Okay, I get the Piggyback guides for my Final Fantasys, but what Ive noticed is the 9 one is quite poor.

Example:

When you first start as Zidane, it tells you to walk to the center of the room to light the candle. You do so. Then the next sentence says "Before you do that, you may want to collect the Gil and potion in the corners of the roomas you wont get them again!" Something roughly along those lines! How ridic is that? I now tend to read on quite a bit before I perform anaction with this guide.

Also it doesnt tell you everything. Sometimes it tells you to go online and log into the Final Fantasy Online site and discover what you need to know! What if you dont have access to the Internet?! Youre meant to be a full walkthrough! It clearly isnt!

So how do you feel with the PiggyBack walkthroughs? Do you use them or would you rather discover stuff for yourself. Or have you used them and noticed more examples like this in their other Final Fantasy guides?

I tend to use them after I complete a game once. I had one for FF7 that I got free with a magazine and still swear that it better than any of the official walk throughs.

I know what you mean. I got the Brady Games strategy guide. It doesn't tell you any of the secrets! You have to go to PlayOnline fo rall the answers. Unfortunately, now the website doesn't have any info for FF9. What is a newbie to do?

Piggyback are officially the best ones out there, unofficially, they're a little crap, but I'd recommend them for VIII, X and X-2. Seeing as how VIII and X are really quite big.
They should have done one for VII, it would have been kick ass, but to be honest I think I could do a better job, seeing as how I know the game completely inside out. :p

Personally I agree with comment about the VIII, X and X-2 guides from Piggyback being rather well done, they were rammed full with information. I'd also say that their Kingdom Hearts and XII ones are pretty good ( although I do have a couple of gripes with the XII one... ). The IX was rather flimsy in comparison, but it did cover pretty much everything it needed to, even if the PlayOnline thing is a bit of a jip.

Overall I'd say Piggyback tend to do pretty good jobs with their guides, I'd say that they're better than either Brady or Prima.

I've never heard of Piggyback guides. Is this a UK thing I'm guessing.

The only guides I've ever brought were Bradlygames guides. The only one I recommend is VIII. Well the VII guide wasn't too bad. FF Anthology guide was terrible. The author barely cover any side quests are not even mention where to get each blue magic spell in FFV. I rather just use Gamefaq.com.

I have the guides for VIII, IX, X-2, Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. They're all really good, but I have to agree with that comment about the IX guide. Not only that, the guide doesn't just tell you what to do, but it actually seems to give away a large portion of the plot and so, if you do read on, you'll end up knowing what's coming, story-wise.

The guides for X and X-2 are good. I have IXs too, but I haven't used it a lot. I used Bradlygames guides for VII and VIII, though. I think the quality varies depending on the game. Neither company is better than the other overall.

Hmm, I've never heard of Piggyback Guides either. It's always been the Bradygames guides that I've used so far...and to be quite honest, while they are good, I find that they do not thoroughly cover all the secrets...especially in IX, I've noticed.

I still buy the guides for my FF games, but I prefer the guides online that are written by others. Of course, it takes me awhile to actually stick to one online guide as there's many out there.

IX was a waste of time, I ended up figuring it all out for myself in the end, I didn't have access to the internet at the time the game first came out! It frustrated me alot........I still buy the piggyback guides tho, found 'em rather usefu so far! lI'm still not great with online guides, all that writing sends me cross eyed and I like a nice book with pretty pictures to look at ....lol. I alway beat the game first time round without the guide anyways so I don't ruin the plot, so reading too much doesn't really affect me. I think there are always gunna be discrepancies, and VII was sketchy in places like where you got the final attack materia from. Overall tho (IX aside) Iv aways found my bradygames/piggyback guides ok....well, mostly!! lol

ive only got the XII guide at the moment... its pretty good, its got all the side quests and hunts and everything... but the writing is tiny

Oh I was really upset with the FFIX walkthrough.
I usually buy walkthroughs just for the sake of having the game & guide as a set. I don't usually use them until I've already played the game through at least once, but I really enjoy having them so that I can play a 100% thorough game.
I love game guides that have secrets, pictures, and goodies.
FFIX's game guide was a real let-down. I'm ashamed that I even bought it. =[

If it's my first time through, I'll try not to use a guide, but I usually give in, especially with FFXII. Anyway, I agree with most in this thread, the guide for IX was pretty much useless. I helped a lot with general issues, but lacking in more important information with its go to "PlayOnline" for more information.

As for do I buy the guides? Tes I do, In fact, I collect them. So far I have VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2 and XII's. I'm still looking for the older guides, eventually I'll find them on Ebay.....or Amazon..........Maybe.

Bradygames guide does have the secrets. Just at the back of the book. Though I'm sure there could have been more info somewhere, and writing not so tiny in some places.

I don't bother with walkthroughs anymore until I finish a playthrough on my own first. Then I revert to GameFAQ's for guides, as they can offer more information than the 'Offical' guides you find in the shops. I found the one for FF VII by Brady quite rubbish to be honest.

It depends which one you got, Brady did two guides for VII ( both by the same writer ); one for the pc version and another for the PS1 version. The PS1 version was in colour but quite frankly the guide sucked, the layout in particular was horrible. The later pc version was a vast improvement and contained some information which was missing from the PS1 guide ( *cough*enemyskilllist*cough* ) and even had the odd little extra bit of content such as the artwork for each of the characters' weapons in the game.

A lot of you probably won't have heard of Piggyback because it seems as though Brady Games still publish the American version guides, I've seen quite a few of them in an import shop near me. Piggyback took over the European guides from VIII onwards. Personally I'm happier with Piggyback, even if the IX guide was a bit of a blip....

I've got the guides for 8, 9, 10, 10-2 and 12. I found them all very useful to use, and since I'm one of those people who love to do everything, the guides helped and help me a lot. Plus I like the structure of the guides, the art and most of all...the smell! New books always smell so good!

I have the Piggyback guides for Kingdom Hearts II and the Limited Edition FFXII one, both were rather pointless buys but they are just handy if you need them...and the artwork inside them looks rather nice.
I have the FFIII guide as well by Future-Press, albeit, I used that a fair few times. :monster:

I have guides for Origins (1&2) VII, VII, IX, X, X-2, XII and Kingdom Hearts. Only the VII is from Brady games the rest is from Piggyback. The Brady one is by far the worst. I ended up adding alot of stuff to the book by actually writing it in. I never write in my books.
The Piggyback guids don't always have something either, but I'll usually just print the missing stuff and add it like that (like the locations of all moogles in IX). If I did that with the Brady one, I'd have to print way too much. Also I only buy a guide for games I've already finished. So I won't spoil things for myself. So far I'm pretty satisfied with them.
Although if you really want everything out of the game, you should buy the Ultima guides. Unfortunatly those only come in Japanese.

Yeh, the FFVII guide from bradygames is very flawed. Some of the map taggings are messed up and in some locations it says that the enemys in a certain locationd on't drop anything when infact they because it says it in the beastiary. It's also shit for Enemy Skills, on the odd occasion it tells you that certain enemys do enemy skills but really you need to scan through the entire bestiary at the back of the book to find all of the enemey skills.
