So, I just finished my third playthrough of this game, and I paid about half-attention to the Monster Arena this time. I didn't even bother to capture 10 (or even 5) of every monster, and I even left some areas unfinished! :gasp:

However, some of these monsters can drop some pretty nifty things. The Species Creations, in particular, usually drop various Spheres which you can fill your empty nodes with (I normally farmed Juggernaut for Strength Spheres), and some of the enemies can aid in getting items for impressive customizations as well.

Anyway, what did you think of the Monster Arena as a sidequest? Did you make extensive use of it? If you fought the creations, what strategies did you use?

TELL ME :gasp:

I actually never really paid much attention to the Monster area except for when it was needed, I found it a little too boring after some time. Though when I was doing this sidequest I would use my hard hitters for the more stronger enemies, and of course use Haste to get my party really moving, and when coming up with a Chimera or something that would use an elemental magic attack I would use Null spells that would usually help.

Though I never knew they actually dropped items that were worth while, guess I never paid much attention to that either, I always thought they just dropped the normal items that every other monster would drop. So I guess I'll just have to give it another go and see what I can get from hearding in some monsters, who knows maybe I'll try some other areas besides the Calm Lands.

I haven't actually fought any of the creations though I can honestly say that I have really wanted to, but I don't think I ever caught enough monsters for a creation to be made. So I think i'll definitely go back and catch somemore and see what can be produced and possibly mess around with different strategies and see what happens.

:)

I didn't really pend time on this side-quest, in one of my older playthrough i had worked on this [not very extensively] but i did KO all the monsters that the monster arena could thro at me [some in one hit with anima's Overdrive dealing 500000 damage, and occasionally 2] but it is a good sidequest to collect all types of items and spheres

I've always used it. It's a fantastic way to max stats and Nemesis is a good warm up for Penance (if you have the int./pal versions).

Although the capturing part of it is a little tedious (particularly when the spawning chances of some enemies are ridiculously low...), it is very rewarding, and a lot of the equipment that enemies drops sell for high amounts of gil, so you can make millions in profit, and the money you spend to actually fight them won't make a dent in your earnings.

I loved this sidequest, I farmed my 99 dark matters from there and its also good just for getting other various sphere thingies too, although farming fortune/luck spheres which ever was a butt h ead, stupid giant flan thing -_-

Either way I enjoyed it, I even liked capturing the monsters, it helped me through the Blitzball matches for wakkas shitting stuff :ness:

Oh my. I want to play FFX again and this time lay more energy into the Monster Arena. Just took all monsters on Mt Gagazet and that´s about it... I never cared much for it then.

I didn't really pay much attention to the arena when i was in the calm plains, i was busy trying to get stuff on meh sphere grid to kill Seymour Flux (single hardest version of Seymour)

I really enjoyed the monster arena. It was a good way of working to get good items, especially Yunas ultimate weapon. Il admit though some monsters were a pain to find as they were very rare but its worth it once you find them. Its one of them sidequests that i find myself HAVING to do, else i just dont feel right completing the game. I really wanna play FFX again, silly ps3 ><

I felt the monster arena wasn't enough challenge on it's own. Actually, the optional bosses in general weren't. Out of all the 80-odd optional bosses in the game, the only one I had trouble with was Dark Bahamut (even Nemesis and Penance, I had no trouble).

However, in No Sphere Grid challenge (especially if you don't like relying on super powered aeons), it's a different story... there's quite a few good challenges in there. While some are simple, and some are too luck reliant (Shinryu, and if you don't use aeons Vorban), some of them are great fun in NSGNS challenge (Jumbo Flan comes to mind here).

Ah yes, some of the monsters were truly miserable to hunt, especially when you were trying to find 10 of them. Hunting Marlboros on the Calm Lands comes to mind...especially since they always Ambush with Bad Breath. :gasp:

I normally just farmed Juggernaut for Strength Spheres and Pteryx (I think :gasp:) for Agility Spheres. My tack when it came to fighting the greater denizens of the arena (the Original Creations) was having very high Agility and Strength, and using Quick Hit. I beat Nemesis this way, using the aeons as meat shields. :gasp:

Nope, that's Great Malboro (and only in Omega Ruins, their ambush rate is just like any other fiend when Inside Sin or in the monster arena, although in those places they do still use Bad Breath first turn if they ambush you).

Fenrir. Pteryx drops Evasion Spheres.

That's what I did for Dark Yojimbo. :D (but you need MP and Luck there too)

... That thing... was... ARGH. My completionist part of me wanted me to finish it completely... Never have managed to. Maybe this summer! :gonk:

But right now... just thinking of it makes me want to cry :P The monster arena was my own personal piece of hell... simply because I can't beat the monsters I did unlock >.> And that stupid Jumbo Flan! You need a high Magic stat to beat him without Aeons, and you can't get one... because he drops the Magic spheres.:mark:

D: The Monster Arena ftfmfwtf makes me 'gasm. It was like being hooked on Lays. Once I started I just felt like I had to keep collecting monsters. It was only when my characters got to levels 40 and on or when their stats were high that I found this enjoyable, though. Like god-moding through the game, killing everything in the way... <___< systematically.

It's actually easy to collect monsters: keep a journal or "accounting record keeper" (paper) and something to write with, go to areas where you fought the monsters you're searching for, fight them and tally up to 10. You have to keep track of "breeding grounds" for each monster to make hunting easier for you; each monster has an area that they most frequently appear in. Just go there.

This took me about ~45 hours play time to finish. Now I'm in the Arena with the same journal keeping track of what monsters drop or what items you can steal from them (both with normal steal and with the Master Thief weapon ability). 1/6 of the way done. School is catching up to me though, even though it's nearing the end of the year, and the task remains undone.

You sure about that? Watch this video:

Jumbo Flan being defeated in a No Sphere Grid game - which of course means VERY low magic - without the use of a single aeon. :)

Well, I am still working on the Monster Arena myself. At the moment I am trying to collect 10 monsters within each area. It's quite a bitch to do, actually. I have yet to beat some of his created creatures.

Yep, capturing is really shit.
The worst offenders are Simurgh, Tonberry and pretty much all the Omega Ruins fiends except Zaurus (especially Varuna and Master Tonberry).

But the creations aren't so hard to beat. Get decent MP, Strength and Agility, and you can beat them all except Th'uban. You just need on top of that enough HP and/or Defence to survive his counterattack to beat him.

If you really want to though, you can beat almost all of them without the sphere grid. You do need powerful aeons (if you're not using the Sphere Grid) for two of them though (Neslug and Ultima Buster), and a lot of luck for some others (Vorban, Shinryu, Nemesis).

I didn't mind the capturing, I actually enjoyed it, (Im sure Im on my own on that) it helped get me through all those Blitzball games, it SUCKED that you had to have X amount of fights between tournaments/leagues.

The only thing that pecked my head was catching tonberries and those stupid birds on Djose high road. Rarer than rocking horse shit those swines

I think teh Monster Arena is like, my favourite Sidequest in the whole FF series

Monster catching kept me entertained for HOURS. And I clearly need to get out more ¬.¬

Um. Who told you you have to fight any amount of battles?

A new league opens as soon as you finish the old one. A new tournament opens after accessing the main Blitzball menu 5 times, whether this is by finishing a Blitzball game or by exiting and reentering the menu. (If you don't start the tournament, 5 more enterings of the menu result in it closing.)

Oh. That isn't between tournaments/leagues, that's just in total. You could fight 450 before you even play a Blitzball game, and you'll be able to get Aurochs Reels. (That is, of course, once you get Attack Reels and Status Reels.)
