Punk Rock

green day and antiflag arent a certain genre because they are mainstream....its about their sound.
When did I say their popularity status determined their genre? I didn't. I'm telling you their sound IS pop punk. I don't know how to make this any clearer to you.

and btw....the ramones ARE pop punk....BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY SOUND LIKE IT...at least imo.
If you read my post I said they were pop punk.

My original point here is that Green Day and Anti-Flag, especially their recent albums, are a completely shitty starting point of listening to punk. The magic of punk rock is it's attitude, DIY ethics, and value, not just "how cool it sounds". "American Idiot" and most of Anti-Flag's albums scream "Hey look at me I'm trying too hard to cater to punk fans while still remaining friendly to the general public and make money".
Punk is a legendary genre, and I'd like to be able to spread bands that are worthy of it to people, rather than feed them the crap that punk was against in the first place.

Hands down I prefer Post-Punk and New Wave, they're just so much more varied and ironically more energetic. But for Punk (Rock) I suppose The Sex Pistols and The Clash are great examples.

PS: You might also want to check out The Stranglers and The Jam too but they're more 'New Wave'...

green days new cd is no doubt not punk but i just dont get how they sound poppy. green day is not blink 182 or new found glory(pop punk/rock imo).......different sound completely.

:/ o well i guess....to each his own

Lol @ the irony of anger in a punk thread. 4chan RAGE!!!!

TP, did you find your fix yet? =O

In addition to bands listed (or maybe including those that may have been listed) you could try:

The Descendents
Bad Religion
The Explosion (old shit)
Frenzal Rhomb
The Libertines
The Living End
SOME of Pattern Against User
Spitalfield (IIRC)
SR-71 (IIRC)
Stiff Little Fingers
Strike Anywhere
The Vandals

etc...

Just some bands on my IPOD that deviate from the norm like "S3x Pistoz!!!111" (nothing against them, "Anarchy In the UK" remains a favorite of mine, but they're so poster-boy), and some that I don't think I saw while skimming this funny ass thread.

I'll be honest with you. Even as a general fan of the genre, I think a lot of the songs produced are shit, but when you find gems, there are definite gems.

I consider OLD Green Day punk. It's still somewhat poppy but nothing like their new stuff.

Anyway, here are a few more punk bands to look into:
The Cigarettes
AFI (THEIR OLD STUFF! NEW STUFF DOESN'T COUNT)
Social Distortion
Bad Religion
Ramones
Sex Pistols

This was pretty much what I was going to type.

Also, there are some really decent smaller bands around at the moment in:
Sonic Boom Six
The King Blues
Set Your Goals
Polar Bear Club

All worth a listen

I'll name some bands I consider punk-rock when I get back from work tonight.

But I think the "No, this isn't punk rock at all!", a little but uncalled for... I mean... You can't really a label ONE band, and than another who has a different sound under one catagory. Oh Greenday is punk, and Blink 182 is as well.

How? They sound completely different.

It's just raising arguements, the whole stupid genres, of this belongs here, and that belongs there. If you know you like some bands, just type in "Bands alike -insert name here-" on google and you might find something you like. Some bands are shit, considering they fall under my "liking" genre. >.>

I think the genres are a matter of opinion, 'cause I asked one of my hiphop lover friends, what they'd call a song I let them hear, and they called it Gothic. Anyone know The Maine? Yeah, they're not.

Indie/Alternative/Punk/Rock/Pop bands, for some reason all tend to sound alike. Some call it mainstream, some call it their favourite band. ANYWAYS, I need to run, take a shower, and pray to god I'm not late for work, having all this typed out. I'll be damned. -_-

I'll post the list of my ideas tonight!

To be edited...
:wacky:
