This is such a non-topic I wasn't sure whether it belongs in spam or up my rear.

I've an American classmate who says she has never ever seen a real life kettle until she started her course over here in the UK. She then told me that Americans don't typically use kettles, before telling me how primitive we lowly Britons are.

Her ideal way of boiling water is either in the microwave or on a stove. Needless to say, the microwave method slightly blew my mind.

American members on this forum, kindly disclose what you think about the old electric kettle as the civilised method of boiling water. And how you would personally boil water. Heck, do you even boil water? Are you one of those people who hate all forms of hot beverage and go straight for the cold water tap?

on a stove is more primitive than a kettle, surely?! I cant imagine ever boiling water in the microwave, that has never ever occurred to me hahaha. weirdos xD

I have never heard of boiling water for a coffee or whatever in a microwave or a stove... and a kettle is primitive... this shows how delusional some Americans are :ari:

the only time I ever use the microwave is when my brew has gone cold and im too lazy to make a new one, so I just zap it for 30 seconds in there. It takes far too long to boil water on the oven as well.

I am seeing an american girl currently and we drink tea quite often, she uses a kettle. Though her parents are Hungarian and Irish, which might account for her competent tea making skills. They are very strange out on the colony in general.

they are. in the civilised world.

traditionally you would put the kettle on a stove. but now we have this thing called electricity which can heat up metal elements and rapidly boil the water! :O

boiling water in a microwave. that is a great idea.

Erm I think she's a little slow in the head.

I highly doubt all Americans are opposed to using a kettle and would rather use a microwave or stove to boil their water for their coffee or whatever else they boil water for.

How is using a kettle considered primitive?

A kettle is faster and more convenient.

Steve may use the microwave to re-heat his coffee or other food items, but boiling water in a microwave is just silly.

What is primitive about heating up water in a device specifically used for heating up water o_O

A kettle puts your water from cold to boiling in less than 2 minutes. Heating it in a microwave is just the daftest thing ive heard of. That lassie needs her head checked out. Though it sounds like she was winding you up.

In a microwave? That's interesting. I'd probably get punched if I even attempted that. We over here in our home use the stove and boil the water in a pot. Then from there we do whatever we have planned for the boiled water. While we've never had a kettle ourselves, my uncle and I bought one for him this past August when we were on vacation in SC. He used it to make tea and whatnot. I guess he was fed up with the boiling water on the stove? LOL XD

I found it odd the first time I saw someone putting water in the microwave to boil it, it was in an 80's movie. What was it again that can happen if you use a completely smooth and clean glass filled with water in the microwave? Something like bubbles can't form and it shatters or something...
Yeah I agree with with people here, not having seen a kettle in the first world? She's completely daft. Does anyone remember those whistling kettles you put on a gas stove? Those were lovely.

Water in an electronic appliance. And we're the primative ones? Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewl.

One of the main reasons i'm debating not going to live in canadaa is 'cause i'd miss tea and crumps :(
