Who here has rented before?

Who here hasn't?

I'm sure most everyone has rented at least one stage in their lives.

If not you're very lucky! =D

My parents have always owned their own homes and so when I first moved out I found it strange renting.

I've lived at two rental properties now. One was through a private landlord and the other (which is the one we're in now) goes through the real estate.

Are there any funny, weird, annoying, terrible stories you can share in regards to renting?

I have a ton but it'll take me forever to write and I just wanted to get the topic up first. XD

Ever had a crazy landlord?
Ridiculous rules you had to follow?
A terrible incident?

You can discuss anything in here.
Why you rent, why you hate/love renting, why you've never rented.
How you've always owned your own home etc.

Personally, renting is suiting Steve and my lifestyle at the moment as we're trying to pay off all our bills without having to worry about a mortgage plus rates etc etc. I think we'd die if we added our own house on top of all the other things we're trying to pay off. XD

My family has owned a few properties over the years but I've always lived in a rented house.

The landlords of the current house I live in are pretty slack, there has always been one issue or another with the place but they rarely do anything about it. I'd be more than happy to call in and pay for a plumber or whatever when something goes wrong, but the landlords are the 'do it yourself' types. Back in 2006, we had white ants which left a big hole in the kitchen floor... that still hasn't been fixed yet.

The plus side to this though it it means we get really cheap rent plus the house is in a great location. So it's not too bad. To be honest I don't mind renting, being up to my neck in mortgage is just as bad imo.

The main thing I hate about renting with the current real estate is that they're quick to say, 'Oh you've gotta have that fixed ASAP!' I'll be around next week to make sure you've cleaned it up!

He was referring to some grass clippings and some cars we had on the front lawn.

We got the cars off the lawn and we're getting my dad out with his ute tomorrow to help us dump the grass clippings.

Anyway, whenever we want something done, like having the fence fixed because it's falling down, or getting the front screen door lock fixed so we don't have to use a key to look it from the inside all the time, they take their sweet ass time. It's been two years and they've not fixed any of it yet. <_<

If it was something major I'd be complaining more often, but at the moment we only mention these things to them when they come for an inspection.

Oh well, cheap rent is the main thing. >.<

I'm currently renting an apartment. The way I see it, there are pros and cons for renting and owning. Sure, renting can be a pain because it's not your place and you can take a lot of shit from a landlord. But on the same token, we're not responsible for maintaining the property aside from what's inside the space we live in.

I contemplated buying a house when I was single. Especially with the market being really good for a buyer. But the idea of rolling around in a home by myself is a bit depressing, and having to mow the lawn and such for just me to enjoy, isn't really worth it. With a family, it would be much more worth it, so I'd rather wait until I'm married to buy a house. But for now, renting an apartment works just fine, so I'll stick with that. :lew:

^^^ Yeah we have to mow the lawn at our house and it really is so time consuming for the both of us. I wish I didn't get this place sometimes. There is just so much grass. We don't have pets or kids, so the yard is really pointless and it's not even ours. =/

---

I just remembered a weird incident I had with our old landlord. >.<

He came over to inspect the townhouse we were living in and when he was in the upstairs bathroom he starting scratching the toilet seat. 0_o

There were a few cracks in it from the previous tenant and so I guess he was trying to figure out if we had done it or not seeing as he probably hadn't noticed it before.

I was just like 'EWWW' our butts have been on that. XD And you're just scratching at it with your fingernails. XD

And another time he came over he used our second toilet downstairs to do a big poo.

I was like, dude you're here for a five minute inspection? But you spend half an hour shitting in our downstairs toilet that is right next to our kitchen and lounge room?

Just because you own the place technically doesn't mean you can just poo here whenever you want! XD

It was so gross. He seriously didn't even seem to think he was being rude. We live here at the moment mate! We don't want to smell your stinkyness!

I thought he was just going in for a number one. >.<

He was one of those weird 40 year old mummies boys, who brings over his mummy to show me how to clean the shower. <_< I know how to clean the shower! I'm not stupid!

Oh man, that sucks. Even if we had to cut our lawn, it's not much, but it is unfair to have tenants cut the lawn. Me and my girlfriend don't have kids or pets either, but more than anything, we want to be married before buying a home. I'm imagining its more difficult for an unmarried couple to be qualified to buy a home than a married couple, so it would just be easier that way. I can't wait until we own our own home though. :ryan:

John and I are currently renting an apartment. We plan to buy a house sometime this year and move out next February or March.

So far it hasn't been bad. We did have one incident where the apartment management was going to inspect each apartment because of suspicious activity. John stayed home from work that day and said that no one showed up. Weird.

We do have neighbors that party almost every night. Seriously, it's Sunday night at 1 am and they have loud music playing. Also, the guy who lives there sounds like a very angry drunk and he kind of scares me. Other people have complained and they were asked to turn their music down, which they have.

Other than that, no real problems.

Well since my dad is a Super at all the buildings we lived in, we never have to worry about rent. Or even any other bills like water, gas, electricity, etc. He says that's why he chose this career path. So that we'd be free from having to pay rent and bills.

When we go to Florida, I think he'll be getting extras too. I believe it's free cable and central air conditioning. Which is friggin awesome beyond all belief.

As for myself, I'm still with them. I have no clue what I'm gonna do yet as far as living arrangements go when I move out.

technically i rent from my mum, but because she is my mum she doesnt mind me treating the place like a drug den and knocking holes in the wall and having in door bonfires.

she wouldnt dare say anything because she knows i'd beat her so bad she'd be pissing blood for weeks.
