Materia

I like to Mix :

My spellcaster - Normally Aeris - or tifa after disk one

Restore with all, then equip a load of magic materia in the other slots ^_^

My Warrior - Cloud

Restore with all *again* 4Xcut and the standard magic materia with 3 HP Plus in there too,

Summoner - Barret

As many summons as possible, enemy skill materia and about 2 MP plus materia and 3 HP plus materia

always seemed to work out for me ^_^
 
My favorite combination of materia is...Final Attack and Phoenix. Basically before you die, it will allow you to perform an attack, and then with Phoenix combined, you will be revived and fully cured, and the enemy also suffers fire damage. I found it to be very useful!
 
at LEAST 2 mastered HP and MP plus on each character, as well as Magic Plus on my spellcaster, Luck Plus on who ever has deathblow.
