In my opinion...Sephiroth is absolutely AMAZING. He is my favorite villain of all time. His personality is so cold and heartless, yet he can be so full of emotion at the same time! Plus, his six-foot long sword is just friggin' awesome. :seph:

i think that Sephiroth is a good character and is extremely well rounded as a villian but i dont think he is the greatest character there is. there are better, and there are badder.

but it all comes down to what your opinion is.

He is a very popular villain. While it is always down to personal preference, to me he is a little bit too popular... He's brought into conversations about FF villains as like the greatest villain there ever was... I thinkk most of it comes from his image as being dressed in black, with silver hair, and a big massive sword that could scratch a chocobo's backside from half a mile away, without even realising...

Now he's not a bad villain.. I loved seeing the Nibelheim incident, and his decline from being the greatest hero in SOLDIER, and the worlds greatest hope for protection, to the twisted murderer we all know.... Just shows kids, locking yourself in a library all day can seriously harm your health :D.
And generally, although most scenes were actuall Jenova, the scenes including Sephroth were very good. He felt like a great villain.

But there is so much more out there in the world! So many great villains!
To list two...
Kefka! - FF6's insane clown. He is the most frightening villain of all, as he is so unpredictable, yet everything falls in place for him... He actually acheives most of what he sets out to do.

Ex-Death (FF5) - A evil spirit possessed tree in knights armour. :D Can manipulate the powers of the void... He only epicly fails because he struggles to control its awesome power (such power that could disfigure whole universes).

I'd say lots of FF villains are really memorable, and fantastic. Why does Sephiroth get all the credit? Why is he looked on most? Probably because there is a film with him in as well now... But possibily due to his badass look and his sword.

Not my favourite villain though...

Yes, he really is that popular. Though, I've never figured out why. Some people like him because he's "sexy" and some of them like his "awesume sword", and others think he's actually unique. I find him rather boring, with a very mechanic way of speaking. :/ I mean, he sounds like a robot prattling on about useless 'facts'. I do feel bad for him as a character, and I liked him a lot when he was sane... but as a villian, he just doesn't cut it.

Sephiroth is definitely popular and is quite likely the most popular villain in Final Fantasy. However he isn't my favorite villain, I'd rate Kuja (FFIX) and Kefka (FFVI) and possibly even Jecht (FFX) above Sephiroth.

His design is very good, he has a look which is memorable with the black suit and silver hair. But what I do like about Sephiroth is his backstory. He went from being the beloved hero to one of the greatest threats to the world.

In my opinion Sephiroth has an advantage over the other villains as far as popularity goes because he was in the most popular Final Fantasy, which means that he is featured in many other titles, sequals and spinoffs aswell. Plus there was Advent Children which gave Sephiroth exposure to new fans who didn't play FFVII.

I think that he is a pretty cool villian but i also think he isn't that very unique, all black long hair, and however awesome his sword may be or how long it may be, it still isn't that original... I already like the idea for the clown person even though i havn't played that game ><

Ohhh, I totally agree. I felt that FF7, while it did show the transgression of his character, simply presented the "factual" information of his spiral into insanity rather than getting into actual time investment into his story - which is fine because it isn't his game, it's Cloud's game. All the same, I do feel bad for the events that happen to him, but it's different with a villain like Kuja, where you can actually see firsthand his progression of evil. In that sense, while I feel bad for Sephiroth, I find it difficult to find empathy with him.

.....and oh god, I feel like such a loser saying all that about a video game character. Sheesh.

Onto more aesthetic values, I usually don't find the long-haired, beautiful bishounen type guys attractive. I prefer guys who look more guyish for lack of betterwords (eg. though Tidus/Shuyin look similar, I find Shuyin's rugged manly features more attractive than Tidus' pretty boyish ones.) That said, I think another edge Seph has going for him other than his looks is that he has one badass theme song. I mean seriously, who doesn't appreciate OWA?

Well, of course, all you guys are right. Though he is ONE of my favorites, he is not my FAVORITE. I like Chaos' concept of sending four fiends into the future to die and recreate himself, and Kefka is the kind of thing that could give children nightmares. In the new game coming out in Japan (Dissidia-Final Fantasy-), though I don't understand Japanese, his pure tone made him sound like some bipolar serial killer that could snap and tear your eyes out of their sockets in a second:wacky::ohshit:. Also, though I haven't played Final Fantasy V, but Exdeath and Neo Exdeath have very evil and villain-ish qualities (Except for Exdeath's armor color).

So, really, though i do think Sephiroth is amazing, it is true there ARE better. I wasn't saying he was the best like some people do (hmm...maybe i should change my sig...:mark:) I was just saying he was popular and I thought he was pretty cool.

Dear fucking lord that colored text :RAWR!:

As much as I like Final Fantasy VII and Sephiroth as a character, I refuse to whore over any villain. Sephiroth was a villain with intertwined backstory and motivation for his actions. Not most villains have that. Most characters are just bad for gay reasons (like his daddy didn't hug him) and their motivation is completely psychotic and nearly impossible to relate to.... but Sephiroth was different. He had substance. It's why I like him as a character and villain. He was more than just a bad guy.

Sephiroth is so awesome he is smart and strong and toke me five hundred tries in ffvii to beat he is a great villain in opinion he is just soooooooooooo AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Sephiroth is great a really good villian.

The whole back story of being the greatest hero in the world and then becoming some evil ass killing machine is quite cool.

Though, the impact that FFVII had (as a standalone, forget the sequals, prequals and spin offs) has propelled his popularity higher than it might've been if the game was average at best, but as the game was so good, it stays in peoples memories. This helps build up Sephiroth in the majority of people's minds.

I think, with alot of people, if you think about FFVII and look back at the best bits, the Nibelheim scene is always there, and I don't think there's been a scene with a villain since then that could compare to the impact that had. He just looked so badass.

Haha, I've felt that way so many times I've finally given up on trying to fight it. Though, I'm a pretty emotional person. X_x Towards real-life or not.

Totally agreed. I really don't like guys that look like chicks. X_x; I really do prefer the "manly" features. That's what makes them well... men. There are some exceptions in my eyes such as Kuja, but I think it's his awesome personality that really draws me in the most.

Sephiroth is awesome, but somehow his character always struck me as antihero, rather than main villain, it's not just his feud with Cloud, but he just seems that way to me, regardless, he's an incredible character and possibly my favorite villain in all final fantasies

Sephiroth is one word INCREDIBLE AND HE IS SO cool and is a awesome villian in FF. Probably the best!!!

Sephiroth is just right for what he does
i love the fact he is so cold but out there as well

Sephiroth is one of the most known characters world-wide but...

His actual character is kinda shallow. Yes, one can say that 'he keeps to himself' but he as a normal character is just 'bleh' and just a 'pretty boi' or a 'mama's boy'

... but that's it? Is there any more to him other than that?

Sephiroth is great! It's funny because lots of people who don't even seem to like Final Fantasy, know and like Sephiroth.

I think his background story is great, and one of my favourite parts of the game is "Cloud's Past" in Kalm Village.

Also in appearance, he looks VERY cool. I prefer many aspects of other villains, but he is definitely a well-rounded one!

I think he is only that popular cause people see how he is and assume that he is great, but in my opinion he is just another Kefka just an annoying little boss that is easy to get past.

The reason Sephiroth is so awesome is because he went insane after finding out what he really is,
the idea that his whole exsitence is an experiment make him a little more likable as far as what actions he has done (you know slaughtering villages n such...)

plus he has an awesome weapon, sweet attacks and friggin One Winged Angel!

I have to reply to this. For everything thing I love about Sephiroth, I do hate the fact that he is probably one of the easiest bosses in the FF series. If they ever do a remake, I'd love to see him actually present a challenge. When I played the game through the first time, I think I beat him in my mid-30s... and when I replayed I actually leveled up beforehand and totally annihilated him. It was quite lame.
