Square Enix is working on a brand new and original Final Fantasy game for DS that will be released in Japan this autumn.

Japanese magazine Weekly Jump got the jump on the announcement, according to a translation by IGN - spoiling a Square Enix teaser site countdown that now ticks on in vain.

Dubbed Four Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden (translated from Hikari no Yon Senshi: Final Fantasy Gaiden), the game follows a 14-year old boy whose birthday is ruined when the King summons him to rescue his daughter from a witch. His adventure plays out in typical party-of-four, plenty-of-menus fashion - although one where mana (or magic) points have been replaced by a Charge command.

Customisation will play a more important role, as equipment changes are reflected by the appearance of your character - a mechanic JRPGs usually forego. FFXII and FF Tactics character designer Akihiro Yoshida will work on the game.

There's no word on release plans for Europe.

IGN surprised me when I first heard about this. At least I won't have to bother with the stupid countdown site (why oh why do SE love doing that??!!).

I didn't expect an old-school Final Fantasy game like this at all. It sounds like a pre-Final Fantasy VI game where it's all traditional and medieval. In fact I didn't even expect a Final Fantasy at all. Gaiden means side story- so I can see this becoming a new sub-franchise like Crystal Chronicles hopefully.

I like the fact that this will be an original title- but I'm still hoping for a Final Fantasy VI (and possibly V) remake for the DS. Although I wonder how an old school RPG will fare in a world where we have Mass Effect and Fallout 3.

What kind of bastard king sends a 14-year-old boy to go kill witches on his birthday? :ness:

I don't know what to think of the game so far, since nothing much other than the basic idea has been revealed. If it's being made to be like and old-style FF game, there there shouldn't be much to it.

Hmmm, seems intriguing. Although the details are minimal so we'll just have to wait and see what happens. I like the idea of customisation affecting character appearance and Akihiro Yoshida has original/cool character designs i.e. FF12, FF Tactics and Vagrant Story in particular.
But 14 years old? Are we gonna have toddler heroes by the time FF 16 comes out?

Oh wow this early and I was following that god damn countdown site. So we will be playing as 4 warriors of light or something? So I can imagine that Final Fantasy Gaiden will be a whole series of games? Hmmmm this is cool. Def gone a get it.

I like the sound of this one, I hope it's a good game. Although, I'm intrigued about omitting MP points for this charge command thing.

I agree with 14 being a little young for a main hero though, but I'd like to wait and see more details before making any judgments :gasp:

Aha! I was thinking it would be FF related in some way. I was going more along the lines of the Crystal Chronicles 'cause of the art at first, but whatever.

An original FF game should be interesting, eh? ;D

I'm actually interested about the age thing. It'll hopefully leave it opened to be based around the theme of friendship than the more "adult" theme where two particular people falling in love and etc.

I'm a sucker for the "bonds of friendships" stories :3

With this and Dragon Quest IX on the horizon, I think that I'm actually looking more forward to Square's handheld titles than anything coming out on the big consoles.

Lol, poor countdown :P

Well, it was excepted that it'll be a DS game. I wonder how will they call it...
Hope it will be a good game, since I am getting a DS soon :)

As long they will release in Europe, I would be 100% happy, but if they do not, they will surely upset the fans. Europe's the continent with the most people, which means more business. So there's every advantage of realeasing it. Waiting for what 'Charge' means and the story, I think the game itself is going to be brilliant.

I think that by making the protagonist a 14 yr old boy, they're targeting a much younger market. Maybe trying to crack on to the animal crossing/pokémon type buyers? (or at least their parents ^_^)

I think it is intruiging though, and hope it does come to Europe, it'll probably be about 1-2years late so I'm not anticipating anything yet!!

WOW, this is cool, we need stay more informations, but it realy means new things...

And 14 yrs, dont are to yung... If you see other Games the Times run in game :)
he can pass to more fast :)

14 is not that bad. It's only a couple of years younger than most other recent Final Fantasy protagonists and as old as Sora in the first Kingdom Hearts. It's just another teenage hero. Nothing new there.

Hmm . . . 14 year-old hero? <_< that's quite young tbh =/

Well that bit about FFXII and FFtactics character didn't really get me interested in this game, oh well, we'll see when they release a trailer or something >_>

I hope the game is cool and not class based:) Its for the ds? please, no touch screen

abuse:mad. maybe you can create parties with other people to help you play the

game. that would be :awesome:

i hope its for the ps2 and the ds too

Same- I wish there made a few more games for the PS2. I can't bear to see that amazing console die away seeing as though I was with it since its launch. But this will probably be a DS exclusive game. SE has little reason to put it on PS2 when it will sell much better on the DS, seeing as though the DS isn't considered "dead" yet.

Agreed. What a way to celebrate your birthday.

"Hey, how was your birthday?"
"Oh you know, the usu... Just killed some witches, nearly died in the process. Nothing out of the ordinary."

XD and I'm looking forward to this game! This countdown timer is annoying that, I'd like to know more ==;

SE STOP KILLING US WITH YOUR DELAYED GAMES AND COUNTDOWN TIMERS! it makes us writhe in pain. (Anybody notice the Guilty Gear ref I made there? 83)

Anywho, If it's like the old final fantasy I surely will be looking forward to this. I think I'll begin to like SE a bit more if this suffices for my FF needs. Considering most people are complaining about FF13 and 12 being too advanced and not FF at all, it would seem like SE is catering to both old school players and the newer ones that are just joining in the series. I can't wait to hear more!

Old school Final Fantasy, eh? Glad to see they're bringing a game out like that. I, personally, adored XII, but going back to the basics will be a nice change in pace.

But man, fourteen is kinda young. Maybe they're just appealing to a younger audience, too, but Iunno... xD;; I'm just so used to adult leads that I was kind of surprised.

Ah, but damn. There's too many games I want. Before I know it, I'm going to be BROKE.ಠ___ಠ
