Zachary Clement - South Gate
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The day was beginning to draw to a close judging by the height of the sun on the horizon. It cast a warm, relaxing glow over Zachary and the entire land he was travelling through. As the gentle trot of Chocobo steps continued like a metronome, he closed his eyes and allowed the Choc-drawn carriage to walk on at a steady pace. Unknown to Zachary, the carriage had arrived at the South Gate much quicker than expected.
"Ahem!" The guard coughed intentionally to wake Zachary from his nap.
Startled, Zachary awoke, with his limbs flailing slightly as if to stop himself falling from the cart. His eyes began to focus on the stern faced figure in front of him. Whoever it was, they didn't seem best pleased. The guard hoisted his trousers up in an authoritative manor and slowly approached the young thief.
"You lost, boy? Best you take yourself elsewhere. Quickly."
The guard was all talk, and Zachary knew it. The whole tough-guy act didn't wash with him, but he was in no mood to waste time arguing. Lindblum was waiting for him and he was desperate to get on that airship before it left. Mimicking the guard, Zachary hoisted his bottoms and slowly walked forward.
"....BOOM!" Zachary pressed the pass he had "acquired" from the half-wit trader back in Treno, into the guards nose.
"Lost? I don't think so. The Festival of the Hunt is coming up in Lindblum and someone needs to deliver the finest resources Treno has to offer!"
It suddenly dawned on Zachary that he actually had no idea what was in the sacks on the back of the stolen carriage. He was concerned, but had an unwavering nerve in tense situations. His years as a thief around the various streets of Treno prepared him to keep calm in all situations. The now somewhat deflated guard looked at the pass, glanced at the carriage and then directly at a vacant Zachary; who figured he needed to act a bit more like a common trader. Stupid.
"I'm not interested in your story. Just get your crap and load it onto the ship." The guard clearly had no desire to continue any conversation with Zachary, and signaled to gatekeepers to unlock the gates.
With enthusiasm, Zachary jumped back onto the carriage and hoisted the reigns of the Chocobo's. With one almighty wark, the Chocobo's strode forward through the gates and towards the loading dock of the airship. It was an incredible sight, brand new to his eyes. Growing up in Treno, Zachary was used to fancy gadgets and luxury clothing that the regents insisted on flaunting. It was the norm, and it was also now, the stolen. Luxuries aside, an airship of this stature was something he had never seen, and it was breathtaking. He had been gawping at it for so long that he had not noticed an overly friendly and efficient worker load the carriage onto the ship.
"All done, sir!" The worker tipped his cap and wholeheartedly patted Zachary on the back.
"Wha...Oh, the...I mean my carriage. Thanks, buddy." He was captivated by the mechanical beauty. So much so, that his cover could easily have been blown should a more hardened to the world official taken the carriage instead.
Zachary could see people were now boarding the ship. His stomach turned with nerves and excitement. Two feelings he hadn't experienced in a long time. Too long. With a deep breath, he took his first step onto the ladder which was leading up to the ship. One by one the ladder runs vanished below him, until he reached the top. The engines were now whirring, ready to go. The smell of warm oil filled the air, as the whole structure began to vibrate. It was either the ship or it was the whole of his body shaking with excitement, Zachary couldn't be sure.
"Preparing to depart!" A loud bellow came from above the floor Zachary was on.
This was it.
