Right here in Asia, I'd think it's quite a major hit, but I'm not so sure about the Western side - meaning Europe and beyond. I mean, in any shopping mall I go, I'll inevitably come across stalls that are blasting Korean music. Or even some exhibitions within the mall itself. Actually, almost every stall I went into are playing Korean music.
But... What do you think of Korean music?
For me, I'm pretty neutral. I'm probably not in favor of listening to songs in which I do not even understand whatever they're singing about. Yet the tune of some Korean songs are catchy enough to get me into liking it. Take Super Junior's <Sorry, Sorry> for instance. That was one really epic hit here, especially the dance, that got many people here mimicking it.
To me, most Korean songs seem more like... Electric? I meant the genre, if I'm not wrong. It's like most of their music are geared towards the dance crowd. The sort that would be usable in discos. Not that I do not like it, but oh well, I don't like it a lot.
Then, moving on to its singers. I find it so amusing to realize that almost all the popular music that I'm hearing here right now are from some sort of group - either boy or girl. And honestly, the size of these groups always leave me wondering about the amount they can earn from appearing in events.
Take Super Junior for instance. You got to be kidding me, 13 members. When I found that out, my jaw crashed to the ground... Well, figuratively. Or even SNSD, if you want to talk girl. That's 9 members for you. Just as big.
Really, how do they earn...? But oh well, their voices are okay, and doesn't really mess up the song that much... And in fact, I think in Korean music, their music videos are one of the best parts - especially the dance for big groups like SNSD or Super Junior. Well, for one, they need no back up dancers... Obviously, and rarely.
... And, their dances are always very, emphasis on very, very well coordinated. I think it's practice, but I guess that's one really stellar characteristic of their music videos. I won't comment on the little stories in those videos, because I don't even understand what they're singing anyway.
EDIT: In fact, I think they know that is one of their stronger points, which is why they even have dance versions of their own music videos.
To move on to the singers themselves, I would think that they're probably the prettiest Asians. Handsome as well, for some, but honestly, and no offense intended, but it seems to me the male artists there are not only handsome, but pretty as well. The sort that would pass off as a girl if they wore a wig or something.
... Okay, enough of my opinions. What about you?
