Redwall/Disney RPG

Jake rushed back to the stream on the mountain, where the group had chosen to camp for the night. The cliff jutted out enough above them to provide suitable shelter, and Brome didn't want Felldoh to go into the cave with his wrist the way it was.

Brome was right, Jake thought as he rushed back to camp. He'd been keeping watch above the cave as a Dragon crouched down so that he wouldn't be obvious in the moonlight. When he'd noticed a winged creature, much like a Dragon, approach the cave, he spread himself flat against the cliff floor, peering over the edge.

"Boldred the mapmaker... come out," the creature called. Jake could tell that it was a woman, but she was different. He'd crawled back over the edge and flew down to the others straightaway. They were only a few metres from the cave, so Jake thought they were extremely lucky that the creature didn't notice them. There was an air about her that Jake couldn't quite put his finger on, but it wasn't nice.

He shook Matthias awake as he landed, tapping the mouse on the head a couple times with his tail.

"Matthias, get up!" Jake whispered urgently. He was satisfied when Matthias began to rub his eyes, so he moved on to Martin, Brome, Orlando, and Felldoh respectively.

When they'd all awoken, he made them go over to the cave with him. "Let's go," he whispered urgently.

They all positioned themselves in front of the cave, at the back of the winged creature. Matthias stepped forward and held out his sword. "Who are you?" He made sure to keep the trepidation in his voice to a minimum.

Realization began to set in after Demona commanded for Boldred the mapmaker to come out: Her assessment of the activity inside the cave was inaccurate. She wondered how she could make such a novice mistake... she had been around for nearly 1080 years, after all. Perhaps her fatigue was worse than she thought. Now was certainly not the time for carelessness.

She was not left without a reply to her question, however. "Who are you?" said a voice from behind. Two mistakes in one moment... Demona hadn't even ascertained the presence of others outside of the cave. She turned to face the source of the voice. She had learned that Boldred the mapmaker was an owl. However, she saw four mice (one with a bandaged hand), a badger, and a winged creature such as she had never seen before. No owl. The realization of her own folly helped her to stifle her impatience and think more clearly. Seeing that finding Boldred would probably not be easy after all, she replied, "I am a gargoyle. I need a map of this world so that I may find my way back to where I came from." Her gaze went to the red winged creature with the green tinted scales and the yellow belly. He looks like either a flying lizard... or a mythical dragon, she thought. Since she had never seen a dragon, she wondered if he was simply one of Oberon's children trying to show off. Perhaps he was connected to the events that led her to this world... whatever they might be.

Demona turned her full attention to the lizard/dragon/Oberon's child. "Who are you? Are you from Avalon? Are you the one responsible for bringing me into this world of rodents?" Her eyes had returned to her normal state. However, she kept her mace handy. She thought perhaps one of the rodents was Cluny the Scourge. If that was the case, she had to exercise caution. She no longer had any need to speak to Cluny the Scourge. However, Cluny the Scourge was supposedly a great fighter. Fighting him would probably be time consuming... she just wanted to get back to Manhattan ASAP.

"I am a gargoyle. I need a map of this world so that I may find my way back to where I came from."

Felldoh and the others heard the creature speak, though they could not see its face fully. The moonlight shone away from the entrance to the cave, and its silvery glare was blocked by the cliff that jutted overhead, where Felldoh had hung only hours before.

Suddenly, she turned to Jake, saying, "Who are you? Are you from Avalon? Are you the one responsible for bringing me into this world of rodents?"

Jake let out a humourless laugh. "Right, me bring you here? I'm stuck here myself, lady." Neither he, Felldoh, nor Matthias could ignore the apparent grip that the gargoyle had on her mace.

"So," Jake said thoughtfully, "you're a gargoyle, huh? Hmph. You don't look like any gargoyle I've seen."

Orlando was less polite. "Look, I don't know what a gargoyle is, but I know that it's rude to barge in and start yelling out from here the the Eastern Sea." He stifled a yawn, continuing in a harsh monotone. "You woke us up." His lack of manners was rewarded by a thwack over the head from Brome's staff.

"Be polite, you great beast!" Brome scolded quietly. He turned to the gargoyle and said, "Sorry for that, we generally aren't so suspicious. But times are harsh, and we must do what we can to survive." Felldoh quirked his brow and gave Brome an appraising look; he wasn't used to Brome acting so rationally.

"If you're looking for Boldred, we are going through her cave. You can join us; you're bound to bump into her."

Felldoh's grip tightened on the broken spear he was holding in his right hand. What is Brome doing? he thought. We can't just invite someone like that, what if they're dangerous. He said nothing though, so as not to undermine his friend, and resolved personally to keep an eye on her. Jake, Martin, and Matthias must also have thought this; their grips had tightened as well.

We'll see how she plays, first, Felldoh thought.

"Right, me bring you here? I'm stuck here myself, lady," the lizard/dragon/Oberon's child scoffed. "So, you're a gargoyle, huh? Hmph. You don't look like any gargoyle I've seen." This creature has seen gargoyles, she thought.

The animal that looked like a badger spoke to her, then one of the rodents spoke next. Her gaze was fixated on the red winged creature, however. He obviously wasn't from this world. She wanted to know more. She heard the rodent say, "If you're looking for Boldred, we are going through her cave. You can join us; you're bound to bump into her." Her gaze finally broke from the red creature and she glanced at the speaking rodent.

"Yes... take me to her." She absentmindedly wondered how Macbeth's apparent lack of existence in this dimension would affect her. "Are one of you called Cluny the Scourge?" She turned to the winged creature. "You say you are... 'stuck here'. Are you seeking a way to leave this world?"

Felldoh spit on the ground, and Matthias grated as he spoke. "None of us are Cluny, I guarantee you. If we had our way, his heart would be upon our swords. I have vowed to kill that sea-rat, and mice like myself, Martin, and Brome will not rest until his evil is purged from our lands."

The gargoyle continue her speech, looking at Jake. "You say you are... 'stuck here'. Are you seeking a way to leave this world?"

"Yeah," Jake said. "I need to get back home to New York. I was pulled into this world, and I'm looking for my gramps. He usually knows how to work his magic mojo. Fu Dog got pulled in here too, and we have to find him." Jake cocked his head to the side slightly. "Are you from America?"

Felldoh shook his head. "Nevermind that, we need to get our sleep!" He yawned widely and obviously, covering his mouth with his bandaged paw. "Now that you've woken us up, Jake," - at this the squirrel whacked Jake in the face with his bushy tail - "we have to go back to bed. We're going through the cave in the morning. We've put it off for a day already, we're not going to put it off any longer." With an air of finality, he turned on his footpaw, his brush smacking Jake in the face again, and marched off towards the stream.

He laid down, but he didn't sleep. He would keep an eye on the gargoyle, even if it meant staying awake.

Jake looked back as the others filed after Felldoh. Turning back to the she-gargoyle, he said, "Nevermind them, you're stuck here too?"

New York? thought the gargoyle. That is where the Manhattan Island is located. America? Surely this creature is from the same planet I am from... perhaps he is being hunted down by those humans as well. As the animals left, she took the opportunity to answer the creature's questions and to ask some of her own. It seemed that this creature was related to a mage or a sorcerer of some sort. "Are you from America?" he had asked. "You're stuck here too?"

"I too am from a place called 'New York'. I reside near an island called 'Manhattan'. It is indeed in a country called 'America'. Were they from the same dimension? she wondered. She had hoped that perhaps there was an America somewhere in this world. She continued. "I have no recollection of what I was doing in the moments before I arrived in this world. I believe I was brought here by either a spell or a portal of some sort." The gargoyle finally let her mace go lax. She had taken on quite an interest in this creature. He seemed to not only know about the place from which she came... he also seemed to know of a mage who had the power to return them. Whichever New York they returned to made no difference to her. She would find out whatever information she needed in due time.

She had overheard one of the animals call the creature "Jake". "You are called 'Jake'... correct? I shall follow you to your New York." The prospect of finishing her revenge in New York almost made her smile.

Felldoh pulled Matthias and Martin off to the side as they came, making sure that the others were asleep.

"Look, mateys, I don't trust her," he whispered. "Jake's off talking with her, but we have to make sure that she isn't out of our sight." His glance shifted quickly to Brome, now settling dwn for sleep, and back to his other mouse-friends. "Brome invited her in too quickly. He may have his reasons, but I don't like it. There was something about that beast, something that just told me she wasn't to be trusted."

Martin nodded. "Felldoh, I don't trust her either. She just looks to evil. We didn't even get a clear view of her face, but those wings...and did you see the muscles on her? I'd reckon she could bash a few of our skulls in easily."

Matthias snorted. "Maybe yours, but only if we don't watch her. We have to keep an eye on her, friends, or else we may end up being in for the fight of our lives."

They nodded and grasped paws. The three went to sleep that night, knowing how unadvantageous it would be to the gargoyle to kils any of them; and so they slept soundly.

Whoa! Jake thought. She's from new York too! Great! Another one! It was all Jake could do to keep from jumping up and down in excitement.

"Yeah, come to New York with us! If we hurry, we can probably make the 2008 New Year."

"Yeah, come to New York with us! If we hurry, we can probably make the 2008 New Year," the creature called "Jake" said. Demona's mind drifted to Manhattan Island and the Manhattan Clan. She thought of that coward Goliath and the deluded gargoyles who followed him. She thought of Macbeth... the bastard who was responsible for killing the last of her clan. She thought of the Weird Sisters... the witches who cursed her with the immortal tie to her enemy. She thought of those humans... those disgusting, hateful creatures. Yes, the world would be much better off without their tyranny. She had to return to New York. If she didn't return, who would throw off the yoke of oppression? Certainly not that weakling Goliath! It was time for a new rule, a new order.

In her world, she was called Demona. That name was given to her by Macbeth for her prowess in battle. "You fight like a demon!" he told her once. Back then she was foolish enough to ally herself with the humans. Those Weird Sisters deceived her! They took the form of gargoyles and urged her to side with Macbeth. They promised to give her the body of her youth. She glanced down momentarily at her form. They kept their bargain, she thought bitterly. She thought of the destruction her clan suffered at the hands of those odious humans.

"New York... New Year," the proud gargoyle said absentmindedly.Yes, they must make haste. She wanted to give the gift of annihilation to the humans for their New Year's gift. Why not usher in the new year with a new rule? For now, she would have to figure out how to return. She turned to the creature called "Jake". "What manner of creature are you?" she inquired. "Do you suffer at the hands of the humans?"

"Suffer at their hands?" Jake said, laughing. "I am human." With a blur of blue Chi, Jake reverted back to human form. "We don't oppress anybody."

Jake cocked his head. He leaned against the wall, looking at her curiously. She was a gargoyle, that was for sure. But there was something about her, something he overlooked in his excitement.

She was magical. There was something about her that just told Jake she was magical. Most of the gargoyles didn't look human at all, really. But this girl-gargoyle, she was actually shaped like a human. With the exception of her grey skin, wild hair, and wings, she looked to be perfectly human.

"Are you half human too?" Jake asked his question as he turned and walked back towards their little makeshift camp, his shoes making little noise on the stone ground.

The gargoyle recoiled at what she just witnessed. The creature known as "Jake" turned into a human, right in front of her eyes. She cycled through anger, hatred, and revulsion at the form that now stood in front of her. "I am human," he told her. She took a few steps back. "No," she said softly. Surely he was a member of the third race. Humans had no ability to transform. How could this creature take the form of a human? Why would it take the form of a human? "Surely you are cursed," she muttered.

"Are you half-human, too?" Jake asked the gargoyle. Her eyes flared red with indignation. "Certainly not!" she hissed. "I am a gargoyle. I was simply cursed by that wretched Puck." She directed her anger toward Puck. "That miserable little imp said I would be 'flesh by dawn's fair light'... " She paused, thinking of the first time she saw her form in the mirror. "That fool," she growled. Catching herself before saying more, she calmed herself down and glanced over at the human figure. She had an idea. "Have you ever seen a gargoyle during the day?" she asked a bit rhetorically.

It struck her then. During the daytime, these rodents and the creature who chose to call himself "human" would witness her hideous transformation come daybreak. She had been speaking to the one called Jake for quite some time. Daybreak was only a few hours away. The gargoyle did not want the "human" nor the rodents to witness anything. What was she going to do? The transformation of the "human" flustered her. Was he truly human? Surely he was a member of the third race, not humanity. Humans simply could not transform.

The gargoyle had much to consider. "We will meet again," she said to the one called Jake. With that she spread her wings and started to fly away. The "human" was still her only lead for now. By now, she understood that visiting the mapmaker would probably be a fruitless endeavor. She had to figure out a plan of action.

Jake turned around and saw the gargoyle fly off. He stole a quick glance at his friends, and then at the horizon. It was still dark, but Jake could see the tendrils of daylight fingering their way across the sky.

In a blur of blue, Jake transformed into a Dragon and rushed after her in the air. His wings were a red blur as he strained to get enough speed to catch up.

He pulled a few feet underneath her and looked up.

"Where are you going? I thought you were going to come to Noonvale with us?"

The gargoyle flew on for a bit. Daybreak was growing nearer. "Where are you going?" She had hoped to beat the group to Boldred so that she could verify whether or not New York existed on this plain. Then she would trail the group to New York. The feasibility of this plan, however, sprung only from a sense of pride. There was no thought out reasoning behind her motive. She needed to clear her head. Was there any way of formulating a plan without anyone witnessing her transformation into her cursed form? Her mind raced to beat the approaching sun. Her mind kept coming back to only one answer.

The gargoyle circled back to the region of the cave. The unpleasant reality was peeking from the horizon and Jake was following her. She landed at the same place she began. She was just in time to finally come to accept the unpleasant answer to her own question. No, there was no way she could avoid being seen during this transformation. The sun shone its first brilliant rays of light. The gargoyle clenched her teeth.

"Behold... my cursed form," the gargoyle said through clenched teeth. Her wings began to recede. Her claws and feet changed in appearance... they were becoming like a human's. The gargoyle howled in pain as her ears grew smaller and her tail receded. At the end of the transformation, she appeared to be a human woman with red hair and green eyes. The gargoyle straightened up and looked at Jake with eyes that appeared so human, yet retained a ferocity that could not be transformed, nor taken away.

Jake landed near the gargoyle and watched, flinching as her radical transformation took place. Jake's transformation itself was blocked from view when the blue Chi encircled him (even he did not know what it looked like), but that of the gargoyle's was not. It was entirely visible.

And Jake almost thought he would be sick. It was putrifying to watch, and looked as though it hurt immensely. However, he kept a hold on his stomach, making sure not to throw up and be rude.

When the transformation was complete, the gargoyle uttered, "Behold...My cursed form." Jake could tell that she was repulsed from the human form.

"Why is it so cursed?" Jake asked. His Dragon ears, with hearing far greater than that of any human's, picked up the sound of his friends rising. He chose to ignore them. "What's wrong with being human? Not to mention, you look pretty hot..." Jake added as an utterance. He clapped his hand to his mouth as soon as he'd finished, the cold fact hitting him ahrd in the face that he'd just said that. What woul Rose think? Jake thought, pained by the idea that it would be a long time before he saw his loved ones again...

"What's wrong with being human? Not to mention, you look pretty hot..."

The red-headed woman flared at the question. "Because I am NOT human," the woman said vehemently. The woman stopped short of explaining that taking the form of a human was akin to taking the form of an insect. Her form had, after all, proven to be quite useful during various times in which she had planned to destroy humanity. "Gargoyles enter into stone sleep by day. I, however, do not turn into stone... but into this." The woman indicated her current form. "Puck has given me the... 'gift' of being able to see daylight." Tired from the combination of jetlag, lack of sleep, and the transformation, the woman was rapidly losing the energy to hate.

"I would like to rest myself near your camp until your party is ready to see the mapmaker," the woman said to Jake. She mused about the origins of this creature. Why would he choose to identify himself as human? Perhaps he was simply misinformed about the nature of the humans. That was a mystery for another day. For now, she waited for Jake so that she could follow him to his camp.

Jake blushed heavily and shrugged. He hadn't meant to let his little comment slip out.

"Sure, come on over. We'll be leaving in a few hours. At least," Jake said thoughtfully, "That seems to be what Felldoh wants to do." He turned and motioned back to the camp, outside the cave and to the left. "Come on, you can rest up near us. Just be careful, Matthias and the others haven't seen you like this yet."

Jake turned and walked back to the camp. It didn't surprise him to see the others snoring soundly. He'd let them rest for a while, before getting them up to go. He thought privately that Felldoh would whack him if Jake let him sleep too long. Jake was, by all means, far too excited to sleep, but he sat down and stared at the horizon. He looked to his left and saw Brome snoring lightly beside him. Without warning, the young mouse turned and curled up to Jake. Jake, still being a Dragon, was far larger than the mouse. Even so, though, he couldn't hide a smile at how cute Brome looked bunched up against his scales.

He turned back to the horizon and muttered to himself. "Rose, I'll be back. Just give me some time..." A tear fell from Jake's eye as he thought of his love back home...

The red-headed woman had not needed to sleep in such an open area for centuries. She had never needed to sleep in the open in her human form. She was extremely unhappy with the vulnerability it presented. She rested her back against a tree and sat down. Her hand was propped on her mace as if it were a mere walking stick. Not trusting the group enough to go to sleep, the woman watched the camp intently.

The woman began thinking of plans and strategies. She wondered if trading places with Macbeth would break their bond and curse once and for all. After all, how could they still be linked if Macbeth were sent to a world where none of the three races exist? So far, it looked as if New York or its ancestors didn't even exist in this world. The woman thought of many, many different things as she watched the camp.

Felldoh did not sleep as everyone thought he had. He was wide awake after a few hours of sleep; long enough to notice Jake and the woman come back. From what Felldoh could gather through hearing the two of them (squirrel ears were very sharp), the woman was the gargoyle. It had taken all his willpower to continue to look as though he were sleeping when he'd heard this.

He put it out of his mind quickly. Either way, she could be dangerous. But, what Jake muttered to himself beside Brome made Felldoh feel as though he were being intrusive, and the pain he felt from the young boy's voice sent a tear down his eye, too.

Rose. Felldoh's heart pained upon hearing that name. He knew, very well, that Rose had died. Brome had told him on the way up the mountain what had happened after his death. However, though he knew it was impossible for Jake to be talking about the same Rose he knew, he couldn't stop the pictures that came unbidden to mind.

The mousemaiden was beautiful; Felldoh would never have though he'd see one so radiant. From their encounter, Felldoh could tell that, like Brome, she'd had a heart and soul untouched by war and misery, slavery and tyranny.

He fell asleep with thoughts of the mousemaid in his mind, regretting that he could not be there to save her life...

The woman continued to sit in the solitude of shade. She briefly considered going to sleep. After all, there wasn't much a group of rodents could do to her, even in her human form. She decided against it. She'd better not take any chances... Though the creature called Jake claimed to be human, the red-headed woman suspected that he may actually be a displaced member of the third race. Perhaps he simply forgot his roots. Oberon's children were a real hassle sometimes. The woman thought of Puck and the Weird Sisters with disdain.

The woman was not accustomed to waiting for others, least of all waiting for rodents. The concept began to bother her. She grew increasingly moody as she waited for the others to rise. She wondered if the rodents had any intention of going to New York along with her and the creature named Jake. She hoped they were not that foolish. Even the humans exterminated rodents in New York.

As the sun rose, the shadows in which the woman sat deepened. She was ready to travel and not at all keen on simply waiting around.

Felldoh awoke to beign prodded with Matthias' sword. He slapped the metal blade away with his bushy tail, groaning as he rubbed his eyes.

"Wake up, sleepyhead," Matthias yawned. "We've got to get a move on."

Martin added in, too. "Yes, we have to be at Noonvale by sunset. I want to go and see everyone again...Who knows, we might even meet Boldred. You'd like her, Felldoh, she's very good company."

Felldoh grunted and looked up, wiping the sleep out of his eyes. With a yelp, he jumped back; there was another human standing by them!

Jake, seeing what Felldoh was jumping at, put a hand on the squirrel's shoulder. "Relax, it's our gargoyle friend. It looks like she becomes a human during the day." Felldoh eyed the woman cautiously before he went and dunked his head in the stream alongside Brome, Matthias, and Orlando (Matthias had to whack Orlando in the rump with his blade before he could wake up that boulder). The cool water jerked him awake, and he shivered from his head to the tip of his brush.

Shaking his head to dry off, he took charge. "Right, mateys," he said, stifling a yawn, "Let's get a move on." Felldoh shouldered his haversack and broken spear. He looked at his weapon forlornly. "I wonder if I'll be able to get a new spear in Noonvale." He walked into the cave and set his face through the cavern, Brome and the others behind him. Turning back, he called, "Hey gargoyle lady, are you coming along?"
