I don't mind random encounters too much. When I first played Final Fantasy in 2005, I absolutely hated them! I was used to games like Spyro and Zelda. I had played plenty of Pokemon...but I had been able to control the random encounters in that by moving around the grass as much as possible. The caves in Pokemon were THE worst!
I'm more patient and tactical than I was at the age of 15. I enjoy levelling up and I enjoy honing my own skills as I learn how to manipulate the battle field according to the system (Final Fantasy X is my favourite example of how one can do this). However, sometimes, I just want to walk on and continue the story. I hate it when random encounters make a short journey last 20-30 minutes.
It depends on how frequent the encounters are. In the caves in Pokemon, for example, there were far too many in a row. I'd take one or two steps before a Pokemon jumped out.
