Is it just me or is FF9 combat sloooow?

as much as I love the game, I did also find the battles a little slow, I hated when my over powered characters would be in a battle with under powered monsters because, although I could kill them easily, it would just take too long to go through each attack... so I'd always just flee (which took forever too)
And yeah, the panning out to see the field was annoying, I don't wanna see the same shots of the battle arena before each battle.

And Trances took forever!!! Ugh, I think thats my biggest issue with FFIX

^ Agreed.

I never noticed anything slow about the battling. Though something does irk me about the fighting system, I can't seem to put a finger on it. Oh well, the game is great, so I don't really care about that xD

I feel really blind/ dumb because I have never noticed this before, never ! And I've played FF IX like, nine to ten times. I have never noticed the slowness. No lies !!!
:gasp2:

Yes the battle system is really slow. In fact, FFIX's battle system is one of my least favourites. Trances come once in a blue moon too. And when trances came about, 50% it happens during a useless battle, near the end of the battle or you just don't find it useful (like Quina's cook).

Aside from that, the game is brilliant.

I did find the battles a bit slower then the other games but I never found it that bad because I never played 9 straight after another Final Fantasy game so I always found time too adjust to the speed of the battle system but I did hate fighting any weak monsters with over powered characters as they gave you very little EXP and it does take a while for the the attacks to build up so I can attack them. I did find the only problem for me with the battle system was the Trances they were useless in it cause they never activated at the right time, were slow to build up and never kept after battle

It's easy to point out flaws in a game in hindsight, but at the time I never considered combat in FF9 to be slow. Looking back and comparing it to more recent titles, there's a notable difference...but for an RPG of its time, FF9 was very smooth in my opinion. Few games have impressed me as much as it did.

I noticed this as well. It is honestly really annoying, mostly because I will close to death waiting for my people to attack and before the 20-30 waiting period (that is what if feels like sometimes) the monster will usually kill most of my people. Then I have to rush to try and revive them, usually getting killed in the process. One is not amused when that happens. :hmph:

lol what u need to do is train zidane to level 10 in the first battle area (evil forest alone) like i did to give him a little boost.. even then its slow till maybe level 20 but yeah its not a odd complant ive heard it alot.. i dont find it slow just some free time

Well, it's a little bitt slow i think, I'm pretty used 2 the ATB at FF VII & FF X. Soo it's a little slow in the start, but u get used 2 it after a little while :)

It does seem slow, especially at the beginning of the game. It's just Zidane and it takes an ETERNITY between your turns. Trying to grind in the Woods is the longest experience the game. Puts you to sleep.

well I think the first half of the game moves way too slowely, but afterwards I find as you get later in the game you dont really need to wait as long because you have abilitys and spells that fuck everyone up at once...or at least kill them with one hit. As far as boss fights go I like to savor the pleasure hehe

The battle system is slow in FF9.

It seems like it takes forever for a battle to end. And the effects and things load slower to. It's an annoying part of an otherwise good game.

And the beginning with a single character is horribly boring.

There is no ATB in FFX =.=

In comparison to FFVII and VIII, it is slower. In comparison to IV, V and VI however, it's about the same or faster.

You can always turn it up in the config menu anyway.

Sorry :P I Meant the battle system :L

Yeah, it is a bit slow. As is the loading times and such. Not that I'd clock the thing, but it seems like it'll take you over a minute to get randomly encountered, and fleeing if you want to go somewhere fast. This wouldn't be all that bad, but for some reason, sometimes the random encounter stuff gets REALLY annoying. You run in to one in every 5 seconds sometimes.

Though, I prefer the slowish battle speed when compared to say, FF8...when you get to junction speed, seems like it's your turn all the time.

What also was really annoying is how it ...uh, "stacks" the turns. Sometimes you end up inputting actions, and characters input first get pretty much two turns in while the others are stuck waiting for the enemy and the first character to act.

This was especially annoying with one of the memoria bosses, I think it was lich or tiamat. So I punch in 4 turns, and while everyone's stuck waiting for their turn, the boss casts jetfire, and I have 4 characters being pushed with Heat. It shouldn't really be THAT pre-emptive.

FFIX is the slowest of all FFs with ATBs. I'm not gonna say 'in my opinion' because, well, it's fact. xD

It tends to grind my gears, that, and the point that the characters seem to have slow reaction times when you input a command. Now moving onto my opinion, it's a massive fault of FFIX but it's the only flaw of the game.

I did find use to the slowness of it all lol. I mean just put auto regen on your team and your unstoppable. By the time your enemies battle animation/spell has come out your at full health again :P. So its not at all bad xxxx
