The first time i played FFX and completed it i never actually realised that no one in the game actually calls him Tidus it's nearly always " the boy " or " Him " there should have been a scene where he said " I have got a name you know " I remember realising on my second playthrough in Kilika that no one had ever said his name

Pretty funny to think Yuna said she loves him yet she has never said his name :lew:

Yeah it's so you can rename him if you want (although I never do it). I don't think I noticed it the first time I played it. Personally I'm kinda glad they didn't mention it because after playing dissidia I realized his name sounds like shit: Tie-dus > Tee-dus :monster:

Abstracting a bit are'nt we? not you Sash Mike Mizziani up there lol

I get your point but all the instances where this occurred were perfectly legitimate..........it got kind of annoying but it still made sense,Id prefer S-S/S-E would just not give you the option of changing Tidus's name.

There first foray into voiced FF games and they decided to keep a throw back to a time when you could change every characters name.........personalisation of the main Protagonist is not so important as to orchestrate a few silly scripted scenes lol.

I think they should have just scrapped the name change for Tidus so the other characters could Address him as Tidus and not " the boy " it makes him sound inferior but i guess it worked well in a sense since no one knew anything about him,

And i agree about how you say his name.. Tie-dus sounds a lot better

I wasn't bothered that they never referred to him by name if it meant you got to name him. Although I was never all that crazy about naming him after finding out how annoying he was, but I digress.

They should start doing like Mass Effect does. Allow you to give the character whatever first name you want to give him/her but also give him/her a last name which other characters can refer him/her to during cutscenes.

finding out how annoying he was, but I digress.

Whiny little man says what?

Good point about Mass effect.........but FF is not usually military based and referring to people by their last name is normally done in organizations where first name familiarity is not the norm..........army navy airforce marines.

So saying that the intense relationships that forged in FF games go deeper than military protocol may allow............+ they would have to come up with last name for all those guys and thats a pain.

Seriously try coming up with a cool sounding Last name: Exasimuth.........is what I came up with lol

I found it kinda odd how they always referred to Tidus as a pronoun and never by his name. Everyone else is called by their name. Plus I found it odd he was the only playable main character that you could rename. Typically in older Final Fantasy games you could rename the all main playable characters if you wanted but they didn't have voice acting so it didn't matter. They obviously didn't pull the same trick on XII and let all the main playable characters get called by their name, which makes X an interesting case.

As for the pronunciation of Tidus, I've heard people say that in other games it was pronounced "Tee-dus" which is weird because I always thought "Tie-dus." However I do remember Selphie pronounces it correctly in Kingdom Hearts II and she calls him "Tie-dus."

i used to name him something derogatory LOL i could picture wakka saying some of those horrid names :) but this time i kept it Tidus but i always called him Tee-dus myself

I think they should use some kind of algorism or voice program,I don't know, that let the characters call you by the name you wrote in the blank space. Do remember seeing something like that on some voice programs.

Or,well, just call him the name it's supposed to be and that's just fine, lol.

I thought it was weird that the other characters never called him by his name. Even in X-2, Rikku always referred to him as "You-Know-Who". It never bothered me though.

As for how his name is pronouced, I always called him "Tee-dus". "Tie-dus" sounds like some kind of nasty disease, IMO.

I think it's becuase the game was fully voice acted.
Unlike XII which only had voice dialouge in cutscenes.
If it was like XII they could of called him any name you choose in the parts with no voice acting, and like maybe some unvoiced npc's could of called him by name as well.

It is because you can chose a name, if you didn't have a choice like some other games then it would be set Tidus, which I kind of like, because he has a persona and flaws and stuff a name is only natural. If it was an RPG where you make the character from scratch then naming him yourself would be ok with me.

As for algorisms, it would never work, my name per say wouldn't sound right pronounced in english as would many others we may chose.

I never really had a problem with no one saying his name during the gameplay. I DID however notice it while I was playing about the 2nd or 3rd time through. I do kind of wish they'd just take out the optional name change and keep the original name. It makes things seem a little more personal to that character. All in all, it didn't bother me but it was a little funny how the developers got around not mentioning his name at all.

It's pronounced Tee-dus, just so you know. I saw an interview of the English voice actors for Tidus and Yuna. They pronounced it Tee-dus... so yeah. xP

Anyway. I never really cared, considering the fact that you can rename him... but (I believe) renaming the main character never stopped Alice from saying Yuri's name once in Shadow Hearts... Hrm...

Nah not really. It did not bother me that nobody said his name. I really think it is because you can rename him xD. I know in Dissidia Final Fantasy they say his name :hmmm: Yup Tee-dus is the official pronounciation. It is like that in Dissidia FF also. Well it would have been nice if You didnt get to rename him in FFX but I guess they just took a different approach with that. You can rename the Aeons also. That said, it does not bother me as it is just a name. However it would be weird one day if Tidus and Yuna got married and she would be like "boy" instead of his real name :wacky:

haha good point.
i have played the game a couple times through and never thought about that.
i think the others are right tho;
it would be weird if you renamed him something else- while all the NPCs still called him Tidus.

I never changed the names of the lead character, and it never really bothered me that they didn't say his name. I think I would have preferred it but oh well.

KH rocked my world when they pronounced it Tee-dus... it will always be Tie-dus in my mind... ALWAYS!
