Golden Sun

Hey there folks, welcome to the start of a brand new series! Golden Sun was my first ever GBA game and it will always stay in my childhood memories :).

Here's the opening. It's more for the music but keep watching until the end :s:

For those of you not in the know, Golden Sun is a very traditional JRPG, with all the turn-based random encounters we've come to expect. Towns, stunning music, a simple enough story told well. The main thing that drew me to this game back then though was the pure charm that tried to completely ooze out of the cartridge. I should probably mention that there's a kind of monster collecting aspect to the game too, but it's the characters who fight. The monster aspect is kind of...subtle-ish?

If you end up liking what you see, it's available for GBA (naturally) and on the Wii U store for a cheap enough price. In fact, the Wii U version is what I've opted for due to the screen smoothing option and general ease of access :).

I thought I'd chuck the Youtube playlist here for you too. A wee bit of choice and all that :lew::

Of course, this game wasn't made by me. All that will be mine throughout this LP will be the playing, commentary and editing :).

Thanks for watching folks! See you around for the first episode! Ohhh, I'm so excited to get going lmao :s.

~Isaac, wake up!~

Episode 1 - Isaac Wakes Up

https://youtu.be/KOoKdg6Ir2U

Hey there folks! We're finally starting! To kick things off, Golden Sun gives us such a tense part! A nice, innocent village is gonna be crushed by a boulder! Whatever can we do? :gasp:

Other than all that, we're introduced to two of our party members: Isaac and Garet. Both of them are good attackers and are good for keeping things basic in the opening battles.

Thanks for watching folks! We'll check out what Vale is normally like next time and have a bit more of a relaxing time lmao. In a bit! :)

P.S. I'm not sure about those side-borders. Do they look a little bit off? If they do, I'll be removing them and sticking with the black bars, I think. It's not like it really matters, but it's been annoying me and it's why the first episode didn't come out yesterday :s.

Episode 2 - Three Years Later...

https://youtu.be/JbCNPsPnYTs

Hey all, it's time to check out the stunning little town of Vale, 3 years after the whole boulder incident! Let's check on Isaac, Garet and Jenna...

We seem to have a new objective and that's to sneak into Sol Sanctum to see just what that pesky duo were trying to steal in there! Saturos and Menardi have a lot to answer for :/.

We're also introduced to the scholar: Kraden. This guy wants to check out the sanctum too so he's gonna hitch a ride. He...won't be fighting though. Not with his bad back.

Thanks for watching folks! See you next time for our first dungeon! :ryan:

P.S. I love these quieter bits in JRPGs. They give you the chance to have a break from the bigger, more dramatic moments of the game :).

Episode 3 - Luna Und Sol

https://youtu.be/7jqiPtgu_AM

Hey all, welcome to our first dungeon! Sol Sanctum is really basic and is just there to introduce the basic mechanics of the game. Easy battles, simple puzzles based on your Move psynergy. Y'know what though? I love the place. It brings back so many memories :).

By the way, Kraden acting like a little kid when seeing what he has been researching all this time is amazing. I love him here :D.

Thanks for watching folks! We'll have an extra long episode next time to wrap the whole Vale scenario up! Lotsa plot incoming! ;)

Episode 4 - The Wise One

https://youtu.be/joMX6teYUho

Welcome to the end of the start! Last time, we made our way through the Sol Sanctum and now we're gonna reap those rewards! This is actually the bulk of the story for the game; there aren't many points where you stand around talking for all that time after this :).

Since some trouble was made at the sanctum (by somebody else! I swear!), we now have a job to do! We need to save the world! :D

Thanks for watching folks! See you in a bit for the real start of our adventure! :)

P.S. I wanted to make this episode longer to finally be able to wrap up Vale. It feels like we've been there long enough ha! ;)

Episode 5 - Mind Of A Thief

https://youtu.be/ucjfNiuXdTI

Hey there folks, we're finally heading out into the open world! I love world maps in JRPGs, so long as they don't go too open from the start. This game finds that balance perfectly for me; it has a great world map theme to boot :D.

We're introduced to the djinn this time around around. Specifically Flint, our first Venus djinni. The whole tutorial is there. The last bit of hand-holding I think the game will give us, actually :).

With that taken care of, our next destination is Vault. This place has a nasty pest problem. I mean...thieves are pests. Yes. With the help of our new little pal though, we can read their minds and make a stop to it all!

--------------------------------------------

Bandits/Thieves Strategy:

- Kick things off with our new djinni: Flint.
- Use his summon now that he's set. Venus deals a fair bit of damage to all enemies.
- Use spells that hit all enemies. I recommend Quake, Fire and Ray. I'm sure the other spells work just fine though.

--------------------------------------------

Our first proper boss is down! :lew:

Thanks for watching folks! See you next time when we head on over to our first cave-style dungeon ;).

Episode 6 - Ivan Joins The Party!

https://youtu.be/Zd9_-QoyVDY

Hey all, we've beaten the bandits now but we lost Ivan when we left the town :'(.

...Nah, we didn't lmao. With a jupiter adept on our team, we now have a great mage! I mean, he has the typical lower HP etc, but his PP and magic are pretty great :).

Anyway! This time around we head into the Goma Cave! It's pretty short and really simple. Just make sure to grab a new djinni while you're here! Forge is pretty tough (as are most fights against the djinn) but just rip into him without using fire spells and you're good to go. If he runs away, remember to leave via the door to the left and re-enter. He'll be back ;). Him and his physical attack boost for the entire party!

Thanks for watching folks! See you next time when we check out our next town...it's the start of a whole new arc! :D

Episode 7 - Bunch Of Tree Huggers!

https://youtu.be/6mgJ30jUDAY

Hey again peoples, welcome to a whole new arc! This episode introduces us to a whole new threat that will be the main point of a fair few episodes to come! The people of Kolima village have been turned into trees, due to a grudge the head tree has :s.

So overall we check out the towns of Bilibin and Kolima, along with the Bilibin Barricade and a tiny bit of the Kolima Forest! I'm surprised it's taken this long for a forest dungeon to show up honestly lmao.

Oh! Also, we add two more djinn to our roster! We're building a fair amount now ha.

Thanks so much for watching! See you next time for the Kolima Forest! We'll have to see if we can find that head tree :s.

Episode 8 - Flooding The Forest

https://youtu.be/IFR0X6GuP40

Hey there folks! Just a short episode today covering Kolima Forest. I love this place due to the greenery and that relaxing music. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love the windpipes used throughout this game's soundtrack :griin:.

Thanks for watching folks! See you next time for the Tret dungeon himself :s.

P.S. I used to find that coat so hard to find, but the puzzle wasn't so bad this time. Though I did make some notes for that bit beforehand lol :/.

Episode 9 - King Of The Forest

https://youtu.be/EQLRPJ9AhMY

Hey folks, meet Tret! He's a grumpy git, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't be saved! He's actually a dungeon in his own right (reminds me of some other game...), so let's get climbing him and taking down the root of the problem!

-----------------------------------------

Tret Strategy:

- Put all jupiter and venus djinn into standby before the fight and cast their level 2 summons (Ramses and Atalanta) straight off the bat.
- Use your most powerful fire spells with Garet (Tret's a tree after all...or a floating head; I've never been able to fully figure out which lmao).
- Have Ivan and Isaac heal and boost defences.

----------------------------------------

I didn't quite follow that strategy in the video due to...PP issues lmao. Still, do as I say and not as I do and all that :D.

Oh! We also gain a new Jupiter djinni: Breeze! This one is really good since it boosts the party's resistance. Great for Tret actually :).

Thanks so much for watching! I'll see you next time when we head in a totally new direction in order to get some healing water for our new best pal: Tret :). That won't be sorted for a wee while lol.

Episode 10 - The Healer Of The Snowy Lands

https://youtu.be/pMUrELPRvCg

Welcome to the land of snow! I mean, in order to get there we need to take on the Bilibin Cave (which is pretty darn far from Bilibin lmao). It's a tiny dungeon with a few secrets that can mostly only be figured out later in the game, so it only takes a few minutes ha.

Imil is where it's at though! It seems that there's a new problem to take care of in this quiet, snowy town. The cold is causing major problems for the elderly (and some younger people) so we'd better sort out the Mercury Lighthouse, huh? Especially when even their professional healer can't help very much :(. Mia needs our help :s.

Thanks for watching folks! See you next time for the most involved and complicated dungeon to date :D.

P.S.
We also grab a new mars djinni called Fever this time around. Just so you know ;).

Episode 11 - The Liquid Lighthouse

https://youtu.be/HozGGNjnKig

Hey all, it's finally time for us to take on the first of four lighthouses! I say there are four...more on that later lmao.

The mercury lighthouse is my favourite dungeon so far! It feels the most involved and complex and doesn't hold your hand throughout. You also gain your 4th and final party member for the game: Mia! Who didn't see that coming ha :).

Speaking of Mia, she comes with a mercury djinni of her own (Fizz) and we obtain Sleet in the dungeon, so each of the 4 party members now has 2 djinn! Woop! :D

There's something about that big statue in the middle of the water that really appeals to me. In fact, the nostalgia is really there throughout the dungeon. I love this game so much :'(.

Thanks for watching! See you next time for the boss of the lighthouse 0_0. It's a toughy!

Episode 12 - Saturos' Super Soaking

https://youtu.be/IrkzVOZCqq4

Hey all, we're back with the pinnacle of the Mercury Lighthouse! This time around we take on the boss and see how our good friends are doing!

------------------------------------------------

Saturos Strategy:

- Set all water djinn before the boss begins
- Summon Nereid first thing and when possible throughout the fight.
- If you hadn't guessed, he's weak to water lmao.
- Don't bother with fire spells.
- Keep up defences and resestance via djinn
- Generally: Heal with Isaac and Mia while dealing damage with Garet and Ivan. This may change a bit bearing current HP in mind.

------------------------------------------------

A pretty tough fight actually! :)

Other than that, we actually get a tonne of stuff done! Healing Tret was always on the agenda so that's our number one priority. We also grab a couple of rewards for doing so :D.

Finally, we leave these lands behind us and head on over to a...bridge? More on that next time when we start a fresh new arc! Thanks for watching! ;)

Episode 13 - Trials And Tribulations

https://youtu.be/F1zcmgEjYkE

Hello there! This time around, we start the arc that's all chinesified! The Fuchin Temple is actually quite a nice place and I love the music here too :s.

Mostly though, we're taking on the trials in order to be able to proceed. The Fuchin Falls Cave is simple enough and pretty straight forward...just don't forget to pick up Zephyr for Ivan ha. There's also a pretty great weapon hanging around ;).

Thanks for watching folks! Now that we have the orb of force, we can continue onto the Mogell Forest...next time! :D

Episode 14 - Kong Of The Lost Woods

https://youtu.be/hPIVNpwPxWk

Hey there peoples! Today, we're heading into the Mogall Forest with our newly acquired force spell! Let me tell you...we'll be using that a hell of a lot here lmao. I remember not liking this place at all when I was little, due to the maze nature of it all, but now it's not so bad. It's pretty short even if you go the wrong ways.

There are plenty of good collectibles to find here too, especially the Quartz djinni! You don't want to miss a djinni that can revive a party member now do you? ;)

There is, however, a bit of a problem in our path...

-----------------------------------

Killer Ape Strategy:

- Boost your resistances and defences, as normal.
- Use Ragnarok if Isaac has learnt it. Otherwise, go down the healing route with him.
- Use fire spells since that's its major weakness. Fire summons are naturally an amazing idea :).

-----------------------------------

That's it really. A pretty straight forward strategy, though he does hit pretty hard so keep healed up.

Thanks for watching folks! With that douse drop we can have some more interesting puzzles, but not straight away. Eventually ;).

Episode 15 - Take You Down To Chinatown

https://youtu.be/B7DLChoYQI8

Hey all, we've made it to Xian; the only chinese oriented town in Golden Sun! The music here is really nice and so are the aesthetics. The only problem is that the women seem to wet themselves when they're touched. It's not the best.

Speaking of that though, it's through this urine that we can obtain Mist, a new mercury djinni! Just freeze the wazz and away you go! We also grab Corona, a mars djinni, but that's not half as interesting ;).

Finally, we check out the Alpine Crossing and do some optional stuff there. It's well worth it! We'll return here once we have a new psynergy later :).

Thanks for watching folks! See you next time for one of my favourite dungeons in the game: Altin! :)

Episode 16 - The Problem With Spit

https://youtu.be/cHE2G-kNkhc

Hey folks, we have a bit of a longer episode this time around! This is in order to check out the entirety of the town of Altin!

I really love this place, but I got a bit nervous recording it, especially with my voice saying "gone fishing" lately. Still, we wade through all the spit and phlegm in order to save the townspeople and remove the danger from the mines :).

On the way through, we find a handy mercury djinni called Spritz along with a boss...

--------------------------------------------------

Hydros Statue Strategy:

- Fire is its weakness, so stick with Garet's spells and summons.
- Increase your resistance and defence.
- That's about it really. He's just a tougher form of those living statues that we've seen wandering around the mines :).

--------------------------------------------------

That lift gem gives us psynergy that we'll use a fair bit throughout the rest of the game now. It actually opens up some good stuff back in old towns. More on that later ;).

I also touch upon what I think of mines. I'd like to talk more on that at some point since living in an old mining town has shown me what the industry is really like.

Thanks for watching folks! See you next time for the other temple of Golden Sun along with quite a bit more! :)

Episode 17 - Lamas And Lamakins

https://youtu.be/VgNl3C-uT00

Hey all, here comes the rest of the chinese areas! We have Lama Temple, which is lovely enough but it's a wee bit similar to Fuchin Temple. That's not a bad thing, as it shows consistency in the style, but I'm always very meh about it. We actually learn Reveal here though, which is an amazing bit of psynergy and will help so much in our next dungeon :D.

Before that though, we head on back to Alpine Crossing and do some optional stuff to help that guy from Xian. The one they were all talking about who looks like he has a goomba for a head.

Anyways, the Lamakin Desert. This is my least favourite dungeon in the game due to...the sand. The heat. The heat bar, specifically. Just chuck reveal up whenever you see circles of stones and you'll get some amazing stuff :). Especially the Smog jupiter djinni. Don't forget about poor, little Smog :s.

Oh yeah! The boss!

-------------------------------------------

Manticore Strategy:

- Use summons a hell of a lot. Especially Mia's water summons and spells, since he doesn't like those.
- Boost your resistance and defence.
- Try and cast bind (if your Ivan has learnt it yet) to prevent him from using spells. It'll help tonnes.

-------------------------------------------

Thanks for watching folks! See you next time for the town of Kalay! :)

Episode 18 - Checking Out Calais

https://youtu.be/w868bpImCzQ

Hey there folks! This episode is mostly about the town of Kalay. There's a fair bit of plot and stuff so I'll leave that lot to you. We do nab two new djinn too though: Vine and Scorch. Very happy about those :).

Thanks for watching! I'll see you next for some sidequests. Two episodes of sidequests total incoming! :)

Episode 19 - The Bell Tolls

https://youtu.be/G_ZjbCKcghM

The prisoners escaped! Sound the alarms! Ring the bells! Toll 'em! Toll 'em God damn it!

Hey lmao. I thought we'd have our first sidequest episode over in the town of Vault, back in the starting area of the game. Good old bridge :).

I mean, the mini-dungeon known creatively as the Vault Cave is pretty short but is a nice bit of extra stuff for those wanting more from this pretty short game. It's all for the Sap Venus djinni too which is one of Isaac's finest. It damages an enemy tonnes and heals you for some of it. So handy!

Thanks for watching folks! See you next time for the other sidequest episode in our little break :).
