I was once a kh die hard fan up until re:coded was released. I started to analyze why KH lacked the luster the original had. And i realized its "style over substance"

I have told many KH fans my bitterness of the series and kept saying i didn't understand the story when it was not the case, it just wasn't that great or amazing.

For example in kh1 when you re about to race riku over destiny islands, you initially get that confidence right? But its that race that the game teaches you that without the proper timing and a simple screw up you could lose that race quite easily. for one that surprise loose boards make you lose a lot of time. Another is the proper timing and distant jumping

Another surprise was there were battles "meant" to be lost. Sora didn't just became a hero right when he got the keyblade. Cloud and Leon beat him easily. These just give a strong sense of realism and moves the story in amore interesting and realistic direction.

Also the worlds were much bigger and the camera angle was focused more on sora making me want to put it in first person sometimes and look around. Not only worlds were bigger but they were incredibly puzzling. Worlds like monstro and hallow bastion and wonderland kept surprising me. the gameplay was also difficult and made every aspect of it to use. Sora had a very short range with his keyblade making every hit count and he wasnt incredibly fast.

Sora was a realistic boy, he wasnt always happy, he had a fight with donald, he called riku stupid, he would genuinely get angry and even then he still was mysterious in the sense that we didnt know what he was thinking the entire time. For example he had visions of kairi and was calm about most of them.

And when you get near the end, the end of the world just surpises you again for its dark yet fitting music and feeling the world gives you.

But after that? What happens to kh after kh1?

Kh was not meant to be a 16 bit game and was put on gba for the sequel whch couldve been more amazing and closer to its roots by staying on playstation 2. Regardless it was remade on ps2 (not the same as initially releasing on it) and the game was still emotional. I dont have much complaints on gba given the circumstances it dealt.

Kh2 however lacked proper pacing and story of the worlds was barely relevant. Slowly disney was just eye candy and nothing more. The worlds barely made an impact and even worst very few worlds were breath taking. The only ones come to mind are beast's castle and twilight town. The rest i saw a lack of imagination or research.

Playing sora has become easier as he automatically homes into his enemies no matter how far you are. His mp recharges too. There was no use of tactic. Many of the bosses and enemies were able to be defeated by just hitting it with the keyblade.

It doesnt stop there, relevant aspects of the story such as organization 13 and riku, ansem the wise, namine and roxas were left a mystery up until the end. There was no build up at all leading upto them. Even chain of memories showed things sora couldnt see such as the organization discussing their plot yet still being a mystery.

And then they decide to make several kh games on several systems. Which made it diffcult for many. Playing kh and making their collection has become nearly impossible for some. But at first it looked like a step towards the right direction for BBS. But 358/2 days? Which was code for something quite stupid really. days spent by 2 a better name would be "Days of Nobody" or so.

Game couldve been great on PSP for various reasons, the main one being satisfactory graphics and voices. More scenes for thatre mode. But no we got most likely 64 bit characters with no voice acting save for what, 5 scenes or so? Thats another thing, the scenes didnt look like they match the graphics. It was going day by day and some days were skipped (which i understand couldnt have been avoided) regardless the problem was again the story, going day by day for irrelevant tasks other than creating kingdom hearts seen in kh2 but we have this completely unnecesarry character xion. Which many love but others see her as a unnecessary waste of space. I see her as such but unfortunately she is now relevant to the series overall for what little she did and only complicates the sitation with sora.

Almost all of the kh worlds did not lead upto kh2's storyline which they could have. Hercules meeting meg wouldve been a great one.

BBS was satisfactory for the most part. But the characters werent that original. Many people love aqua but honestly think ppl are too swept up by the fact that shes an original character. Nothing unique about her. Some of the lack of originality could have been avoided such as vanitas looking like sora. Not alot of problems with BBS. It seemed to try to go back to its roots but still holds the small flaws the others had. It still over complicates the situation, such as x-blade and the naming for it just not what you expect of kh and the explanation of it can be interpreted various ways. Though it gave us answers to alot of questions, i cant be mad at BBS for the way it turned out. Its satisfying but doesnt surprise me.

Coded however was completely unnecesary. I believe both coded and days shouldve been avoided altogether (well days serves as some fanservice, i just wish it was made for psp alongside bbs and avoid xion). Coded does almost exactly what chain of memories does but in data form. Not only that but uses riku as a form. All to reveal what couldve been revealed earlier. This gae couldve been avoided.

Now kh3D. Is a shining example of style over substance. Kh3D shows exactly what kingdomhearts strengths but at this point does not even try to overshadow its flaws. Sora has become more happy-go-lucky cutesy dumb act yet makes those heart speeches you think will surprise but no longer does for the over usage and lack of build up. The gameplay is great, however the story continues to go in an unnecessary and completely avoidable turn. This game makes you think what was the point of kh2. Actually it makes you question what was the point of previous games after kh1 (except bbs). Nomura advertised it as a main game yet it doesnt feel like one even though its as important as one. It seemed incredibly rushed. The ending had a nice built up but then it was killed by random surpises

KH shines in so many aspects such as gameplay, music, visuals and sometimes pacing but lacks where it matters most and that is the story. Its just not good cluddered by dual identity such as replicas, new enemies seemingly all related to aspects of the heart but not heartless. By the time you play kh3D it will become unbarably obvious. Not only that but its shallow way of trying to add new elements constantly, instead of reworking what they have in a different perspective will be shown. Nomura believes as the fans get older the story needs to mature but the story was already mature to begin with its just that it had a sense of innocence and nostalgia.

Many of you might not agree with me but i wont be surpised. This is just my opinion and some people do agree. And for the record i do undertand the story. I just think most of the complications couldve been avoided.

No, I do agree with you Razberry. I enjoyed KH1 so very much when I first played through it. And I was probably one of those hardcore fanboys who thought it was perfect in every aspect. I played a little of CoM but just couldn't get into it. And when I played through KH2, I started realizing that something was seriously wrong. And gradually, as the series started console hopping, I realized that I couldn't keep up with it. Partly because it was moving in directions I couldn't make sense of, but mostly because I couldn't afford to buy every system/handheld SE wanted to make it for.

So I'll have to take your word for the analysis you gave on the games I didn't play. But if you step back and look at the series as a whole, it is a financial success. And unfortunately for us, I think that's all that matters from a business standpoint. SE took one of their most beloved franchises and milked it for all its worth. And because of this, it has made a whole lot of us even more critical with any new games they release. Hell, we've even become more critical with the older games that we once loved.

Because of this, I'm worried that when they finally get ready to make KH3 they will fail at storytelling because SE will draw so much from the previous KH games from other consoles, that gamers who just play KH1-3 will just be lost. But you're right, it is style over substance and unfortunately, style is what brings in the money.

i just replayed kh days and the new one on the three ds. it just feels like their fanfic. none of the story adds up. oh well....for me despite my love for bbs, the series ended at khtwo.

I love Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, and even Chain of Memories I can deal with albeit it was a bit silly. All of the other spinoffs took the plot line too far and kept adding more and more ridiculous additions towards it. Like how everyone literally has a keyblade now and they brought up the 'keyblade wars' and I just... it kinda removed the magic of the first few games where only a select few were shown to wield keyblades. Because they were chosen. I dunno... the Sora clones, the clones of the Sora clones (Roxas) and so on just gets really redundant and a bit silly. I love Kingdom Hearts, but I like to pretend the spinoffs don't exist sometimes, even though I do like a lot of the new characters.

Yeah the older I get the more I realize that KH isn't all that fantastic. I still like and enjoy it though. It's good fun, however Square-Enix messing around and not putting out Kingdom Hearts 3 when they should of and instead thought that it would awesome to milk the cow instead has made the story and characters messy and now really stupid. I mean how many people are now Sora or a part of Sora ? Not to mention in KH 1 Sora used to be the Chosen One to wield the Keyblade and now almost bloody everybody has a Keyblade like they're in fashion and everybody must have one.

I did like DDD for feeling more mature and giving Riku a more mature personality and giving a more emotional and mature storyline and the villains finally realizing how hugely naive and innocent Sora is and using it to their advantage.

6 years ago I would of hugely disagreed with you and said no KH is a fun and perfect Final Fantasy and Disney mixed together adventure, but now I say that you're kinda right and it's not as good as it used to be due to Square- Enix messing around and becoming a young- adult.

KH 1 is fine and same with DDD but I cringe sometimes when playing through KH 2, COM or BBB.

Oh and 385 Days or whatever was fucking terrible.

I agree with you about Riku in DDD! I actually found DDD to be a very enjoyable game and it seemed to be a bit more challenging compared to the other games as well. The only thing I didn't like about it was dropping in the middle of a boss battle to switch to the other character. Because when you drop again you have to start the boss battle all over again. /: That bit got annoying but otherwise it was a fun game that didn't add too much ridiculousness besides towards the end when Axel - excuse me, Lea, appears. Because even HE
has a keyblade too

honestly DDD was ridiculous. You have a form of time travel. Something KH never needed. And now nomura confirms things on the fly things like nothing ever dies, nobodies don't age. We also got a dream realm/dream eaters and new organization 13. Things we really didn't need but added for the sake of stalliing kh3

Objectively DDD had to happen because of what BBS, 35i/2 days and coded established. That there is some hidden data inside sora. But still, we see xion again and roxas. Their prolonging more than they need to. Kingdom hearts could've been more simpler and it should be. It doesn't have to be this complex side stories. We only needed BBS in order to get to kh3. Its really a matter of storychoices.

These games will forever be enjoyable gameplaywise/visual wise. But if you focus on story, you noticced its lost its roots.

I've only finished the first game. Played a bit of KH2, but didn't get too far at all in the story. Not that it didn't interest me. I just get sidetrack easily with other games. I'd still like to finish KH2 before I play KH3.

I refuse to play BBS or DDD or the other few titles that came out...so I don't think I'm missing out here. However, like kryceks mentioned, my only worry is that nothing in KH3 will make any sense if they're drawing up crap from other con-holes.

Maybe try out BBS at the very least. It actually is a fascinating game and is essentially one of the more intriguing entries of the series. It being a prequel to the rest of the series definitely gives great insight as to when the chaos with Darkness (kind of) began.

yeah but the cinematic event scenes with "358/2 days" was disappointing. you would think they would convert the whole game into cutscenes, but no, the entire thing is by these journals of each relevant mission roxas went to. so re:coded is going to be a disappointment.

it will come out next year, so thats great. but this collection wont save those who dont have a 3DS for dream drop distance.

Ah haven't seen it yet so can't judge, but knowing SE they wanted to make shortcuts to save money. And knowing Square Enix they'll make a Kingdom Hearts 3. 5 With Kingdom Hearts 3, Dream Drop Distance, and something else.

The HD collection most likely won't end till 5. 5

Because $$$$

I quite enjoyed KH1 and 2 . I think I enjoyed KH2 the most though. I just found the gameplay to be a lot more streamlined. Also, the Reaction Commands and Drive Mode made battles far more interesting. The Reaction Commands made for some pretty awesome boss battles.

I've played Birth Before Sleep, and quite enjoyed it, but it didn't quite have the same impact as 1 and 2. I couldn't really get into Chain of Memories, and that 3656 Days or whatever was kinda boring. Can't say I've played Dream Drop Distance, though I do plan on buying it some point after getting a 3DS. The trailer for KH3 seems pretty neat but, as with a lot of games, I tend not to let myself get all that excited so as to avoid disappointment.

So, I wouldn't say the KH series really sucks, but it definitely doesn't have the charm it once had.

YOur concentrating on gameplay features but not on plot. The majority of KH1 was linear, but it had a consistent story. but theres something KH1 outweighs in kh2 in gameplay too, and that is difficulty. i think making it too streamline is part of the problem as it makes boss battles more easier.

sure the battles were more entertaining, they improved on gummi ship customization and various other issues. but the vast majority of the game was too easy. and a gamer should look for challenge just as much as new features.

What i'm reviewing is also story. not just gameplay.

I preffered KH1 over KH2 by a long shot. The first game is really the only one i enjoyed. 2 was ok and the others i couldnt play past 15 minutes.
Ive been playing through 1.5 FC recently and to sum up my thoughts on it.

Donald is worthless.

Donald is worthless.

I feel like I'm the only one who actually thinks Donald rocks in this game :lew:

I quite enjoy the entire story as a whole and I follow it for the most part (though it is confusing at times and there are many plotholes). I agree that KH1 was the best, I actually consider it one of the greatest games of all time TBH. KH2 WAS good but it felt lacking and the difficulty just wasn't there aside from Sephiroth, who was arguably harder still in KH1. They did something right with both CoM and BBS which has all been mentioned already. The only games that you don't really NEED to play at all are Days and Coded. Days explains why Roxas left the Organization but it's just not all that important. Now, I didn't actually play Coded, but I didn't need to either (from what I have been told). DDD may very well end up in this category too if they talk about the ending to it AT ALL in KH3. But looking back, I would only play DDD for the ending anyway. So if you think you are missing out on the game/gameplay itself, you aren't. If you wan't to know SO bad, I would just Youtube the cutscenes.

as a whole its not that good and part of it is that relevant info gets hinted or placed solely in hese games. Think of the kh days that could've been without xion.

Think of the story that doesn't need kh coded or days.

Dream drop distance really butchered sora and riku. Their personalities are way offf compared to previous series...and Axel/lea...we never get any rest from him.

I have to agree as whole, the series has a terrible plot....

Kingdom Hearts 2 was a stretch, but they could of ended Sora's story there and had a good note for Sora...

Right now there are so many stupid questions that never even came to mind in KH1 or KH2... on top of that we have 2 Ansems... 3 Xehonhorts... and god we don't even know who are good guys or bad guys anymore!

I at least understood why they made KH2, it is Disney and you have to end it on a "happily ever after" kind of ending.... but with all the prequels, sequels, midquels... it is just impossible to fully understand the story....

I almost feel like KH should of been like Super Mario RPG, 1 game and done... or done a FF or DQ thing where if they continue the games, but they are whole new stories... At least KH III will be the final one for this saga at least....

with kingdom hearts 2 though, the game gave meaning to the Nobodies. so even chain of memories served an even greater purpose by introducing nobodies, without actually introducing them formally.

And the sequels and midquels could've been fine if they actually knew what they were doing. Nomura had the idea of having 3 kh games on 3 separate platforms first, before thinking of making the plot, what the systems will be and etc.

358/2 days would've been great if xion never existed and focused on the elements already itnroduced, rather than trying to make up more elements.

Birth by sleep was good, but given hwo the series has slowly went down, i can only see it a cut above the rest, but still not beating the original.
