Can someone out there recommend to me a good modern era RPG, as in the setting is modern times, or a good believable futuristic RPG that isn't post apopticalyptical (spelling?)/contain zombies?

Ones that play like FF series or Star Ocean series- as in many party members, lots of story, some sidequests, and not a shooter.

In my mind FF8 had a modern setting to it- blogs, web based tutorials, lots of similiar techonologies. Star Oceans are sort of the only real RPGs that have futuristic settings I am reffering too that I have played (I am going to be playing Rogue Galaxy shortly).

I do like the fantasy/middle age RPGs but there is just such an over abundence of them that it bores me sometimes, and I like to look at what others sort of predict our future could look like.

I don't know all that much about video games, so if some people could give me sweet RPG games that have modern/futuristic settings. [I have a back-compatible ps3 so any PS game would work].

Maybe what I am asking for is too specific or not clear, but I figure I would ask anyway, thanks to all those who suggest games or even take the time to think of one for me.

Rogue Galaxy.

Friend this what you are after, it has all the things you mentioned.
Great Story, interesting characters, excellent weapons and thew fighting system is in realtime.

And no Zombies in sight.......well there are undead enemies sure but not Zombies.

PS2 game BTW. Phantasy star universe is another of this sub genre.
Marvel Ultimate alliance is set in modern times, and/but features alot of Marvel Heroes
depends whether you like marvel I suppose?

Galaxy,

After I finish uncharted 2 (probably next week) Rogue Galaxy is on tap. And from what I have read it was a solid game and now that you confirmed it is what I am after- I am def. looking forward to it.

If you have an XBox, you should check out Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I and II. Both great games.

If you have a DS, I'd recommend Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor and The World Ends With You in terms of modern, urban setting, although I don't think they meet the quota for things like side-quests :hmmm:

Devil Survivor is a SRPG, and TWEWY is a interactive stylus-based action RPG that involves two characters.

EDIT: I meant it's two characters in gameplay-there are a decent amount of actual characters in the plot :lew:

Will def. check the games I can (only have a ps3). Its ok not to meet all the criteria, I just figured it would be more descriptive if I included as much as I could.

Thanks guys.

If you're into jRPGs, you could try out the Megaman BattleNetwork/StarForce titles, those have a fun combat system that will keep you on your toes (well, BN does, I haven't actually tried the SF titles yet)... Those are on GBA/DS, though.

Mass Effect. That's the one. Not a jRPG, and certainly doesn't have normal RPG gameplay. But, if you're looking for a game where you actually play a role, then Mass Effect is a solid one. You actually get to make decisions that have an effect, and the way your character acts is decided on you. Less visual novel with leveling up and more single player table-top.

Can anyone think of a good "modern" one, I guess ff13vs is going to be?

Modern... only for Xbox. Indigo Prophecy provided a very interesting approach to role playing games (bordering on being an interactive movie of incredible length).

Resonance of Fate, perhaps. It looks amazing, and I'm constantly meaning to pick it up and try it, but I can only handle one intense jrpg at a time (currently FF12). Combat looks to be incredibly fun, at least.

Modern times tend to be a rare topic for jrpgames to approach, going for intense escapism and departure from the normal world.

Ohh, not terribly familiar with the series, but you could look into Persona. Some of the games are modern-ish, from what I hear.

Sorry, that post was a little all over the place/stream of conscious...

I'm hoping that the next console FF is less futuristic and more classical, like IX for instance.
Anyways, I've always been a big fan of the Star Ocean series as far as futuristic ones go, as well as Knights of the Old Republic and Sudeki (even though Sudeki is hard as shit. (Japanese-hard)lol

Elder Scrolls and Castlevania are nice medieval types. They're also addicting as a mo fo.

So I finished Rogue Galaxy and it was solid, not great. Not sure how much time I am gonna to put into the post-game content. I guess I would say that Star Ocean 3 was better, and Star Ocean 4 was about the same.

From what I have read I guess A Phantasy Star or Starforce is what I will be looking for next.

one 2D mmorpg that's pretty futuristic

i can tell you the name of one futuristic game. It's 2D, but still pretty fun. it's called epicduel. you can choose from the classes of: bounty hunter, tech mage, mercenary, and later if u want u can change to: blood mage, cyber hunter, or tactional mercenary. i personally enjoy the game.

You should check out Lost Odyssey for the Xbox 360. It has a nice blend of futuristic and fantasy elements. Reminds me of FF8.

ff13-2 was sort of this, but it was just ok. Glad someone brought this thread back- I am always looking for futuristic console rpgs (ps3 or psp) for me, but others have offered good suggestions for other systems.
