So do you have any advice for a newb at it, im probably getting one at the middle of feburary or some time and id like some tips to help me along the way.

I recommend FFIX. In the general sense, it seems to have the least amount of hate and it relatively easy to understand. The sidequests merely add to the game and they aren't required in the slightest to complete it. It's also a good primer into the classes of Final Fantasy but with a much better story than the original.

After that you may want to branch out into more customizable games. In that case I suggest FFX or FFVI. Both of them have set roles for the characters inherent to their respective games but also allow for customization.

Or you can go the full customizable route and for that I suggest either FFVII or FFVIII, both of which made their characters incredibly unique based on their respective ability systems.

Personally, my favourite is VIII but if you're just starting out, again I suggest IX.

Start at the PS1 titles. It doesn't matter what games of that platform you play first. All of them are great. Then try the 16-bit era games (SNES) if you want to explore older games especially VI. If you are curious about the first 2 titles, play Origins (PS1 remake). Then play the newer to newest. You will see how this game developed from a simply beginning to a legendary title.

@Yaoi- unfortunatly I live in australia and can only find XIII-2 new and XIII pre-owned.
@Black_ eclipse- I only have a Ps3 as my ps1 and 2 died and I wasnt around for nintendos reining era. I hope for the 25 aniversery square eniq is remaking all the main games for the next generation

SE is remastering FFX for the PS3 and PSP. But we speculate that they will take very very long to release it.
Remakes for FFV and VI could also be on the way.
However, besides the ones above, there is very little hope for other FF game remakes in the near future.

You can actually download FFVII, VIII and IX via the PS store and play it in your PS3 (If I'm not wrong, FFV and VI are available through this method too). Alternatively, you can get FFVII online through the new FFVII PC port.

Do you own a smartphone? You can get FFI, II, III, IV and FFTactics from it. But these are the classical FF games. They may not appeal so much for beginners as they have outdated graphics (that is, if you care about graphics) and arguably weaker storylines (though FFIV and Tactics have good stories) with harder game difficulty.

Most FF fans also agree that FFXIII and XIII-2 are the weakest of the entire series, due to various reasons. However, since you can access these two easily, then there's little harm getting them. Just play them with an open mindset, and keep in mind that the FF games are very different. Hating FFXIII does not automatically mean that the rest of the series is bad. Some people also end up loving these games.

Good luck in your FF adventure! :)

What do you mean by losing thousands? These downloads I'm talking about is a definite one-time purchase. There's no subscription fee. And Square Enix, the FF company, is obviously legal and safe, just like every other major game company. As long as you legally purchase and download via the PSstore (for PS3) or the AppStore (for iPhone), and make sure that it's really published by Square Enix, you will not get scammed or whatever.

Don't worry too much :)

didn't you hear about the guys who hacked into Psn? they caused people to lose thousands.

Yeah I've heard about it. I thought your previous post was referring to the company itself scamming you.

Well it's really your choice though. Online shopping and download is very common nowadays. Almost everybody is doing it, such that most ignore the very unlikely risk that you will get hacked. But if you really cannot afford to risk it, then I guess I shouldn't convince you to do otherwise.

Well now that downloading isn't an option for you, and you do not have access to PS1/PS2, it looks like you can only get FFXIII and XIII-2 at the moment. But if you have a PSP or a DS, you can actually get some other FF games such as FFIII, IV, Tactics, Dissidia, Crisis Core, etc in hard copy.

If you manage to get FFXIII/XIII-2, and if you are having problems with the gameplay, you can ask for help in our FF help booth subforums :)

So do you have any advice for a newb at it, im probably getting one at the middle of feburary or some time and id like some tips to help me along the way.

My first advice is to figure out what kind of stories you like. Do you like more fantasy stuff? Like mid-evil times with knights in shiny armor? Or are you more into a little more modern/Sci-fi stories?

Also, how much have you played JRPGs? Cause a lot of them go by a turn-base system. Basically you take turns attacking your enemies and your enemies take turns attacking you.

Also what other games do you really enjoy? name some of your favorite RPG's and non-rpg games. with that info I think we could help you out more where to start.

Also one more thing, how much can you do with graphics... yes it is a shallow question, but if you can play old 16 and 32 bit graphics, then we can recommend the older games, if you want at least some 3D graphics, then we wont recommend anything before FFVII.

I wasn't aware of this :ahmed:

There are alternatives if you don't feel comfortable using PSN, the first one coming to my mind would be eBay. Assuming your PS3 can still play PSone games, you could always pick an FF title off of there for a decent price. Of course, you do risk not liking the game and being stuck with it afterwards.

Personally, I would go for PSN. Let's face it, everything online has potential risk nowadays.

As Gav said, IX could be a good starting point for you. If you start with VII and it doesn't live up to all of the hype that you have undoubtedly heard, then it could spoil the entire series for you. IX has enough content to give you a flavour of the series: Good story, music and graphics.

I would recommend picking up some other RPG's as well to ease ones self into the mechanics and story style. I first started off with games like Chrono Trigger and Earthbound.

After that I would then pick up either FF4 or 6 on the Snes via the virtual console (or emulation). Most people got interested because of 7, but imo it oversaturates ones idea of what a FF game should be like, hence getting into other games like 8 and 9 would be harder. Dont play 8 and 9 straight away, 8 plays with the series tropes differently and 9 is best enjoyed with prior knowledge of the series. Then leave 12 and 13 for last namely because 12 is very complicated and might scare new players and 13 is a base breaker.

For playing the PSone games either look them up on ebay or get them on psn. As for the hacking, that was ages ago and was related to bank accounts and not illegal downloads or compromising of user data. (unless Im mistaken)

Each game has a different setting so you have veriety (main reason I like the series). The way I personally see it each game is its own 'Final' form of fantasy.

FFIV : Medieval traditional fantasy with a plot reminecent of Shakespear. Betrayal and honor.
FFVI : Steampunk fantasy with a plot that reminds me of X-men. How history repeats itself, racial conflict and the exploitation of power and how it doesnt last.
FFVII : Cyberpunk fantasy with a plot that full advantage of everything popular in anime during the late 90's. The persistance of memory, the nature of life and lots of mystery (people forget that)
FFVIII : Modern fantasy with a plot mainly focused as a phycho-analysis of its protagonist and his maturity (and relationships) (Some have claimed the whole game past disc 1 is all in his mind).
FFIX : A bit of everything, its an composition of most of these plot ideas, a tribute in itself.
FFX : Cultural fantasy with an emphasis on religion, spirituality and ones journey to the truth.
FFXII : It's star wars set in medieval times, no kidding (leave this for much later). If you know star wars you know FFXII.
FFXIII : Legend like with an emphasis on will, phrophesy and instrumentality. This is a base breaker on all accounts, after beating it you will like some things and hate others. Leave this for last.

As for the first three, those were on NES and were ported to handhelds. They are mainly just fun rpg romps with no real semblance of plot.

Play IX.. tbh if I had started with FF7 I probs wouldnt have played any other lol IX was just nice for me. Im currently playing 8 I wouldnt recommend starting with 8 atall

If you want shiney graphics and killer story right away, start up Final Fantasy X for the PS2. It gotta me hooked initially and I didn't have to struggle looking at 2D characters hoping the game would end soon and then getting bored of the series already.

Any of the new one's will appeal to you graphics-wise. Plot enthusiasts can hope into FFVI or FFVII and go from there. No games need to be played in order, and you can take a look at what game suits you by doing a quick preview of the game, the characters, enemies, and plot in most game manuals, site previews, etc.

I'd personally liked to have started all the way back at FFI and played up through today's games, but it's too late for that now...

This is kind of late, but if you happen to still be checking up on this thread, I just wanted to ease your mind. Yes PSN got hacked into, but people didn't lose thousands of dollars from it. It was a royal pain to those whose security was compromised and until the security hole was patched Playstation users couldn't use PSN, but in the end, I don't think anybody actually lost any significant amount of money (other than Sony).

There are also other alternatives. You can purchase PSN gift cards at a local store or online, and that way you don't have to put your credit card info into PSN at all. Buy the gift card however you like, and then put the money from the card into your PSN account. Totally safe.
