*PRACTICE DEBATE* Atheism: Why I Do Not Believe in God

Moving onto something else...Savvywilt, let me put this in terms that you'll understand: you're an intolerant little douchebag. If the thought of a God comforts people, let them be comforted. You criticize Christianity for being intolerant. You attitude shows that you are JUST as intolerant.

Oh? So people should lie to themselves just so they don't have to face the truth. I'm intolerant of people who can't just face truth. I don't base my logic through faith, but truth. If people can't handle the fact that they die someday, then why live? I don't understand why people get such joy from lying to themselves and others. And I'm not intolerate to people believing what they want, but I'm intolerant to brainwashing future generations in what you call religion or faith.

Faith teaches people to obey an invisible man, and if you don't do what he says you will forever burn in Hell. Also teaches you what to hate, sets your moral values, not giving you a chance to think for yourself. Basically strips a person of all freedom we were born with in the first place. Sorry if I won't watch you and your religion brainwash more people to believe in "God".

God isn't all knowing, if he was Satan wouldn't exist. Only reason he exists is because religion needs to teach people to hate something. And why not, by religious stand points, I'm an evil freak who will burn in lake fire. But that isn't for the devil or God to decide, only me. Hate to break it to you guys, but no one controls your life other than you. A good life isn't handed to you on a silver platter.

And thanks for the douche bag thing, I like the ring of those words.

Your ignorance is amazing. Wow. So have you lived under a rock all your life or is this a recent thing? First off, I'm not Christian. Secondly, I know many Christians who are a hell of a lot more tolerant and intelligent than you are. Before you bash something, learn what the hell it is, kthx. It's a common courtesy.

Holy shit, have you died and come back to life? If not, you-- much like the rest of us-- don't know for a fact if there is an afterlife or not. But okay, I'll just give you the benefit of the doubt here. Now, where is your concrete proof against the existence of God? Oh you HAVE none. Why, that just makes you another obnoxious loud-mouth atheist.

PS: Satan as we know him today doesn't really make an appearance in the Bible. I believe you're thinking more of Paradise Lost by John Milton. A good read, but not exactly religious canon. Good try, but fail. :monster:

Well aren't you the morbid little Scrooge?

Alot of people genuinely believe in Christianity/whatever other religion. They discover it on their own, find the religion that works for them, etc. It's not all brainwashing. The brainwashing effect really comes into play when you have different sects/denominations of religions making up their own particular little ideas to accompany the texts they use, iinstead of just following a core belief.

Faith teaches people to obey an invisible man, and if you don't do what he says you will forever burn in Hell. Also teaches you what to hate, sets your moral values, not giving you a chance to think for yourself. Basically strips a person of all freedom we were born with in the first place. I think you have the definition of faith mixed up with "religious scare tactics." Faith is simply believing in something. If you close your eyes and tell the person behind you to catch you as you fall, you are having FAITH in them to catch you when you fall.

God isn't all knowing, if he was Satan wouldn't exist. Only reason he exists is because religion needs to teach people to hate something. And why not, by religious stand points, I'm an evil freak who will burn in lake fire. But that isn't for the devil or God to decide, only me. Who's to say God isn't a sadistic bastard? Who's to say God didn't let Satan happen so that humans would become more interesting to observe?

And religion is about alot more things than hate, I suggest you edumacate urself in world religions.

I think you have the definition of faith mixed up with "religious scare tactics." Faith is simply believing in something. If you close your eyes and tell the person behind you to catch you as you fall, you are having FAITH in them to catch you when you fall.

Actually, there are apparently two different kinds of faith--one based on religion, and the other based on probability. The former is probably more closely related to the "religious scare tactics" and are based on little to no evidence at all. The latter is based off of probability--you trust in something because based on what you have seen and experienced, and it seems to work consistently, and if it didn't work, you don't blame anyone or anything because you didn't eliminate any other event from happening.

And Eriythritol, rather than throwing a bunch of ad hominems, you should maybe actually address his points. Otherwise, you're not really adding much to the debate.

Yup because you know me so well lovely, you call me ignorant yet you seem to be all knowing just like God haha. No, I have not died yet, but I know for a fact that when things die, they cease to exist. How do I know this? Because I've seen decomposing bodies, and believe they're not coming back. And yup you just keep generalizing people love, you act like I'm the bad guy, whatever helps you sleep at night.

You're just as judgemental as the bible is, haha. And the bible has been revised so many times, believe me anytime there was something that contradicted God's teachings, it was cast out. Same way I'm just another "Loud mouthed Atheist" which I'm a quite soft spoken fellow, you should try talking to me before hopping to assumptions hun :P. And yes, you've talked me a couple times, you sure would know the level of my intelligence wouldn't you =/, and apparently I'm loud-mouthed XD!

And sorry if I don't throw myself under the bus with the rest of the people who can't accept what happens to us, but we are not special. The human race is extremely young, things have lived millions of years before us. Could it be possible things become extinct and that could be our fate? Same as everything else? No wait, we're special I forgot. Fact is, it's extremely naive to think you will transcend into a spiritual form and live forever in paradise. Why would you want to live forever, why even live on earth if you just die to live forever in heaven?

And yes I rather enjoyed Paradise Lost. And love, I hate to break it to ya, there is just as much truth in Paradise Lost as there is in the bible. Bunch of fairy tales that people take far too seriously. I couldn't care less if you were Christian, muslim, jewish, what have ya, there all the same crap. Bunch of books written by losers thousands of years ago that fools today take as being true. But I rather think for myself than believe what is told to me. Because why even have an opinion of your own when you can have one given to you with no effort of thought right? Or be brainwashed as a child so you're brought up to belive it. My faith can't be broken, because I have no faith, only truth.

I find you to be very hypocritical of yourself. You state plain and simple that
Well I'll put this in terms so everyone can understand. There is no God, I think it's extremely naive of people to believe that there is a heaven, and that in some way death is escapable. There are no angels watching over those that are "good", nor is there an omnipresence watching your every move to make sure your life goes the way you want it.
I could continue the quote further but I think it rather pointless. But what is different from what you are saying to with other individuals faiths teach them? It would be different if you would have said that this is the reason 'you' don't believe in God, but you simply state that there is no God. Now you said that faith teaches us "what to hate, sets your moral values, not giving you a chance to think for yourself. Basically strips a person of all freedom we were born with in the first place." Isn't the act of believing in God in the first place by choice, thinking for ourselves? We are born with the freedom to think for ourselves, and that also includes in believing in what ever we want. Sure you may think God doesn't exist, but that doesn't mean everyone believes it, and it doesn't mean everyone believes you are right.

Who cares if you think it childish to believe, who cares if their beliefs are unbelievable, the point is we have the freedom to believe in anything at all, what more can we ask than that? Would you make it so everyone doesn't believe in a certain faith because you don't agree with it? Well that would take away part of our free will. By reading some of your posts, I can't tell if you are actually stating that there is no God as a fact, or if it is your own opinion which is why I bring this up. 'There is no God' and "I believe there is no God' mean two different things, and some of you need to clarify what you mean.

Actually, there are apparently two different kinds of faith--one based on religion, and the other based on probability. The former is probably more closely related to the "religious scare tactics" and are based on little to no evidence at all. Good lord, there you go again, giving textbook answers to everything. And I am SO sorry I failed to mention the second type of faith! I figured I'd only mention the first type since, oh, you know, we're talking about religion and not statistical probabilities that can be proven and therefore require no faith because you know that they have a high chance of happening.

And Eriythritol, rather than throwing a bunch of ad hominems, you should maybe actually address his points. Otherwise, you're not really adding much to the debate.

Wee! You can toss around a simple phrase learned in highschool speech class! Doesn't help you sound smarter when she DID address his fail points.

I'd like to believe we have the free will to choose to believe what we want, but children rarely are presented with that opportunity. For children are gullible and impressionable, and if their parents tell them God exists, they're most likely to believe it. If they could decide for themselves that God didn't exist, it would take awhile, and some people, because they have been so well trained by their parents to believe in God, cannot believe that God might not exist at all. I know this doesn't happen to everyone, but some people are born in families who are very rigorous about their children being religious. And these children rarely ever get the free will to choose the religion they want--by the time their minds are developed enough to choose, they can't--their minds are too much rooted in the religion their parents made them believe in that they can't think of anything else.

Not really. She just threw some random comments and insults at her opponent.

I'm morbid because of the truth? It's not morbid to brain wash people in believing if you don't do what you are told you'll burn in hell? Not morbid that people have raped, murdered, and even killed themselves in the name of religion? Yeah I'm real fucked up compared to that stuff my friend haha.

And no, most people are brought up at a young age to believe in religious faith. There is no such thing as a religious child, just a child with religious parents. And there is a fine line between having faith in things at are realistic, not faith in a God because someone told you to have faith in him.

Tell me something oh wise one, how many people have died from not believing in religion? And how many have died because of their religious beliefs? Matter of fact I think there is a war going on right now because of that fine subject. Yet I am morbid? Wow.

God can't be a sadistic bastard, you have to exist to have a personality. The God religious people believe in goes so far beyond sadistic, there isn't word for it in the english language. And oh so just because religion is MORE than just hate than it's okay huh? That's interesting, so your saying if I taught a bunch of kids to murder and rape women, but at the same time taught them math it would be okay? By the way you talk Ronin that is A-OKAY!

Like I said, religion strips a person of all freedom they were born with, teaches you how to act, what to hate, how to live your life. They should just rename it to "Brainwashing people for dummies". And you keep assuming I haven't read anything about religion, considering I've read the bible twice as a child (forced of course) and have read the tranlation of the Koran. Quit jumping the gun fella.

Yes and now you're making it sound like every parent out there is some religious lunatic out to brainwash their kids and make them a religious clone. Well guess what? There ARE parents out there who don't try to get their kids to believe any specific religion. As a matter of fact, our very own Lady Aerith is one of them. You should try talking to her.

That wasn't my intent. I only mentioned that because children really are gullible and impressionable, and that there are parents who are too concerned about their children having a particular religion. I would like to see you point out where I did say all parents are like that, because I'm sure I did not say that.

You have to remember that this works both ways. Children can also be raised to believe that God does not exist. And because they have been trained by their parents to not believe in God, some cannot believe that God might exist.

And conversely, there are other cases where people are driven away from religion because they don't like going to church or because their parents force them to, and the more they're forced into it, the more they hate it. So they end up rejecting it. I'd say that's an even better reason for why certain people become atheists, and become strongly encouraged to put down the religion their parents forced them to have. Actually, there are many reasons and experiences for why people end up having the religion they have.

And Eriythritol, rather than throwing a bunch of ad hominems, you should maybe actually address his points. Otherwise, you're not really adding much to the debate.

Hey, how about I did. I just threw in a few ad hominems for the lulz. Oh, also because his attitude towards religious people pisses me off.

Yup because you know me so well lovely, you call me ignorant yet you seem to be all knowing just like God haha. Okay, the body decomposes. I think we all can agree on that one. However, religion is spiritual. No religious person believes that people get up and do a little jig after they die. The spirit is what continues to go on, or goes to heaven.

Okay, well, I can tell you how you've come off so far. In fact, I did. You proclaimed that there is no God, anyone who believed there is is a child, etc. You don't know anything more than the rest of us. You may believe that, but just because you believe it does not make it fact. Also, what the hell is with this fixation on the Bible? There ARE other religious texts, just as there are Gods other than the Jewish/Christian one that everyone dislikes so much.

And sorry if I don't throw myself under the bus with the rest of the people who can't accept what happens to us, but we are not special. The human race is extremely young, things have lived millions of years before us. Could it be possible things become extinct and that could be our fate? Same as everything else? People who are religious generally DO think for themselves, and don't necessarily believe everything in the Bible. You have your opinion, not truth. Truth is something that can be substantiated by fact. You have no facts to back your claim of no God.

Hey, how about I did. I just threw in a few ad hominems for the lulz. Oh, also because his attitude towards religious people pisses me off.

Ad hominems are not laughable, although you may choose to disagree, nor are they a worthy sign of decency in debate. And throwing in random insults isn't particularly admirable either.

I do not know whether to think the fact that you respond to his attitude by getting all pissed off over it is either amusing or not very constructive in terms of debate.

I admit I have no idea what you wish to accomplish with this debate.

If they don't believe everything in the bible, why even use it at all? I mean they must have read the bible with an external criteria for judging what they deem is correct and what isn't--that's not any different from any other free thinker or secularist now, is that?

I find you to be very hypocritical of yourself. You state plain and simple that

I could continue the quote further but I think it rather pointless. But what is different from what you are saying to with other individuals faiths teach them? Basically strips a person of all freedom we were born with in the first place." Isn't the act of believing in God in the first place by choice, thinking for ourselves? Yeah I'm a hypocrite because having no religion.. makes me bound to.. yeah, no I can't see where I'm a hypocrite =/.

Religion force teaches you, you don't learn on your own but are forced to believe in guide lines in which someone else has written for you. And I don't believe in God, but I also would like for people to understand what a waste of time it is to be religious. I'm not telling people to become atheists, I'm showing people how stupid it is to believe in what some fool wrote years and years ago.

I never told people what to set their morals to, I want people to stop acting like they're special and act like a mysterious force is watching over them. Telling people that God will watch over them if they obey him is a very stupid thing to believe in, yet people believe so. People do stupid acts to prove faith, I've never heard of an atheists doing stupid things to prove they have no faith. And why is that? Because we have nothing to prove. People want God to favor them, and will do some of the most selfish things just to do so.

I wouldn't say it's selfish of me to pick at someone's faith, but idealistic to prove that religion just suckers people, always has, always will. And can a kid really contemplate what God is? If I told a kid the sky was green, he would grow up to believe the sky was fucking green! Same way kids are brought up to believe God is all knowing. And something would have to exist for me to believe in it, period. And most people had their free will when they were handed the bible, long before I ever came into the picture.

It's funny that you call me a hypocrite when religion is just as hypocritical. You contradict yourself the same way your faith does. And yeah there is no God, there is nothing watching over us, there is no after life. I think it's rather selfish for people to think you continue to live after you die, when everything else dies. Huh and I'm supposed to be the asshole here, I think the rest of "Gods" creatures would be quite pissed off at you religious people.

K, you act like all religions out there are horrible violent cults. Thats why I told you to learn about world religions, like say, BUDDHISM.

3. You really like ranting about this murder and rape stuff. How about you give me some fucking passages of texts that support it. You act as if that's all religion talks about.

And you seem to be completely ignorant of other world religions and want us all to believe what you believe. You're just as bad.

You didn't directly say it, you only made it sound like all parents are out to brainwash their kids with religion.

Buddha is just another person who wanted to make a God out of himself. Quite selfish. He is the same way mate, teaches people what to believe and gives them a set of moral values. Did you know, that they did a survery in "peaceful" muslim countries such as Turkey. And asked them if they would martyr themselves to prove their face. A staggering 80%+ said yes they would to prove their faith. This is not radical places like Iraq, and Iran, but peaceful countries.

And yeah people dying of things like disease is totally in their grasp, because people give themselves cancer all the time by choice. No, people will murder in the name of faith, will rape in the name of faith, will pretty much anything as long as God says it's okay. Millions have raged wars for faith, and why? For own selfish gain so God loves them even more lol? Sounds real intelligent mate.

Oh wait.. God can't be proved he exists, no evidence has ever shown he did exist other than the words. GTFO =/ hypocrite.

YES! They're are thousand of God's in the muslim faith! Thousands! Can't believe how indepth liars can be can ya? People believe pretty much anything. And just because some religions have more than one God it makes it true all of a sudden, if so I can make up my own and get a sign up list for my own religion right now.

Religion's without God's is called philosophy.

Sure, pick up the book God, The Failed Hypothesis, it has tons of stories straight from the bible about raping women and how God endorsed it. Straight from the source, go read.

My ideals are realistic and don't hold me back from enjoying life. I don't fill myself with false hope and stupidity that I will live forever. Sorry if I don't throw myself under the bus and bound myself with religious shit just so I can feel better about my inevitable, and only fate of death.

D'aww, you don't deem the insults lulz worthy. Laaame. I'm not an admirable person and never claimed to be. And please, like this is a real debate. Tell me when CSPAN is covering it. I have no idea what ANYONE is wishing to accomplish with this debate. No one is actually right, and no one is going change another person's mind. It's completely fruitless. I just jumped in because you were completely wrong with your little Biblical facts. Face it, historians dated the New Testament as being written no later than 150 CE. It was not written "hundreds of years after Jesus died." Now I'm sure you probably want to contest that, and we all know that 20 year olds know a lot more than historians who date shit as a job. Right. Moving on.

If they don't believe everything in the bible, why even use it at all? I mean they must have read the bible with an external criteria for judging what they deem is correct and what isn't--that's not any different from any other free thinker or secularist now, is that?

That's stupid. Why does it have to be all or nothing? People who believe in God are just like you or me, believe it or not. They aren't all lobotomized and walking around with perma-drool on their chins all the time. They can actually think for themselves, and choose to believe/disagree with bits and pieces of the Bible at will. Overall, the Bible really isn't a bad book. It teaches you (if you wanna use that word) some very good things. Sure, it's dated. But c'mon, turn the other cheek when someone wrongs you, do unto others as you would have done unto you-- those are good lesson to live by. Unfortunately, the good gets obscured by extremists who highlight the bad. But I digress. Like I said, the belief in God goes beyond the Bible. There are tons of people who believe in God and have never read the Bible. Ultimately, it's free will and faith.

I know this might be hard to understand, but not every religious person out there wants to tie you down to a chair and tell you to convert or they cut your head off. And the only thing you're showing us is how bleakly ignorant your perspectives are.

But mommy says I'm special.... *cries*

Funny, I seem to remember in your first post in this thread you said to cherish your friends and life cuz you never know when they or you might go...that sounds an awful lot like specialty. OH LOOK I FOUND IT!

Live life to the fullest guys, we don't have any second chances, and always appreciate those around you, never know what will happen to them.

You keep contradicting yourself. That's not a very smart way to debate.

Your example fails. If you told a kid the sky was green he would only believe you until he went to preschool and learned his colors. Then he'd realize you lied to him. You keep saying God isn't real. Well how about you prove it to us, right here and now. Go on. Prove to us God isn't real. You seem so confident in your assumption.

So now are you saying Bei is a Christian or Muslim or something? Last I checked, she wasn't very religious. Now you're just assuming that we're all Christians or Muslims in here, just like you assume ALL religions of the world are out to raep wimminz.

And how the hell is it selfish to presume that there will be some sort of afterlife? OH BOO HOO GODS CREATURES WILL BE PISSED. Yeah here's a clue for ya: they wouldn't be pissed off about that because they wouldn't have the mental and emotional capacity for it.

You want people to stop acting like they're spacial and act like a mysterious force is watching over them, yet you say you never told people what to set their morals to? Let me tell ya buddy you're doing it right now! Telling people to stop acting in any way is telling them what to set their morals to.

That's funny that I never mentioned what religion I believe, or if I even believe in any religion, so how do I contradict myself the same way my faith does if you don't even know what faith I am.

I find your arguments very weak. You state that there is no god, but all you do is state it. You have yet to bring in any creditable evidence at all. You don't have any discussions for your reason on why God doesn't exist. Just because you state it, doesn't make it true.

I can state that the universe doesn't go on forever and it just spirals, but that doesn't make it true just because I state it. I'd have to come up with some sort of evidence which you have yet to show.

Such as you didn't argue about the main point of my post you argued about me calling you a hypocrite, and the reason I said you were being hypocritical was that you said
Religion force teaches you
What is the difference between religion forcing to teach us, and you forcing to teach us that there is no God?
