This is truly shocking. I heard about it on the news the other evening and just couldnt believe someone did this:

Telegraph.co.uk said:
Police confirmed a man, believed to be 21, had been arrested near Frankfurt in Germany following the death of student Mr Pyke, who was killed in his flat in Nottingham.

Shortly after the killing a fellow gaming fan, David Heiss, 21, from Frankfurt, posted a message on the Facebook site of Joanna Witton, Mr Pyke's girlfriend, apologising "for having caused so much trouble lately".
Police refused to confirm or deny that Heiss was the arrested man, although detectives admitted internet links were a line of inquiry they were actively following.

Mr Pyke, 20, and Miss Witton ran a website called Wars Central, devoted to fans of computer strategy game Advance Wars.

It included a forum where game players could discuss tips and strategies for the chess-like game, in which armies of cartoon characters battle against each other. Heiss was a contributor to the forum under the name "Eagle the Lightning".

Police are working on one theory that another fan of the game may have fallen out with Matthew in cyberspace and then taken extreme revenge in real life.

After the stabbing, one anonymous poster suggested other forum members may have known who was behind the killing.
"We may know a lot of what was going on prior to the killing, but I, for one, am not going to say any more," he said.

Then on Tuesday Heiss posted his message on Miss Witton's Facebook, the only time he had ever contacted her through the site.
Heiss, who lists his main activities and interests on Facebook as the internet and video gaming, said: "I will pray for you - you must be suffering unbelievable pain.
"I'm sorry for having caused so much trouble lately. I hope you won't lose all your hope. We will be there for you."
Heiss lists his occupation as "apprentice" and describes himself as a "jack of all trades/dogsbody".

His Facebook site contains only one picture, and he has only 15 listed "friends" - including Miss Witton - in Germany, the UK, USA and France.
Police believe he may have got to know Mr Pyke, who used the name "Shade" on the internet, and Miss Witton, through their Wars Central site.

Now it hasnt been 100% confirmed it was this man, there may be another member who caused a dispute on the forum as well. But still, its sad that someone can take anothers life over what is said over the Net.

Yes people do say silly and downright stupid things over what people have said to them via the Internet. I myself suffered bouts of depression due to members on a terrible forum who found it amusing to humilate me in front of other members over anything. And there was no one I could turn to. I refused to go on my PC sometimes as i just felt sick knowing someone was out there taking joy in my pain.

But we are straying away from the subject at hand. This is a case of a person clearly unstable, but also can become emotional unstable and upset over an online matter. It seems the Internet has gotten out of control with cyber bullying and debates. Plus it makes other forums look bad.

Thoughts?

Thats messed up!!! how could you kill someone about some stupid thing that happened over a game? Man the world is so messed up its ridiculous. That is truly a terrible thing.

You know, I'm currently going through forum hell with VengefulRonin creating duplicate accounts on here and on DeviantArt to torment me, flame me, tell me I look like a zombie, tell me my art sucks and humiliate me and trying to pass himself off as somebody else. But this...this has just gone way over the line. o_o I can't believe people are really this bad...

That better not happen on here...o_O
Of course, I don't live anywhere near any of you, so I feel safe. :D

Nah it'll never happen on here, we love each other too much. And jeez I remember reading about this in the newspaper, it's bloody terrible...

OMG!!! thats mental...and also the last time i purposely agrivate people here at FFF

I really shouldn't find it amusing...but, Im a bad bad person..... some people take things WAY to far, my frienda already think Im a weirdo for being on forums and stuff, this will just further that cause....

It's abit much when people take the internets into real life, this guy (if he dun it) is CLEARLY off his rocker, but no doubt, someone somewhere will say it's all down to the internets and games as usual  Because like, we are not all individual.

I have gotten slightly more worked up then I should of about some comments that have been made about me online, but I think when it comes down to it, you can't get carried away. I mean, for christ sake, its someone that you don't really even know, and most probably someone that lacks the bollocks to make smart arse comments about someone in reality, so they decide to do it online where the person at the recieving end of the comment can't hurt them.

But with the issue at hand. I was gobsmacked when I heard this on the news on Monday morning I think it was. It is sad that someone had actually decided to take human live merely because of something that has happened on cyberspace. This has actually got me slightly worried now about the online community, are people actually getting nutty enough to go anywhere just to kill someone because of something they have done that can't even really matter. I tell you, this has gotten me more worried about the human race now :ffs:

Thats shocking to hear Rinoa, i hope something gets done quick as thats ridic how hes hounded you like that. as if people have nothing better to do then make peoples lifes more difficult. I see the web as a way of escaping the real world and communicating with people who share your interests, but people bullying online is just retarded. I sense these people are the ones who suffer in real life and use a screen as protection to bully others whom there is a good chance they will never encounter. They are cowards.

Ive been told by my family and mates Im werid for being online and chatting with complete strangers, but ive made some great friends on here and elsewhere. I dont see the harm in it seriously. but indeed, the world is messed up. Both on and offline.

What's even better (sarcasm) is he pretended to be my friend for a very very long time and had me fooled. Then one day I wake up to this letter from him telling me how much he hates me, he insulted my family, my artwork, my modeling, my 4 year old SON. What's worse is he created multiple accounts on DeviantArt to attack my artwork and kept spamming me with e-mails, so badly to the point that I had to switch them. It wouldn't stop. Just last night, he signed up with another account on here and trolled me even more. It's just ridiculous. The net is supposed to be a time you can use to get away from the pressures of real life, but no of course not. You're always going to find the psycho bastard bullies who jack off to trolling you. It's ridiculous, but to take it so far as to going after somebody and killing them...wow.

That's just stupid. If he can get worked up that much about something on the internet then there is something seriously wrong with him. Everyone get's mad at someone on the internet but that is taking it way to far.

I guess this goes to show that nowhere is safe anymore =/ Wherever you may be, you'll only end up getting slagged off, or worst, killed.

Quite a shame really. The internet was originally classed as a haven where you can go and talk about your interests, and now even the real world has slowly turned it around, slowly starting with smart arse comments, cyber bullyings, viruses which damaged property, and now murder. Bleeding life ain't it. -_-

Where exactly is the evidence that he was killed by someone the guy knew online? As far as I can tell is that that's the conclusion the police are jumping to, and are totally ignoring any other possibilities.

Thats all Ive been able to find out regarding the matter. His girlfriend believes it to be this individual as do some members from the forum due to recent issues on there.

Either way, it all boils down to some psycho going off the deep end and hurting another person. Whether or not they knew each other on some random forum means little.

Disturbing stuff. Gotta be careful when you're dealing with people you know little or nothing about.

That's kind of stupid, most of the people nowadays are very stupid. Just to think that a man could kill another human being that had dreams of being something, his friends, family, etc.

Cya*

This doesn't surprise me at at all. Clearly internets are serious business.
I can't see it having anything to do with the forum guy. Unless he' whilst fuming with rage calmly bought a plane ticket, waited the the 5 hours-ish it would take. All the while being very angry, then upon arriving bought a knife, knowing that he is going to be a suspect and very easy to remember, given the fact he is an angry German. And after all that, still being very angry, he went and stabbed someone he didn't know.
It's the logical conclusion rly.

Wow, that's just too much, but as some people have said, it doesn't surprise me. People do crazy things and to get worked up over something in the internet and getting revenge for it do happen, yeah. But, as for this case, it IS hard to determine the situation since as they've even stated, it is but a theory. Sure it's possible that the guy was responsible for it, but then again who really knows? More investigation is clearly in order but they should be careful not to accuse the wrong person. It sounds a little far-fetched to me, to be honest...but again, it is possible.

I'm not very surprised by this either. There are a lot of people out there who have serious problems, and with the internet the way it is today, it's so easy to find someone. With forums, IM, blogs, and even communities like facebook and myspace, people take everything said online personal. Some people just cant distinguish between internet, and real life. Who can blame them too since some of us can agree that we spend a lot of time online, and after a while, you just get attached to it.

Part of the problem may be that an indissoluble part of the internet is anonymity. The internet as a social tool is relatively new– regardless of how old the tangible technology may seem. So new that sufficient etiquette hasn’t developed. Technology is advancing at a much faster pace than humans are and as much as I marvel at the possibilities presented by illimitable, world-wide communication, it worries me too. We are far too ahead of ourselves and as a result have found ourselves immersed in a counter-culture with no resources to understand or thrive in it. We are at still at a place where people can baulk at incidents like this and assume that the victim was some socially stunted basement-dweller that "took the internetz too srsly."

Then we end up with teenagers killing themselves over MySpace harassment. Disputes coming offline and into homes. Relationships and families destroyed over adulatory or addiction. Stalkers. Liars. The social-stigma of the internet has to change. There has to be recognition that these are real, physical consequences involving real people.

I think that there is a serious lack of consciousness, especially on forums and communal sites like LiveJournal etc that there are actual people behind the screen names and avatars. It’s easy to bully someone when you don’t have to look them in the face. This disgusting lack of common-sense humanitarianism needs to be seriously addressed – if it is not, I expect to see a great deal more of this.
