Is Final Fantasy VII overrated?

No i dont think ff7 is overrated cause its a game you would replay all the time. Thats what games are for to become a classic so we can replay them remember the first time you played it.

I'm not saying Final Fantasy VII didn't make a difference, but it's highly insulting to say the succes of every other RPG is thanks to that game.

Sigh, your getting the wrong idea, the whole point is that it put RPG's into the forefront, can this be denied, let's look at what games where popular in 1996 and then compare what game genre became in demand in late 97 into early 98. Case and point, VII's popularity played a key crucial role into this.

Street Fighter II could sell SNES consoles, but that series doesn't sell consoles anymore. Games like Tekken, Soul Calibur and Super Smash Bros. do. And don't think they don't organise tournaments for those games, I've been to several SSBM tournaments (not as a player though, just to help with the organisation) and I have met players from all over te world, including Captain Jack from Japan. In fact in the Netherlands alone, there are over 5 tournaments every year and some of them attract players from all over Europe (Sweden, France, Scotland, you name it).

But I don't really care about this part of the discussion. I'm not a big fan of fighting games, so you're probably the more knowlegdable one of us.

I used to play SSBM on the competetive level...infact, I used to play SC1, SC2, and SCIII on the competetive level, I still play Tekken on the competetive. What is there to argue about this, it's not about "tournaments", it's about the impact that the game itself made. Soul Calibur or SSBM has never made the same impact as Street Fighter II did ever, to even remotely say that is wrong. SF2 made arcades become successful, SF2 drew crowds of not just diehard gamers but the general public, SF2 put Capcom as the #1 company to come for the remaining years to come. Case and Point, SF2's impact>>>>everyother fighting game's impact, nuff said.

Final Fantasy VII did have some effect on that consolewar, but there were so many factors in that war. And if anything, it was Nintendo who suffered from the ended contract with Squaresoft. That whole developer exodus really hurt the N64. Squaresoft was the company that told people a N64 version of Final Fantasy VII would cost hundreds of dollars. In the case of the Saturn, Final Fantasy VII made a difference because Squaresoft chose Sony instead of Sega after leaving Nintendo. Squaresoft could have chosen Sega, if that company did not push their system like Sony did. Squaresoft merely chose the strongest side worldwide, Sega was already digging a hole for itself at that time (the Saturn was expensive, hard to develop for, the system had lost developers to the competition, there was little marketing outside of Japan and so on). Good point, wrong console.

Actually, if you go back and read up about it, Final Fantasy VII played a crucial role into the dominance of the PSX. Why is it that the dominance changed so drastically during the fall of 97? Coincidence, no, also, it's pretty obvious when in the PSM magazines during those times contributed that PSX's turning point was the release of FFVII, this also took away players from Nintendo, as you stated, who where waiting for Square (gasp, I was one of them). I bought the PSX for FFVII, it turns out, I was not the only one. You are correct that Sega did do stupid things, however VII played a crucial turning point.

Go back, and look at the rpg's comming out from 1990-96, then look at the rpg's that came out from 1997-2000 (Outside of Japan wise). You would've noticed a vast difference, SE not contributing to Europe, I wouldn't be surprised, just look at Japan, they didn't contribute to the USA as well, just look at Virtua Fighter, that was a great game, however Sega didn't take the chance to open it's doors to the franchise to the US after VF2, and VF2 was a huge success. Why do you think VF lacks such competetion anywhere instead of outside of Japan. The whole concept of SE not opening up to Europe at the time is erelevant, and let's face it, looking at the time, Asia and US where probably the two biggest compoenents that SE could've looked at and said they can get the biggest payoff from these two places.

I wouldn't of been surprised at all, *gasp*...didn't this also happen back in 1991? Hmm, with SF2...Capcom went to the US first, only later would you see it in Europe. There was a big difference between how the gaming world was viewed back in 1997 to 2006-07, everything is more global. Final Fantasy VII pushed rpg's into the forefront back in 1997, this does not mean that "rpg's" weren't successful beforehand, however this was an indication that rpg's could, was, is a powerhouse genre, and wow...right after 1997, we are greeted with a vast array of rpg's and guess what...the rpg genre becomes the most dominant genre in the gaming industry right after 97 (Why do you think they called 98-99 the year of the RPG's)...again, coincidence, I don't think so.

VII pushed open the doors, and X is great, but without VII, there would've been no X. You can also talk about all the other companies you want, however SE is the dominant because of what they did, VII helped alot.

Obviously it's not a game everyone can replay.

I would replay 7 more, if it wasn't given all this uneeded attention.

it all depends if you like this game compared to the new ones because the First FF game i played was IX and then i went back from there 8 then 7 and then X but i liked the Story just not the graphics and wen i played 9 it was good graphics and good movies which is why i think they sould do the Re make of 7 for the PS2 or 3

The easy answer to this question is no. Their is absolutly no argument that final fantasy VII deserves all the credit it gets. it has massive replay value and the story is amazing. I don't even know how you can ask that question. I understand that not everyone gets into the game that easily but my answer is definitly no. FFVII is NOT over rated.

Erm, to be honest, yes there is an arguement - if people can put forward an opinion as to why FFVII is overrated, then, the points are perfectly vaild :P. FFVII does not define perfection, not a lot of FF's do. Massive replay value..well, I never replayed it that much. But I was just lazy.

Okay this is just a little apology to lisa or anyone else who thought my last comment was a too far. I'm not saying other people's opinions are wrong that's just what I think. sorry again :( (i'll be more sensetive next time!:))

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. You have done nor said anything to apologize for. I for one, don't feel it is overrated. I am rather enjoying all of the extra FFVII stuff that has been coming out because I crave backstory. This has been and always will be my favorite RPG that was ever made. If people feel that it's overrated, let them feel it's overrated *shrugs* Opinions are like assholes and everybody has one and they're all different.

Oh, don't apologise love. What narks me is that people who comment here don't actually explain their reasoning for why FFVII isn't overrated. You gave a reason, and I'm cool with that.

I'd like it if people now on actually explained why FFVII in their opinion, is not overrated ;)

No I don't think it is. It was very well written and had great characters. Just because a lot of people like something and you don't doesn't make it overrated.

I think X is overrated but that's just me.

yea it's overrated people don't like FF7 coz of the game, no they like it coz of the AC movie.

What?! You do realize FF7 has been out for YEARS upon YEARS before the movie was ever even thought of. The game is NOT overrated in my opinion, alot of people say that it is, because there the younger people who were born into the PS2 days and such and prefer higher graphics rather than a great storyline and characters and gameplay.
