Pluto? A planet?

Rydia, you rock! I never really knew any of this stuff. I hate science. I hate it with a passion.

But...this is something I learned when I was in Grade 2. =)

My Very Excellent Mother Just Sat Under New Pine. (Anyone familiar with this?)

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.

"And that is the reason why, kids...that Pluto is part of the planet." =)

LOL I learned it as My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas

So I guess now it's My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us .... Nachos?

There was also talk about Ceres being planet. Ceres is the largest asteroid in the asteroid belt (between Mars and Jupiter). It's even large enough to have a ciruclar shape like a planet. I think it's considered a dawrf planet now. So how would that have fit into either of those phrases? My Very Excellent Mother Could Just Serve Us Nine Pizzas? XD

Pictures of Ceres if anyone is interested.

That is interesting. By your definition, Ceres indeed can be classified as a planet, but then won't all large asteroids that orbit the sun be.....? =(

Lmfao. Wait, let me get this straight.

An asteroid is considered a dwarf planet, but doesn't meet any of the other requirements. XD. Pluto, on the other hand, meets some requirements, yet it's not?

Scientist suck.

That would mean that the moon is a planet.

Hmm?
No, no, you misunderstand.....well, maybe not.

The moon is considered a satellite much the same way the earth and the other...erm, 8(??) planets are satellites of the sun. It just depends on the terminology.

No it does meet a lot of the requirements. The asteroids themselves are often refered to as minor planets. Pluto I think is also considered a dawrf planet along with Eris (formerly UB313), which is even beyond Pluto, and slightly larger than it. Don't konw much about that one though.

Since Pluto and Charon's center of mass is in the center of the two they are probably orbiting each other much like a double planet would. So Charon might not technically be Pluto's moon. But pluto does still have two other natural satelites, Nix and Hydra.

First of All lol I cant belive someone made a thread about Pluto,....but its a Very good topic...I dont think it is a planta....like the scientist say " Its too small to be a planet and to big to be a star" but the only thing im mad about is now they have to come up with a new song to memorize the plantes lol

In the future, it's possible that other planets, specifically the giant ones (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) could also be reclassified into something else.

Jupiter could have been star if it had sixty times more mass that it does now, and that's not that big in astronomical terms. It's possible that they could choose to call that planet something else.

LET'S CLASSIFY EVERYTHING INTO SOMETHING SO THE WHOLE WORLD GETS CONFUSED AND STUPID-ER. K? SOUNDS GOOD.

Seriously, what the fuck. Let's just leave everything the way it was. It makes things a hell of a lot easier. I personally don't want to re-learn everything I have been taught.

But they are discovering more and more things in the universe.

Reclassifying makes things more organized especially if you are an astronomer. Besides, it's not that big of a deal if Pluto is a planet or not. It's still out there.

Yes, they are discovering more and more things, but eventually it will end up being something like Homo-Sapien and the different animal categories. It's just going to get everything so mixed up and chaotic. @_@

I can just imagine it is going to be like Windows. XD. There will be a simpler version: The Mac, or the neater version: windows. XD

But just because we grew up with the notion that Pluto is a planet doesn't mean that there isn't room for change.
The sooner we accept the change, and I'm only saying this because it's what science dictates nowadays, the easier it will be to transition to this new notion that Pluto is a.....demi-planet.

Of course, assuming someone proves the contrary.
We'll just have to wait and see.
