Samarkand city from Uzbekistan. a lot like FFX's Zanarkand eh? well I just stumbled upon this on wikipedia. and there isn't any discussion about this found in the internet, if there's any. so let's see what are your thoughts about this. could Zanarkand really be inspired from this? though Uzbekistan is from Central Asia. there's a thread here that said Spira is Asian-inspired and particularly more on South-East, but not really sure if it is.

o____o

Well...You can't really miss the similarities in name and architecture. I'm sure the world of Spira took inspiration from a lot of cultures, be it central or south-eastern asia.

Really does look a lot like it though.

Just pinch a place, change a couple of letters, no-one will ever know.

Well done Tetra Master you sussed them out.

I can see some similarities I suppose. The names sound very alike anyway lol and the picture posted looks awesome. Perhaps that's what influenced them to make Zanarkand? Maybe it is just a crazy coincidence! :P

Nice find!

Well, alot of things in Final Fantasy durive from all the ancient cultures or people of the world.

I.E.(I know it's FFVII): Midgard is "Earth" in Norse Mythology.

I knew of Samarkand a while ago, it's where a fairy tale about a witch is set or some shit.

There are obviously similarities, yeah.

I don't know if SE have ever confirmed this though, they borrow inspiration from a wide array of places.

Haha reading this thread totally freaked me out, I just started an essay on Angela Carters short story "The Kiss" and it's set in Samarkand!
But yeah it's legendary for being so exotic and such and does seem really similar to Zanarkand! Pretty good comparison I'd say.
Lacks a Blitzball stadium though!! :D

there isn't A LOT of similarity, but there is some. no machina or bliztball stadium though...damn

Although there could be some links to it...

.........Inspiration for Zanarkand? ...Maybe, in all truth, the only similarities I see is in the name and when viewing the ruins of Zanarkand, but certainly not the former Zanarkand in its glory. If anything, it looks as if it served more as an inspiration for the temples then the actual city itself; it’s an interesting find though.

I...honestly don't see any similarities at all...not even when comparing the ruins of Zanarkand. The architecture is completely different.

It's only the registan area seen on the picture but.. I believe there's a similarity with the architecture of the buildings. It's like, let's say, they took this city and twisted it. they gave it a far mechanical and futuristic design. the little similarity I visibly notice is the twirly tops of the structures.

as for the name similarity, well it's really intriguing.. as if it tells it. wikipedia says they're also similar in terms of status as a "beacon" of civilization. Mmmm I'm curious to know the answer.

err I don't understand your words well.

well of course there's probably no need to have a game like blitzball for proof. Blitzball didn't even originate at Zanarkand right? I mean if Zanarkand is actually inspired from this real life city.

Martyn, your post is hard to understand. Can you please reword it? From what I can get out of it, it doesn't add anything to this topic.
