I just beat FFIX! Here is my review.

FF9 is easily one of my favorite FFs. It had an awesome and heartrending story. The graphics beat 7 and 8 by a mile as far as them all being on the ps1. The massive chocobo sidequest and unparalled equip/ability system completed its full potential. I've mentioned this in another thread, but thought I'd make it official in this one. That being the case, I have to tell the only two things I didnt like about FF9: 1.) the slow battle sequence. The ATB just doesnt move as fast as I'd like it. And 2.) Trance takes too long to build up, and when it does, you can't choose to save it for later/ you have to blow a Flan to oblivion.

My review of final fantasy ix

this is my first review so i hope this goes ok :)

this is going to sound a bit mad but i hated final fantasy vii and viii, story line was good just hated the battle systems..

anywayz to the point soo i saw my brother playing ff9 a little while back and it looked quiet good... so when it came out on playstation network.. i brought it on my psp. and what a great buy it was

Story: one of the best storylines i seen in a game in ages... i loved it unlike other ffs which was all doom and gloom ff9 was very upbeat, the characters personallys was very jolly compared to other ff's Zidane was a very weaid lead but in a good way. unlike other games he was a humourous lovable lead that was always thinking positive, loved him. also, the love triangle you get with Zidane, Garnet and Eiko was very funny and intresting. My best secne was in coste pete (i think that was the name of the place) when zidane and garnet has to get married... afterwards when he tried to kiss her but she walks away and he thumps to the ground. mum through i went mad because i was still laughting over it at dinner that night my score is 10/10 for this

Gameplay: this can get very boring at times with the amount of battles you get. but the battles was one of the reasons why i liked 9 over 7 and 8. i found them systems to fast for me, i did not get time to think. but with 9 even with haste i could still think of what i needed to do next. one bad thing, how hard was the game... i'll put it in simple terms.. in the whole game i got 2 game overs, both was on the final boss... i found walking around and fighting normal monsters harder than the bosses in ff9. and i beat the game with level 52.. one character was lv 48... score is 9/10 due to how easy the bosses were.

Graphics: very good for a ps1 game... i was not very impressed with the graphics in ff7 and ff8. but even the normal graphics looked good in ff9 cg scenes looked even better. battles were very good as well. 9/10 again

Music: the best soundtrack i have ever heard in a ff.. all the music fitted with the location or that part of the story. i'm no alone, the garland castle.. black mages village.. the music just got better and better as it got along 10/10

overall ff9 was a fantastic game.. the only game that might beat it if ffx, it was soo good, i'm going away forthe 6 weeks holidays... ff9 is coming with me and i am playing it again :)

btw i finished it today lool all i needed to do was beat the last boss, it took me 41 hours

Well...............I just completed this within the past few hours again after like 8 years............and since I believe RPG's are about the story, this is either good or bad depending on the story.

It's good probably my third/fourth best FF game...........the only thing is the story is really good. During disc 1 and disc 2 the game you don't really know what your doing..............All you are really doing is protecting a proncess. However I suggest if your going to play this complete disc 1 and two even if you don't like it............The real enjoyment comes on disc 3, when you find out the plot of the story and about Zidane's life...........The only thing that I could pick bad was the story was told real quick............As soon as you get to the end of disc 3 you find out about Zidane.........then you have to finish the game after that. But this requires a lot of attention and once you fully understand the story, then you will enjoy it.

I liked that IX brought back the 4 party members.

This was the first time I played 9, and it did not seem like a lot of story, there was really only 1 meaningful side-quest and that was hunt and peck. Most of the optional bosses and other sides stuff don't net you value for your investment- deliver all those letters and you get 1 accessory that you got elsewhere a while before. Buy all those things at auction and enable yourself to get a legendary sword which is weaker than a sword you get quite earlier.

I disliked that only certain people can learn basic abilities, only 1 black magic caster? Dagger has no offense (other than long & underpowered summons) & lil' E has Holy but that is a long spell. ONly 1 person can steal and even then it takes forever to get the good stuff. It seemed like they makers went out of their way to make each character unique but this made them too unidimensional and pretty useless.

Also the abilities and properties of equipables were pretty weak, does long range really require 16 ability points?

Story line was ok. Playing the PS1 games after playing ps3 games makes the games seem more boring (I replayed 7, which was my all time favorite, and it felt sort of boring). Maybe because of no voice acting?

I think 8 had better graphics.

All in all I think this is about equivalent to 12 behind 6, 7, 8, 10 and before 13.

wow, just replayed this game for the first time after 9-10 years, forgot how awesome it is, random thoughts:

1. Great characters, story, and battle system.

2. A number of great places: Treno, Lindblum, Oeilvert, Ipsen's Castle, the list goes on and on, I think one of the bigger strengths of the game.

3. Loaded with great events and great dialogue. My favorite was probably the four shrines part with some great dialogue between Zidane and Quina. Strangely enough while it's my favorite part I think they could have done a little more with it.

4. Ozma still pretty much owns my soul. I did beat him a lot quicker this time though, and I have a pretty soundproof strategy for whenever I play through it next.

I kinda suck at reviews, so I'll end it here.

9.8/10, only misses a 10 because some of the side quests are a little tedious

IX... It sucked...

In my opinion this game was the worst in the series. I do not wish to convert people who like it into haters, I'm not that kind of person. I just feel they tried too hard with this one. Most of the time I was lost in the story. I had no idea what was going at plot points until I paused the game and recapped everything. Nobuo's work on ff's music made me a big fan of his. But most of the songs in this game just didn't sound good. And to top it off, it felt kind of childish. A lot of people find that this game was extremely dark and couldn't be childish. Disney movies are dark while being childish as well. IX just didn't seem to be a good game in the series. Now, I expect a lot of people to start flaming me for this, so before they do I would like to get in what my fav part was.

The play at the beginning.
Ya... Really... I liked when you had to do the button sequence to do and dodge attacks. That was fun. Also... Vivi ftw.

Woo... Glad I got that off my back.

Hell, why not?
I've basically beaten the game like well over ten times.
And quite frankly, it's the best I've played, of 7-9 and 12-13 (admittedly I didn't play 10, which is supposed to be really good). And I know, 7 is supposed to be the best, blah blah. I think people overhyped it so much (as I played it after I played 9) that it didn't quite measure up.

The best part of the game is, by far, the story and characters. And yes, they're one thing, since the plot is essentially character-driven. Anyhow, I think the difference between this game and the other ones are how much you (or maybe it's just me?) could empathize with them.
Take that short sequence of Zidane where "You're Not Alone." A scene like that is too short to be anything but cheesy, yet it touched me personally. I still think that a sad scene, because of how much I liked Zidane.
The same applies to Vivi, Dagger, Steiner, Beatrix (granted she's not a playable character), and somewhat Freya. You care about their characters. Amarant is a nice contrast to change it up, and Quina simply for the humor is invaluable.
The plot itself is fairly interesting. Parts are annoyingly underdeveloped, and it's not a case of them trying to inspire speculation (like, say, the ending of Inception did). I wish the side quests would explain like these.
Speaking of which, I found Chocobo Hot and Cold very captivating, granted I cheated and used the guidebook to help me find locations of the chocographs.

The battle system got tedious, at times, I suppose, but was still pretty nice.
Oh, and the soundtrack is just amazing.

And if I had to pick one video game, or even one disc, that is the most fun, oh boy. Disc 3...

I just beat Final Fantasy IX the other day, and it qualifies as one of the best video games in my entire collection (which is like a total library of games ranging from the Nintendo 64/Playstation to current generation systems). I beat Hades and did a little of the side quests, but put my focus on completing the game since it was my first play through. When I finished the game and saw the ending, I couldn`t help but smile. The ONLY other game to do this to me was FFVII. The magic of a solid Final Fantasy title, never seen it anywhere else.

I am a sucker for this game. Perhaps it's because I adore the medieval setting, perhaps it's the way the characters were shockingly believable, as well as their stories which were tailored together perfectly; or the outstanding battle system, fitting melodies, and unique vision on the crystal plotline. Perhaps it's all of these things. Most of all it was the way everything came together perfectly. The story had no loose ends, everything was collected into a single, easily understood adventure with twists and turns that merged effectively with the vision the storytelling held.

Characters had humour, which was plainly pursued in the series previous installments; with Zidane and Steiner at the helm of this feature. The plot had everything a good story should, suffering, hardship, love, humour, unique characters, well-delivered antagonists, and remarkable dialogue. There was a heart to the story, which some people may find too "gushy" and "fairy tale" but the fact of the matter is that it may not be as dark as say,Final Fantasy VII, but it is a masterpiece in its own light.

That being said I believe the game deserves more credit, and deserves to be placed on the mantle with it's peers and predecessors.

It is the most unique of the series next to FFVII, and that is a strong achievement. 5 stars.

The ATB just doesnt move as fast as I'd like it.

You can change it in the settings ..i think =)
and FFIX was the best FF Series ..the gameplay was perfect
the chrecters was great ..
And The " Chocobo game " [[ hot and cold ]] << i think i play it for 30 hours to get all chocobograph .. its was nice game ^.^
C Ya ..and sorry for the bad english :p

Ok I just finished my second Play through so decided to give a small review on the game.
The game is 10 years old and it's still incredible!! I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it!

Graphics:
Fantastic for their time!! I felt captivated by each and every world because of the graphics, everything looked so magical, even though the characters were pixelated I still felt they each looked unique, I loved that weapons would change when you swapped equipment and you could actually tell with the in battle graphics.
The Cutscenes were great. A lot of people don't like them because the characters are kind of midgets but I think they're beautiful, specially the ending scene! (wont give anything away ;))

Characters:
Best Characters in any game i have ever played!! Almost all of them are absolutely loveable, they all have their own little story, some more light hearted and silly than others.
I will admit that a couple of the main characters didn't really fit with the plot after a while which was a little annoying but they were still great to have around, even if it was for the comedy relief.
I really grew attached to them all and would find myself felling either really happy when something good happened or completely upset if something bad happened to them.

Sound:

Great sound track, the music suited every location. There isn't much for me to say about it other than I loved all the musical pieces in the game. The sound effects were good too :)

Gameplay:
The gameplay was great, there was so much to do, plenty of things to collect and many hidden goodies for completionists to find. I will say the battle system is a little too slow...there is too much panning around the landscapes before a battle which takes up a lot of time.
I remember in some of the timed battles I'd get really stressed because about 1 minute was wasted panning around the scenery in a battle. Then the Timer would keep going even after the battle blacked out. I did still find the battles fun though and spent ages grinding happily.

Story:
Wonderful story, a little predictable but still great, it kept me interested from start to finish. Tied most of the characters in well and finished up nicely.

Overall I give the game 10/10. I know, nothing can be perfect but to me this game was just so enjoyable I couldn't bare to rate it anything lower. I think FFIX is a rare Gem amongst the FF titles and it doesn't get as much attention as it deserves. It is easily my favourite game and playing it again 8 years after my first play through and still enjoying every moment only cements that feeling for me.

If you haven't played it...DO IT NOW :rage:

Well.. i finally finished FFIX. The storyline was awesome, no doubt about that. The Chocobo and Stellazio sidequests were fun. The things that annoyed me were the fact that you had to find/steal weapons in order to learn more skills and the ATB gauge was slow.

I had to set the gauge to "Active" just to compensate for the lame pace the ATB gauge filled.

The trances were pretty awesome, too. Too bad there wasn't an eidolon or hidden item that allowed breaking of abilities etc (Eden in FF8 or the Celestials in X.)

I still haven't bothered to try to beat Ozma yet, might do that when i'm not so lazy :hmph:

I rate this game 8/10.

Finally succumbing from curiosity and recommendations from friends; and after doing research and watching trailers/gameplay on all the FF games, I decided to play IX as my first FF game. I downloaded it a month ago from the PSN for $9.99 for my PS3.

And it was definately worth it! I might just buy the PS1 disk version off eBay or Amazon.

Anway, here's my review...

Characters: I love the combination of the cartoony style characters and their own personal themes, some being quite deep like Freya's or Vivi's. Also, the vastness of characters was really awesome. Good guys, bad guys, the weirdos, and all the inbetweens: Classic. From what I've researched, IX has the most diverse cast of all the FF games. Am I right, or is that just the main playable ones? Anyway, I think the character development was really good.

Gameplay: Different from what I'm used to obviously. I'm so used to first or third person views. It took awhile to get used to moving around, but I got the hang of it. I'm not going to hold the game at fault because of my lack of skill in this series. Anyways, I liked the movement. And about 90% of the paths were easily readable, and I knew where I could move to. The combat system was easy to learn, and I loved Trance. Equipment and Abilities took a little longer to get used to, figuring out which is best to equip. Again, my lack of skill, but they were easy to learn as well.

Storyline: Wow. I really loved the story. I haven't been a fan of FF for long, and I normally play FPS or third person shooters. So to me, this was a real change of pace, which had great appeal. And I loved the length of the game, which helped the story unfold. I do, however, think it dragged out at points. Other than that, I think it is fantastic! I don't know why I haven't become a fan of the fantasy genre a lot sooner.

Sound: The music really fits with both the environments and/or the tempo of the story points, FMVs, and cutscenes.

Also, I really felt true emotion from this game. It probably helped that it didn't have voice actors. To be able to get me to feel happy, angry, sad, laugh, etc. just by the cutscenes, text, movies, and sound/music; that is a true win in my book. Also, despite no voices, I was able to tell what the characters were feeling. I love how this game proves that stories don't need voices to be told.

Lastly, of all the games that I can recall playing in my life, this is the only one that made me cry a little. It was the FMV where Garnet was having a flashback to Madain Sari (can't remember the spelling) being destroyed and burned, while her song was being played in the background. I didn't even realize a tear came out until the scene was over. That made me love the game even more.

Score: 10/10. It's been a long time since I've played a PS1 game. So going back to playing a game that I've never played before, and seeing the epic artwork, characters, and gameplay made for the classic console; really impressed me.

FFIX was one of my first FF games and one of my most loved FF games. Great review, really enjoyed reading it. Vivi is still the best!
