((Here is the opening of the Village of Dali. The intent of this RP is to provide a space for people to bring in characters and try them out, do things if they want, or just stop posting. Because the focus of this is on the setting, and not on a plot surrounding specific player characters, things won't/shouldn't be dependent on people posting regularly. As a result, rules will be a little different than a normal play by post RP, to help facilitate the unique style of play it's intended for.
In addition to the standard respect each other/no god-modding/other rules, here's the rundown:
1. When you first begin posting/start posting with a new character, please include a tiny blurb on the character OOC (I prefer the (()) to mark OOC comments, but anything works as long as it's clear that it's out of character). If you want to link a larger write up on a character, stick it in the [Discussion] (Currently Undecided Location) thread or put a link to it after your blurb.
2. Please use characters that work in FF9. Obviously, the point is to use original characters, and feel free to use races that aren't only from 9 (considering how many races there are in 9, one more won't break the bank), but try to tweak characters to make them appropriate to the 9 setting.
3. If people stop posting, some retconning is allowed to avoid being stuck mid-conversation/action. If you're going to be gone more than a week, please note it in the [Discussion] (Currently Undecided Location) or in an OOC blurb in your last post before you leave. If you don't do this and take over a week posting, other players have every right to assume your character wandered off/wasn't there in the first place.
4. Feel free to make some assumptions regarding NPCs and their actions/dialogue. I'll be here on a regular basis to respond, but you shouldn't need me for every little thing. To help with this, I'm including some minor notes on the setting and characters in this first post.
5. Have fun, and interact with NPCs and other players as much as possible. This is all about using your original characters and getting a feel for them, so don't feel self-conscious. This thread is for you as players, and not just for the hosts to tell a story (granted, we're going to do that too, but it's not the main point).
All that being said, here's the setting/character information.

Village of Dali:
Dali Characters:
The sun rises on another day in the calm Village of Dali. The cargo ship has just returned from a run to Alexandria, and adults are unloading containers into the old crop storage doors.
In the village proper, Eve begins unpacking the new shipment that came in on the cargo ship, and Hal shifts from sleeping in his bed to sleeping at his desk.
For the third week in a row the village is mostly devoid of life, the old crop field turned airship field emptying of adults as soon as they unload everything. Children play out in the town, young adults run the establishments (aside from Innkeeper Hal, the one adult), and the adults are no where to be seen.

Village of Dali:
- The Village:
- Shop
- Weapons/Armour Shop
- The shelves are always well stocked with equipment, and more arrives from Alexandria about once a week (including some rare items, now and again). The equipment is nothing to be impressed by, but neither are the monsters that roam the Nolrich Heights.
- Shop
- Mayor's House - Connected to the Windmill
- A nice home, befitting of the man in charge of Dali, the doors are always open, but the mayor is rarely accepting visitors. A small statue of Queen Brahne sits on the mayor's desk, and next to it the mayor often has a mug of imported coffee.
- Windmill
- Though not in use anymore, the windmill is still in decent repair and still spinning in the constant breeze that moves over the Nolrich Heights. The parts show wear from years of use, but a layer of dust is starting to settle on the gears. Yaff is usually sitting on the access hatch to some of the underground mechanisms for the the mill.
- Inn
- A small, quaint establishment, it seems to be the only place in town (aside from the tiny crop field) where an adult can be found doing work during the day. A small fire place is almost always going, and Hal the Innkeeper keeps a jug of iced tea (or a pot of coffee, depending on the time of day) full for any guests that might wander in. There's only a single room with four beds, but the rarity of visitors to Dali means that the four beds are normally more than enough. Anyone who rents the room finds that the bed has a complimentary potion and antidote set on it each day when the room is cleaned.
- Crop Field/Garden
- The actual crop fields have largely been converted into a landing area for airships and all that's left is a small garden tended to by an Old Lady. Oglops try to eat the crops, and have ruined any leftover crops that started on their own in the original fields. The garden is a nice place to watch the occasional airship arrive or take off, and has a hatch leading to what was once a storage area underground where the harvest would be stored.
- Airship Field
- Formerly farm fields, the crops have been neglected, and what hasn't been eaten by oglops has been choked out by grass or other weeds. The main ship seen here is Dali's own cargo ship, but now and again Alexandrian vessels will set down and drop off supplies of varying sorts. The arriving supplies help restock the shops, but mostly seem to be strange containers taken down into the old crop underground storage. The main export seems to be barrels taken out of the crop storage, but no one seems to know what happens between containers going down and barrels coming back up.
- Bar
- During the day, the bar largely functions as a restaurant and medicine shop, but at night several adults show up out of nowhere and fill the bar. Drinking and singing is not uncommon at night, and the mood seems to be generally cheerful as long as outsiders aren't present. Even when outsiders are present, as long as they have a bit to drink and don't ask too many questions they're welcome to join in on the merriment.
- *Menu*
1. Black ale: 5 Gil
2. White ale: 8 Gil
3. Red wine: 7 Gil
4. White wine: 9 Gil
5. Water: 1 Gil
6. Gysahl liqueur: 11 Gil
No underage drinking allowed!
Cash only
* We sell medicine
- Underground:
(Currently only accessible by adult citizens of Dali)
- Black Mage Factory
- Set up only a couple of weeks ago, production is already in full swing. The complex spans from under the Windmill to just outside the garden on the edge of town. A large machine sucks in mist from a tunnel that connects to the lower part of the continent and produces eggs. The eggs head down into another strange machine, where they are hatched. Out of the hatcher comes inactive Black Mages which are sent down the line and packaged into coffin-like boxes by a third and final machine. In addition to placing the coffins into barrels, the adults spend the day working on the three machines to keep them in top working order.
- Chocobo Stables/Well
- The village's Chocobos are kept in the underground stable, the original stable torn down to make room for the airship field. Three chocobos can be found here, taken up above-ground on the weekends to get some time out in the fields, wandering about.
- Storage
- Dozens of strange boxes fill two large rooms, and pieces of wood from opened and emptied boxes sit against the walls.
- Door to the mist
- A large door holds back the mist that rises up through the tunnels, and keeps fiendish creatures gifted with Black Magic from getting into the factory and the village.
- Surrounding Area: Nolrich Heights:
- South Gate
- The connection between Alexandria and Lindblum, a guard from nearby Treno mans the gate at all times. Regular visits from workers from Vega, a Treno item shop mean that travellers can get what they need even if the gate is closed down. The proper papers are required to pass, and smuggling anything between Alexandrian and Lindblum territory is considered a very serious offence.
- Observatory Mountain
- The old man Morrid lives up on Observatory Mountain, keeping things there in working order. The mountain acts as a guide for airship captains in the area, helping them gain their bearings (especially on their way to South Gate, after the long trip over the Mist).
- Ice Cavern
- The path is cold as an eternal winter, some strange magical force keeping icy winds blowing through the tunnel at all times. The only reliable path up from the Mist, extremely lost travellers will rarely arrive from the Cavern, though the monsters likely take far more travellers than make it through. A single Moogle makes his home somewhere in the Cavern, and if someone is willing to brave the cold and the monsters, the Ice Cavern is beautiful.
Dali Characters:
- Village Citizens:
- Mayor Kapu
- Kapu rarely leaves his home, and is less than welcoming to people outside of the Village residents. He is brother to the Innkeeper, Hal, and their rivalry leads to somewhat bitter feelings towards each other. He's often got one of the village adults meeting with him, and will quickly send any outsiders back out of his home.
- "Snot-nosed" Gudo
- A bratty kid, he spends most of his time running around the village, playing with Yacha and Marin. Gudo is fascinated by the Black Mages being built under the town, and takes interest in anyone that comes through town and knows how to use magic. His father, the mayor, has been too busy for him lately, so he's getting into more trouble than usual.
- "Pasty" Yacha
- A pest like his friend Gudo, Yacha also runs around all day. Unlike Gudo, he is terrified of the Black Mages, and wants things to go back to how they used to be. Now and again Yacha can be found helping out the Old Lady in the garden, driving oglops off from the crops or running to grab her supplies and tools from in town.
- "Bratty" Marin
- Marin can be found playing with Yacha and Gudo about half of the time. She loves to sneak down underground and spend time with the chocobos, only to get chased back out by the adults when they find her.
- Innkeeper Hal
- Hal, always inferior to his older brother, the mayor, is the only adult still running his own shop. He wishes that things could go back to how they were, since even as a small farming community they used to have more visitors. Dali was once a nice calm stop-off for travelers from Lindblum or Treno to Alexandria, but in the last couple weeks things have become uncomfortable enough for visitors that they aren't stopping by as often. Hal is frustrated with the current situation and wants nothing to do with the Black Mages. Due to the lack of visitors, Hal is spending more and more time sleeping on the job.
- Shopkeeper Eve
- Eve, a younger girl, spends her days running her parent's item shop, keeping the shelves stocked and clean. She does her best to keep an eye on the three kids during the day, and is warm and welcoming to visitors. Her knowledge of the equipment she's selling is limited, but she tries her hardest to help out anyone that comes through.
- "Dutiful Daughter" Slai
- Her father runs the local bar in the evening, and it's up to Slai to prepare things for the busy nights during the day. She has a bad habit of sleeping in late, and consequently has to work hard and fast to get things ready. She's a slacker by nature, but almost always has things ready for when the adults get back from their difficult day's work.
- Yaff
- Yaff is a standard teenage boy: he does his best to sneak away from what he should be doing (guarding the hatch to the underground) to talk to girls instead. He pops into both the shop and the bar regularly, flirting with both the girls.
- Old Lady Durilda
- Durilda thinks that the Black Mage production is a terrible and dangerous idea, and keeps working on the small crop patch that is left. Unfortunately, her years are catching up with her, and she can barely handle even the garden herself, often getting Yacha to help her.
- Observatory Mountain:
- Morrid
- Morrid maintains the Dali cargo ship and the equipment on Observatory Mountain. He lives outside of town in solitude, enjoying his hermit-like lifestyle. Not terribly personable, he ranges from disinterested (when he's recently had coffee) to downright rude.
- Morrid is a huge fan of coffee and has recently decided he wants to try blends from regions all over the world. He's currently looking for: Alexandrian, Cleyram, Trenan, Lindblum, Burman, Kirman, and Moccha coffee.
- South Gate:
- Guard
- There's always a guard working at the South Gate walking path, but the tiny slit that makes conversation possible makes it impossible to tell just who is working there. All of the guards seem very dedicated to their duty, and carefully check over any paperwork allowing passage through the gate.
- "Part-time Worker" Mary
- Mary works at Vega, an item shop in Treno. She often runs behind on her regularly scheduled visits to the South Gate. She rarely has any customers, and spends a lot of time chatting with the Guard on duty.
- Ice Cavern
- Mois (Moogle)
- Mois makes his home in a nice open area in the Ice Cavern. For some unknown reason, no monsters make their way into his section of the cave, so he spends a lot of his time relaxing and enjoying the cold (his fur is thicker than a normal Moogle's, so he can't stand warm or even moderate weather). Mois has a legendary quick temper, and swears like a sailor when upset. Fortunately, he rarely has visitors, so few people are subjected to his mood swings.))
