I fought the Lost Number today and one thing bothers me, I know it is stated in game that Shinra specifically Hojo were creting monsters but could there be monsters like the Lost Number roaming around? Just what was Hojo and the other scientists experimenting with when they creaed creatures like the Lost Number?
 
They were probably just doing research, or rather "research" on how to make new and better soldiers in my opinion. for the story there very well could be more monsters like this, but for gameplay, no there are not any. There are creations though, and you do fight them off...

Lost number is such a side thing that there really is no need for a backstory of shinras experiments tbh :monster:
 
The Lost Number was something Hojo set up to keep people away from vincent, I think. As it has to be defeated in order to recruit him, although it wasn't in Crisis Core when I went to where Vincent was :hmmm:

Maybe its just a side boss and has no story. Could just be a failed experiment of Hojo's that just wound up in Shinra Mansion.
 
OK but why was Hojo creating monsters at all? They already have super soldiers willing to do their bidding.
 
Hojo was a fanatic at research. He had tainted Mako used in the creation of Deepground soldiers (Nero) when he already had Sephiroth. He was always looking for new experiments, the demented fool -_-
 
Hojo was quite mad. As far as scientists go, he's more like the horror-movie insane scientist archetype (something they later played on when
he transformed into a monster himself
).

While his main use for Shinra was probably developing supersoldiers, he was interested in many things too (such as the Promised Land). His experimentation on Red XIII for example might be evidence of apparantly random research.

Then again, on second thought, everything he did COULD be linked to creating stronger soldiers. The monsters he creates / experiments on could all be linked to finding to perfect gene containing abilities that will enhance humans.

His research with Jenova
created Sephiroth, and also the people from Crisis Core,
but perhaps Hojo was always searching for something more. Sephiroth had afterall
ran riot
. Perhaps the
experimentation
on Red XIII, and
breeding him with Aerith had the intention of preserving both species
, but also might have been (in his crazy mind) a way to create the perfect breed, or specimen, to use in future research. A Cetra, with the lifespan of Nanaki's race would have been quite interesting to Hojo, and he could then adapt this with the soldiers perhaps.

As for Lost Number, perhaps it was an experiment to see if it was possible greatly increase the physical strength and magical strength of a creature by storing them in two seperate halves, and that he might have intended to use this on soldiers too, in some freakish way.


I'm not entirely convinced though. I'll need to play through the game again as I'm not sure to the extent he is interested in soldiers or not. He might just be mad and bent on knowledge and crazy experients in general, and excited about any interesting results, while perhaps it was Shinra that gave him the goal of creating soldiers, of which many of the weird creations may be failed experiments / test subjects, or experiments that went well but the specimen had served its purpose and were simply left or locked away.

I can imagine that all sorts of freaky monsters were created at different points in Hojo's career.
