So in the newest release of Dragon ball Z, they felt the need to make another edit. Apparently it's offensive for Mr. Popo to be black, so they felt that they needed to make him blue. Though why change him now? The show has been on the air for over ten years. And what was offensive about him being black?

Also, what is with this blue? It's not even a good blue. He looks neon and does not fit in with the back ground at all.

Wow. That's just ridiculous. I mean, who the hell cares what color the character is? Look at Piccolo, he's green. Green suits him fine. Mr. Popo looked awesome in black. Him being blue makes him look like a genie now. I'm amazed that people would complain about him being black in the first place.

Wow. As long as Dragonball/Z has been airing in the US, you would think if they had a problem with his skin, they would have edited it awhile ago. Some of the english version of Dragonball Kai edits I can understand but some of them make no sense at all. I agree with Mitsuki as well about Mr. Popo looking more like a genie now as well.

I've been watching DBZ Kai since it came on, and thought something was up with Mr. Popo... but I couldn't remember that he used to be black for some reason. xD

wasnt he fatter and taller too, or is kami just that tall of a bastard

I don't know why, but it makes me remember of the incident where a guy was written up because he apparently used the term "black hole" as a racial slur, according to a flaming retard.

But I guess there is just really only one thing to say; there are a lot of stupid motherfuckers out there, I'm just glad most people I know aren't one of them. :wacky:

Didn't the nicktoons version of the anime also have a black Mr. Popo as well, at least that what I remember....

Though why now? That's just stupid beyond all comprehension...

That's a really bad edit too, since you can tell Popo is supposed to be Black under the Blue glow. It's stupid that they felt the need to change him though, honestly, some people will complain about the stupidest of things :ffs:

Still, we don't get Dragonball Z Kai over here, so I'll just stick to my DBZ DVDS. Although, I like how they've update the rest of the animation in general, that's pretty good.

Well I can see how Mr. Popo can be regarded as racist… A black monster with big lips serving and doing the gardening for a supreme guardian of the Earth. I don’t get why they would change it now after all of these years, and after everyone now knows Mr. Popo as being black.

If I recall correctly they’ve edited Mr. Popo once before and made his lips thinner, so to avoid the racist complaints. Poor Mr. Popo is never let alone, and the funny thing is that all of these edits are 20 years too late. Mr. Popo is already a known character, and people will continue to view him as black. If any damage could be done, then it has already been done. Changing him to blue now does not change the appearance of the character in the minds of people who have been a fan of the series for a long time.

I can see why racist complaints could be made regarding Mr. Popo, but I wouldn’t necessarily see the basing of Mr. Popo on black slavery as to suggest that slavery should be a done thing, or that blacks are inferior. Mr. Popo is put forward in a good light in the Dragonball series, and is personally one of my favourite characters. They give him important roles as well as just the plantation working / gardening duties he is often seen doing. Mr. Popo is also a great source for knowledge, so he is not meant to be a downtrodden and uneducated black slave.

In fact, I think that Mr. Popo’s design is probably a combination of black people and Arabic jinn. He is seen flying on a magical carpet, and his clothes make him look like a genie. To me, Mr. Popo is just based on some stereotypes of the ‘Other’ from the point of view of Japan, which many people do when designing monsters / aliens / strange races from the viewpoints of their own cultures. It’s easier to base aliens or strange races of supernatural beings on the mythologies and appearance of Earth’s cultures, and to specifically base the designs on cultures which are perceived as being exotic to the home audience (in this case being Japan).

I think that this blue is a horrible blue. It almost hurts my eyes… If they were going to re-colour him then they should at least have made it look as if he still has skin and a structure to him, and is not a walking UV light.

L is right. Mr. Popo did used to be taller and fatter. He looks like a midget now. He was never huge, but I guess they feel that they can’t run the risk of him being labelled as a big black man anymore. His voice over also sounds less 'black' than it did before, though voice overs change anyway.

If this is the Kai version of Mr. Popo then none of this affects me, as I’d rather watch the unedited DBZ anyway. I actually like the filler and such, and as far as I know Kai cuts a lot of the filler out. With this considered, the appearances of Mr. Popo in DBZ Kai must be quite minimal too.

Huh? Was this recent? Because when I was watching Kai on nicktoon's he was black...Maybe that's misleading info? Either way I think the edits and remakes suck. It's like they're giving the newer generation a taste of what used to be a BUFFET -__- I feel like this remake is just sloppy seconds :/

My little cousin didn't know much about DBZ so when i showed him the older series of DBZ he agreed with me. I think it's great they're making the show new with kids again....but to be honest it wasn't too much of a kid's show to begin with. More like pg-13 rated. If there truly is a blue Popo floating about out there TV really has gone to shit :(

The show have been there fer almost 30 years, and they edit it because some time,we see Sangoku in a position, and it take like 5 minutes to change position cuz they wanted it to make it longer ,so the show can last enough to make an episode! They edited those part so it can be faster episode with the same amount of time !So more things can show in one episode! -THats why they edited it!-

Just a little note (maybe you've misunderstood the thread title), but the topic is about the issue of Mr. Popo's color.

:ninja:

Oh sorry, well its abit weird that he is blue now,as the other color gave some flavor to the series! Why they did that ,i don't know ,but i think they wanted it to be less offensive, since mr POPO is some kind of slave! anyway !

this is hilarious
I always thought of him as a black slave but that was for my own personal luls
that blue is pretty shitty though
I understand that he's always had a 2D-looking shade of skin
but there are so many blues to choose from
I guess it could be worse

I still don't know whether to laugh or be pissed that they did that. It's like people trying to change Santa Claus's appearance and make him skinny instead of fat. There's nothing jolly about anorexic Santa. They should've just left Popo alone.

*sigh* This video makes me feel better about the whole thing.

The blue Mr.Popo is Toonzais ideia right? I think it's much more offensive for the fans that they change his color to blue.

Lol but that's not all check this out:

Apparently according to Toonzai Yamcha survived the explosion of the saibaman, as you can hear him making sounds after the explosion. Most importantly they completely changed the true lines and even had Vegeta pay his respects to Yamcha lol, when in reality Vegeta trashes Yamcha.

Also apparently you can't say "Spirit Bomb!" you have to say "Spirit Blast" and so on...

They edited so many things and made the worst translation possible that it would have been better that they never bought Kai to being with if it's so politicaly incorrect to air in the first place:S

That's why i watch the japanese anime with english subbed episodes, it's much more fun.

Huh? Was this recent? Because when I was watching Kai on nicktoon's he was black...Maybe that's misleading info?

I've watched most of the episodes so far, but somehow, I've watched very few of the latest ones, but I did see the one where Mr. Popo takes Bulma to see Kami's ship. I'm pretty sure Mr. Popo was black in that episode.

Eh, if they did change him to blue, then whatever. I think it's stupid, but it doesn't bother me. I have all of the episodes on DVD (the orange box sets), so I can watch them anytime I want the way I remember them! :) Not to mention with all the fillers (although, there are a few I don't like too much).
