Saw the trailer for this on IMDB, and the only way I can describe it is "Fight Cthulhu with Giant Robots." Seriously.

One of the robots can even do a rocket punch thing like Big-O.

I'm going to need to see reviews on it... Visually it looks good, but nowadays that only goes so far, because film has seen just about everything there is to see. So it's left up to the story to blow us away...

i saw the trailer when it was released online, and i'm still very much unsold on it. i think the concept of it is fantastic, and i would think that someone like guillermo del toro would do a top notch job, despite the fact that he isn't exactly a proven action director. i'll give it more time and decide what i think of it nearer the time, but for now it just looks like a high-budget, run-of-the-mill action blockbuster.

although i'm still unsure as to whether it will even be considered a blockbuster come summer time :hmmm:

Wow, that Looked pretty sick honestly. I just hope the story is good too, or all those awesome graphics will have been for nothing. Welp, hope it does good.

I was gonna post this topic myself, but you beat me to it. :monster:

Seriously though, I have literally been waiting my whole life to see such a film hit the big screens over here. This is coming from a fan of all the classic Godzilla vs.*insert giant monster here* films, and my favourite cartoons were the likes of Battle of The Planets and Transformers, and my favourite run of comics was Marvel's Shogun Warriors (Based off the Japanese giant robot toyline which featured characters like Gaiking!) and heck, I even liked the original Power Ranger series simply because it had giant robots battling giant monsters. I tend to try and stay reserved when it comes to films like this, but the child in my is way too overexcited.

I mean, judging from the trailer, it looks truly awesome. Both monsters and robots look truly terrifying, and I can imagine myself quite literally shitting my pants seeing all this in the cinema. I mean, everything about this screams 1970's sci-fi and Kaiju. My two favourite things on this planet. Even the suits are reminiscent of those worn in Shogun Warriors, and Battle of The Planets.

No matter how many times I watch this trailer, it's always gonna send shivers down my spine. My girlfriend is gonna get well and truly sick of hearing this over the next few months. And, it's released two weeks after my son turns three. I'm very much contemplating taking him to see it, as he is absolutely obsessed with robots... particularly destructive and explosive ones.

And you know... Even if this film does turn out to be just another high-budget-explosive-action movie... It will be worth it just to see these monsters and robots laying the smackdown on each other. And the rocket punch... The rocket punch! AHHHHH!

Seriously, one of the robots just had to have that. It just wouldn't have been right if none of them could do that!

Yeah, needless to say I am super excited for this film, and if it turns out bad, I plan on having Guillermo Del Toro's head mounted above my fireplace. Along with Michael Bay's because he ruined Transformers. >_> I don't think I can handle another bullet in my childhood.

a sort of new trailer is online now. it has a lot of old footage from the last one, but some new stuff as well:

also a quote from guillermo del toro about the glados voice:

The trailer also still features that recognizable GLaDOS voice, courtesy of voice actor Ellen McLain, though del Toro recently told the Toronto Sun that McLain’s voice won’t be processed in quite the same way in the final mix. (“The filter we’re using is slightly less GLaDOS,” he said. “Slightly. The one in the trailer I wanted to be full-on GLaDOS.”)

it still looks no better than an okay film to me

Aah I was talking about this with Paddy few days ago lol.
I saw the trailer months ago with only.robots. I think it was a snippet. Looked cool but I was like come on transformers or something, flavour of gundam nah ..power rangers yeah a bit.

Few weeks ago a colleague said something about big ass robots vs dinosaurs..I was like wtf thts retarded. Went on imdb and checked the trailer and I was like wow that looks amazing.tbh.

Del.Toro.surely.cant disappoint right? Im looking forward to this movie.

quite amusingly, this is expected to open second to grown ups 2 in a fortnight's time. that's behind an adam sandler film. it would seem interest in it is very low. :wacky:

Actually, I think it's more because Grown Ups was such a big hit in the US. To say interest in this film is very low is silly, it won't be an Iron Man 3-sized hit but should still do pretty well. Though to me it looks like Evangelion without any of the stuff that makes Evangelion so interesting/infuriating.

I don't know whether or not to be ashamed of how excited I am about seeing this. :hmmm: It really appeals to the part of me that will probably never grow up. The part of me that just likes seeing massive robots and monsters smacking the shit out of each other, and other similar sorts of destructive entertainment. :hmmm:

Weapon?!?

Seeing this is a Final Fantasy Forum, Does this movie not make you think of Weapon from FF7 or Giant of Babil from FF1/4??

Why does it take two people to operate a giant machine if they do the exact same thing? it seems stupid to make this whole sharing memories so they can operate it better when they can just operate it alone. The world is too sci fi for me to actually absorb it. Idk, its whatever.......maybe im confusing this movie with another.

The makers thought the idea of the giant robots being piloted by a single person seemed too 'superhuman'. There's actually a featurette explaining that very question.

I guess it's reasonable enough, though opting for two pilots doesn't really make it seem all that less 'superhuman'. :lew: In the old comics and cartoons these robots were based off, there would typically be a crew of about four or five. Maybe they thought that might be a bit too much for film.

AMURICA IS GREAT:

MECH ACTIONÉ:

1 month old:
Just saw that last one today and its a pretty good trailer.

But they half-assed it. They serve the same purpose, so whether 2 or 1, it doesnt matter. Theh both j ave to share the same action to control 1 robot. Its ridiculous! If one controlled the lower half and the other controlled the upper half, then maybe. But this movie doesnt attract me at all, just like that robot wrestling movie....just rippin off of comics and never adding a hook for those who dont read them

it was the bland, cgi-heavy action flick that i thought it was going to be. the story is all set up through a voice over at the beginning, and what follows unfolded predictably and very formulaicly. they set up scientific and logical rules to the way the jeagers work, and why they require multiple pilots, but then shit all over those rules when the convenience stikes them. i was also very disappointed with ron perlman in it, he didn't play a very good mob boss.

it did have some pretty decent action scenes though, even if they were overly reliable on cgi.

I just saw this movie with some friends and I can say that it mixes the best of Western and Eastern mecha perfectly. The battles are wonderfully done and there is no needless sexual tension thrown into the plot for no reason. Characterization was well done, if not the best, but thoroughly enjoyable. Every time it seems like they can't top themselves in the movie -- they do. TVTropers will be able to predict a good deal of things fairly accurately, but it is no less enjoyable for that. It is very fast paced with no slow spots, and it breaks formula in several discrete ways for a much more entertaining movie overall. It isn't overly cerebral (go watch Transformers if that's what you crave) but the trade-off is quick and simple action in a high-stakes game and the comedic relief is wonderfully written. When it comes to giant mecha vs. giant monsters, this movie is by far the best one I've ever seen yet and is highly recommended for some good fun.
