Yes a new FF is coming and i always kept hoping ever since FF9 was released that there would be an awesome strong villian who could beat Sephiroth and kick Sephiroth of his throne. Well a new FF is coming and i'm hoping that there will be an awesome villian, maybe someone like Kefka <3 or Seymour! or whatever. I just get tired of all this FF7 crap over and over again... remakes, movies, spin-offs, side games, all for FF7 and this overshadows FF8 and 9 really really big.

I just want a new villian... someone fresh and cool, a new cool villian. I used to like Sephiroth because of his looks ( the hair, coat, sword, eyes ) and because he used to be good but turned evil. But his fanbase and the endless FF7 remake stuff ruined it for me, way too much hype. Now i want a new villian, who else agrees and hopes for a new villian to show up in FF13 and will be stronger and cooler than Sephiroth?

And besides... Sephiroth isnt even that cool. ! SPOILERS !

SPOILERS!!

-

Sephiroth wasnt even in the game untill like disc 3, all you actually saw was his ugly mother Jenova mimicing her son, so Jenova killed Aeris, Sephiroth is stuck in that crystal being cut in half or something.

END OF SPOILERS!!!! ( i dont know how to hide spoilers lol )

Well I can't really comment on how the FFXIII or Agito bad guy will turn out but I like the look of the main bad guy in Versus XIII. He just seems decent because it looks like a game based on dark fantasy so he's realistic yet probably has the fantasy powers.

I'm not one for villains like Sephiroth mainly because I REALLY don't want another character whored by fanboys for the next 10 years D:

I'm not arsed whether certain characters are whored or not, makes no difference on how I feel about them. I do hope there is a good villain though, Vayne seemed abit poo to me in XII so we are overdue a good one, there wasn't really a great one in X either really. Seymour was just a nuicance, Sin was just a big blob of water and Yu Yevon was just pathetic, although it is one of my favourite games....anyway

We need a proper arsehole that we love to hate I think

When I played IX the first time around, it always looked like they were trying to find someone to compete with Sephiroth with Kuja, and I think that made me dislike IX a bit at the time. So I wouldn't want someone to be made with the soul purpose of being a better villian.

If it fits with the story and they makes you shout at the tv when you're playing! Then that'll be good enough for me!

I agree with Baralai, I don't want a villain to be created solely for the competition with Sephiroth. I would like a villain that is somehow connected to the main character though, but not another clones/genomes storyline!!!!!!!!!!!! Personally I preferred the Squall/Seifer rivalry to that of Cloud/Sephiroth, the brooding competitive streak of Seifer was a lot cooler than Sephiroth's whinging about clones and lack of identity all the time.

Vayne was actually better then some villains, who simply had a mindless boring goal.

I'd just prefer someone, more human like, in a way like Vayne, but to be more evil. No amazing super powers, no overly dramatic emo past.

Point being, sephiroth was the best villain of his time (VII), but should not be brought back ever again. He should have never been touched in the first place in crappy games like Kingdom Hearts.

The appeal he had was way to stretched out, and the only thing that could ever bring Seph justice would be a remake of VII. Most likely we won't see that, and if we do it will be to late.

I want a more unique evil character, maybe who someone who is mentally ill in a sense (not like kefka), but someone who is very intelligent at the same time. Maybe just think of some "inhuman" traits, like emotionless. Most evil characters are only interested in power and money and infamy, but why not put someone who is very powerful, yet emotionless to the core.

A new villian would definitley change things around. If he/she were to compete with sephiroth than that would be kinda cool

Nah, Seph will never be replaced. He's like the basic foundation for all FF bad guys, get rid of the foundation and the whole thing collapses :P

I absolutely hate it when people purposely dislike something because the general public really likes it. it's like, you're turned off to it because everyone else really likes to a fanatic degree. i say make your own god damned opinion based on the character itself. if you like him, you like him. just fucking accept it. don't deny that you like him just because everyone else likes him. that's absolutely retarded.

by the same token, don't like him just because everyone else likes him. basically, don't jump on the boat and don't purposely avoid the boat. make your own decision.

Anyway, it seems like many of the FF villains are some sort of different version from Kefka. I played FFVII before playing FFVI and was surprised as to the similarities between the storylines. In many of the Final Fantasy games since, there is a time in which the "heroes" play in a world of peace, then the villains go and ruin the world somehow. Then the rest of the game is played in the world of ruin. (I don't count being teleported to another world, such as in certain predecessors to FFVI.)

Also, many of these games have more than one antagonist. Emperor Gestahl/ Kefka in FFVI, Shinra/ Sephiroth in FFVII, etc. I hope the new set of antagonists bring a unique storyline... and of course are "cool" (appealing).

Actually, that's one of the biggest misconceptions that both casual fans, as well as those fans who really dislike the VII fandom and so want to discredit the much hyped Sephiroth as much as possible, usually perceive.

Warning, this will contain many spoilers and will be quite indepth to those not in the know:

Jenova was an ancient and mindless entity that sought to bring about nothing but destruction in her wake. All of her individual cells and parts have a special genetic encoding, which means that if circumstances ever force them to seperate, they will instinctively want to rejoin with one another, hence the term 'Jenova Reunion'. At the start of the game proper, Jenova was held within cryo-stasis within Shinra Inc's main headquarters, whilst Sephiroth had already been defeated some time prior by Cloud. His body washed up through the life-stream towards the Northern Crater. As stated within the game, Sephiroth traversed the life-stream and gained both the wisdom and knowledge of the Cetra (i.e the Ancients).

Sephiroth never had any spiritual abilities before, but he learned them within the life-stream. He used one such power and skill of the Ancients in order to create a semi-physical manifestation of his spirit from beyond the life-stream; this is one of Sephiroth's aspects that the group see constantly throughout the game. This skill can be seen clearly in display in the Temple of the Ancients. Aeris remarks that, though the Ancients are long since gone, they have left their spirits behind in order to guard the temple - though it has been so many years that they have given up the ability to speak.

However, that is only one part of his agenda. Though this skill allows for mental representations (i.e appearing to others, and toying with Cloud's minds) it only allows for minor physical interactions. He needed something more. Jenova provided this. Though Jenova's cells are all supposed to be under her control, such was Sephiroth's will, and such was the knowledge and power he gained from the life-stream, that Sephiroth became the one in control. As stated by Hojo, Vincent, and various points in the game, the Jenova cells have the power to change appearances. Sephiroth forced his Will on Jenova and used her parts to create replicas of himself. It was in this way that Jenova broke out of Shinra Inc, that Sephiroth 'cast off' Jenova parts in order to fight the group several times during the game (each time leaving behind a Jenova part - this was one of the many clues towards all of this) and how Sephiroth killed Aeris. It was never Jenova. He simply used her body in order to carry out the act from beyond the life-stream.

Going back to the Jenova cells themselves, it was for this reason that Sephiroth was so able to manipulate Cloud and toy with his mind, because Cloud has Jenova cells implanted within him. Jenova's cells went towards their predefined goal, a reunion, but Sephiroth had planned not for Jenova to be reborn - but himself at the center of the life-stream. It was for this reason that he summoned Meteor, as it was an act that Jenova had once done millenia ago, and so, was how he discovered this dark forbidden materia and magic.

So Sephiroth does face the group throughout the game, yet they never face his true form. Only his spirit using Jenova's body, or his mental representation. He never got to inact the reunion. It was this very intent which forms the basis of Advent Children. Though the life-stream had broken down spiritual energy, as it usually does upon death, such was Sephiroth's power that he managed to hold on to some aspect of his very being, and so his essence was only broken down into three distinct parts - Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz. With Geostigma (i.e Jenova's cells infecting the planet and people like a cancer) becoming widespread, it was the perfect chance to perform a stronger reunion and become reborn as a God.

In the end of the film of course, only Kadaj managed to 'forge' himself with Jenova's cells - reborning Sephiroth, but only one third of his true self, which was why Cloud was able to beat him as he did. Who knows what would happen if a true reunion of Sephiroth, and all his power that he has gained over the years, were ever unleashed.

So yeah, I hope that clears things up. Sephiroth did do all of those events that you mentioned, and so, is why he is heralded as so cool and the best villian by far.

As for the original question itself, I can't speak for every VII fan but I believe that we've all wanted another villian to snatch Sephiroth from his throne. We've wanted someone to come along, to be so evil and touch your emotions to make you care about events, but so far, it hasn't happened. At least, not to his calibur. I hope that XIII will attempt the challenge, as it is time for a new major villain.

I just mentioned it briefly there, but I completely disagree with the comments that this villain should be 'emotionless'. What made Sephiroth so great was that he WAS partly human. He WAS a good guy. It was only when he discovered who he truly was - that he was twisted by others - that he began upon the dark path and became the great villain that we all know. Which made it that more bitter-sweat when he killed Aeris. So yeah, this new villain definately has to have emotions, and deep connections with ALL of the main characters within the game, not just one or two.

Oh lord, no! I don't want the Sephiroth Archetype to be brought back. If anything I'd prefer XIII's villain to be like Vayne, to have actual human goals and motives, and not just "LOLZ destroy teh world!" I agree that this villain should be 'more evil' than Vayne, but not in the sense that they're just mindless killers with an unoriginal destruction plot up their sleeve.

Although, I think FF is due another Female villain. FFIII Cloud of Darkness > five games later > FFVIII Ultimecia > five games later > FFXIII =D To be honest, a female nemesis juxtoposed to Lightning would be pretty cool.

I totally agree with you. It would be so badass, as well, if she was a smoking babe.

Interesting idea, and I bloody agree. Sure Sephiroth was cool but its been long enough, another badass bad guy needs to knock him off his throne.

And it wouldn't be too bad if it was a girl for once.

Anyone who don't like sephiroth will have to answer to sephiroth....er yeah? Vaine was crap, Seph will rule for ever cuase he's just so freakin awsome! I mean seph had his own music that still rates today as one of the best pieces of music in the ff universe!

I'm kind of torn between my feelings on bumping Sephiroth over as the most popular villain in the series. I think it'd be a monumental task and I fear that SE might go overboard and attempt to develop an incredibly-complicated character who, at the end of the tunnel, will be nothing above average. That said, I'm confident that a new villain will give Sephiroth a run for his money and that so much fanboyism might, finally, start to die down. I just hope people don't try to compare the two too much.

Here's what I don't want to happen: a Seymour/Sin sort of combo. Just one villain is good enough, really. Not one villain trying to become another or being created/controlled by another. (Vayne and Venat, Sephiroth and Jenova, Seymour and Sin/Yu Yevon, Edea and whatserface, Kuja and Garland, etcetera.)

Oh, and I disagree with unphased's explanation of the Sephiroth thing, but that post was made like a month ago. >_>;

I'd love for a female villain too, just to show that women can give men a run for their money. :P

Yeah a female villain would be good, and i dunno from what i've seen so far of FF XIII it doesn't look like there's gonna be that much of an evil force at work, if anything i think the evillest villain might come from Versus cause to me that seems to have a darker aura about it and it looks like the world thats more in trouble out of the two.
