Is it ok to use your looks to get ahead?

Honestly, I'm not sure if I view this as being a good thing or a bad thing. I've never had good looks at my disposal to use, so I can't relate. :wacky:

I think, above all else, looks will only take you so far, then you have to do it the way it's supposed to be done. It's like if a good looking girl uses her looks to get herself out of a speeding ticket. This may work this time, and possibly a few more times after that, but at some point in time, it won't work and she'll actually have to pay for a ticket. Looks could even be used to get a job, but the bottom line is, that person will have to be able to do what's asked of the job, and looks are useless there.

And even though it's a temporary fix at best, I don't see an issue with someone using looks as a tool. As I stated, I never was a looker, so I'll never know how effective of a tool it is. But I imagine it would be tough to make it really far in life as a result.

I think it's perfectly ok.. to me, this question is all a matter of perspective.

The way I see it is people use whatever they can to 'get ahead' and most are viewed with a general judgement of either acceptable, or not acceptable. Like, people who are born with intelligence-smart people- will use their brains to get themselves ahead in life. People who have any sort of talent (artistic, physical, etc.) will use that to get ahead. People who are good looking have just enough right to use their beauty to their advantage.

The perspective part comes into play when you look at society and aged social conventionalisms that have shaped the world over the years. When talking about attractive people, today people use the word "superficial" as a judgemental insult, when in reality all it means is that the beauty to which they are referring is on the outermost layer of the object (or person's body), and somehow that's a bad thing. It's a bad thing just because it's easy to see. I don't really think this is fair. What I really think is that the whole attitude of looking down upon people who do use their physical beauty to get ahead is simply an overcompensation for a problem that was originally brought up from good looking people getting treated better in too many aspects rather than just those that fit their make. Simply because of their looks.

I don't really see a problem with using your looks to get ahead. Really the blame lies with those stupid enough to fall for this kind of shit.

Exactly my thoughts.

If you've got something to use to your advantage in order to get ahead whether it be your looks or something else, then why not use it?

And if people are in fact stupid enough to go along with it then it's no one else's fault but their own. They will wisen up one day when things don't work out and they will realise that next time when the same situation arises.

I've never had the luxury of using good looks to get anywhere so I'd freakin' well use them if I did. It's not a bad thing. It's hard these days to get jobs. =/

Dressing up for an interview will influence the opinions of your boss or boss to be, not really the same as using your assets but accentuating them. If you take the next step and use these assets than...yeah its kinda cheating your way to the top, no?

Personally if your assets happen to give you the vote then right on, but I think the people using their good looks should be at least intelligent...:gasp:

It's not a matter of whether or not it's alright; it is natural according to evolution to do that.

Just be aware that there are some people smart enough to realize that having bigger boobs or a bishie face isn't all there is in life--if that's all you had, your employer would find out pretty quickly from your personality and your other skills.

Only a hater would say that it is wrong.

[Mod Edit: Could you please add more details to this? Thank you =)]

I say do it. some people may regard that as being selfish and having unfair chances and what not but selfishness is a strength forgotten about over the years. If you decide using your abilities works best for you, then use them.

I don't see it as a problem and yet i do.

I don't see it as a problem because they have a natural advantage over other people. When you have an advantage, you use it. I don't care who you are if you have any advantage in anything, you'll use it eventually.

I also see it as a problem because there are other people, possibly more quallified then the looker, to do the same job. Just because someone looks better doesn't mean they should get the job first, but sadly this happens too often.

The problem is we all do it if we have it. I'm not the most attractive fella, but I know how to dress up nice for an interview, I know how to put the charm on for the female bosses when I want a certain raise. I've never.. NEVER had sex with a supervisor though. So I can never actually say anything.

I mean most of the time people play their looks and their personality to get ahead in the workplace on a daily basis. That's half of sales, you can sit there and look good, and make good communication face to face with an individual and if they notice you are friendly, flirtatious they are more willing to buy your product. That's just how it goes in the business world.

Now if you are a developer or something, then your brains are all that matter. So I think I'll stick with the whole business side of things and be nice to clients, and try to get ahead by looking shaven, and prepped, otherwise I may be the next fella to get let go in the work place.
