the topic Mitsuki ! your name rings a bell is it from an anime?

and well i know a few of you may not know alot at all
so why dont you all ask what you would like to know in japanese? some of us can look it up :)

CID!!! your absolutely spot on it is the most cutest language ever ! no matter what anime you watch theres always a moment in every episode were you think aww that was cute :)

heres some more for you all

Good Morning - Ohayou Gozaimasu
Good Evening - Konbanwa
Hello everybody - Minasan Konnichiwa
How are you? - O-genki desu ka?
Happy Birthday! - Omedetou!
Excuse me can i ask you something? - Sumimasen, Chotto otazune shimasu

I'm fluent :awesome:

Happy Birthday! - Omedetou!

That's '(o)tanjoubi omedetou', just omedetou means congratulations so you can use it in any happy/successful situation such as getting married, getting a good grade in school etc.

I put the o in brackets because it's not always necessary; it's to make things sound more polite, but if you're just talking to friends or family then simply saying tanjoubi omedetou will be fine :). For some words you have to include the o (eg. Ohayou), but many in most cases you can just ignore it to sound more casual (eg. most people just say genki instead of o-genki)

Doesnt that depend on the relation with the person? im sure you can only say words a certain way if your close to someone. and if your not you have to say it a different way.

well, yes. That's why I said 'not always necessary' and 'sound more polite'. If you're not close to someone then like you said, you have to say it in a certain way and that is by putting 'o' in front of some words (plus other little details).

But if you're talking to friends, you can variate the question 'ogenki desuka' into many ways such as 'genki?', 'genki ka?', 'genki desuka?' etc.

The 'desuka' part is similar to putting o in front of words; it's a polite way to end a question. Likewise, ending a sentence with 'desu' makes it more polite.

I learned a few words many thanks to anime :hmmm:
Lessee.. I know
wasurenai de kudasai - please don't forget
kudasai/onegai - please
maboroshi - phantom/ghost/specter... may also mean illusion
yume - dream
ganbatte kudasai - do your best or good luck
onegaishimasu - I think it's a respectful greeting to start off something. According to my kendo instructor, it means "please, let me train with you"

I can barely speak Japanese. I can count in Japanese since the numbers are similar in Chinese and I know very basic phrases, but besides that I don't know too much else. I can read some of it since a lot of the characters mean the same thing in Japanese as they do in Chinese.

Very little, but I've picked up quite a few useful phrases from just watching a few shows and familiarising myself with common phrases. The rest I've picked up are rude terms and terminology specific to that show that aren't really practical to use. I do actually think that my pronunciation isn't too bad at all. I don't think I'll ever bother learning how to read words though. Kanji frightens me sometimes, but not as much as chinese characters. :andry:

Meh I am still pretty much learning it. Though not neing taught it and stuff. Just trying to learn by myself. That my japanese coach DS game helps a bit. So I know the colors days of the week and such. I am still on the begginer level though :hmmm: Kanji is really confusing to me though. I cant really decipher japanese writing also..

I don't know any Japanese but I really want to learn and I wanted to know is the english subtitles on any Japanese film's or anime's accurate cause am trying to remember phrase's and I want to make sure am learning the right meaning to the phrase's.

I only know a few words, from reading a translation of Utada Hikaru's song "Passion" which I listen to all the time ^_^, and from hearing a few of those words in anime :hmmm: I know "haruka" can mean "distant/far away," and "aozora" means "blue sky," though I can't recall any other ones atm :hmmm: I would like to learn a lot more though, it is a very interesting language, and it would be cool to be able to speak it if I ever get to visit Japan, or at least for the purpose of watching anime in Japanese :)

Hmm i know bits n pieces, but i cant speak in conversation real well.

Kirei - pretty/beautiful
Kawaii - cute (duh)
Kirai - hate
Sou Desu ne! - that is right!
Sou Desu ka? - Is that so?
Watashi wa - I am
Anata wa - You are

... i could go on for longer but i'm soo tired..

Oyasumi! (Good night)

I have a question. Does anyone know of a good, free system to learn Japanese. I've looked at youtube, but there are so many so I'm a bit bogged down. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Mainly because I know very little Japanese, but am very interested in learning

Educated to degree level :D not to blow my own horn or anything but I'm pretty good at Japanese. I've lived there for about 3 years on and off and have worked for a few Japanese companies. Even did some localisation for Toyota! :D!
