Should next FF gen bring back literally its roots?

I've been thinking how good were my steps in a Final Fantasy, especially with FFIX! I thought at the time no other game could be superior on a storyline, superior to those characters that I dared to dissect every last word coming from their mouths, to the ambiance in general so comforting and inviting me to be part of it, the voracious hunger for exploring each corner, oh well... so many things that kept me playing innumerous times.

Now that I'm a bit grown up, and now that I'm trying to see FFXIII from the prism of being just a phase to Square (the 13 number never brought luck if you believe it), I want to know from you if old-school games (mention those from VI to IX) are closer to its players than the trend persecutors like FFXIII, what's been happening these last years basically.

I don't know if it's just me, or actually many fans out there have the feeling that technology doesn't necessary means improvement in many ways on Jrpg's. I like to play the kinds of Fallout and Mass Effect, but those have complete different meaning and are directed to different markets. And then I want the cut scenes to be a special moment instead of being the whole game a cut scene. Speak what’s in your mind!

Well I liked the voice acting of FFX
And FF12 is one of my favo battle systems.. I know they improve their graphics etc..but I actually like this newer technology improvements...its SE own fault if they focus more on that aspect than on story. but you gotta know a lot already has been done,, its hard too make up a good storyline thats original these days..its common sense..but also too shameful :(

Perhaps technlogy isn't the main concern, the problem is how and how much is used. I think the subject is just very complex to speak about freely, because at the same moment FFXIII has many things that fans asked for, but becomes hard to fully expirience the whole game... time will tell, maybe the game becomes better in the future, a very long one

Well with all of this technology uproar, most companies, especially Square Enix, tend to go all forward to exploiting the capacities of most consoles. We are in a HD era so basically that encourages most game developers to make games closer to movies with lots of cut-scenes (coughffxiiicough) than making real games. Sure I enjoy a good cut scene, when it has a meaning, and by that like something plot-twisting.

Playing an FF game nowadays feels like watching a movie. :hmph:

I don't mind them going back to their more simplistic roots. In fact, I don't mind -at all- if the next final fantasy game is on a handheld. The upcoming handheld systems have amazing graphical capabilities and should complement the next Final Fantasy entry rather well. Granted they return to their roots and make a classic Final Fantasy game. They should take what's good about IV-VI (or even IX) innovate on it, add new things and update it to the year 2011.

Think about it, FFXV on the 3DS? Everyone will own one, and there's so much room for taking advantage of the device's capabilities.

I actually consider Final Fantasy XIII to be a bit retro and it gave me a bit of a retro feeling. I'm not talking graphics wise, I'm just saying that Lightning reminded me of a PC from 2D Final Fantasy games, and the way she jumps from platform to platform also reminded me of early video games. Not to mention that there was one part in XIII which reminded me of a part in VI.

So for me, I actually did get a bit of a retro fix from XIII. Maybe it's not the way it was intended, but yeah.

With a lot of things, not just video games, it seems creators are too reliant on technology to carry them. Back in the older days technology was more limited and people had to be more creative or it wouldn't have been worth playing or in the case of movies watching. I'm not saying technology is to blame it's just the way some creators use it. They're too reliant on it and I think some of the times they get lazy and don't want to be as creative. It's sad that we have all these resources to make great looking games and movies and some people have lost their creativity. There are some exceptions like with Bioware but I think this does speak for a lot of people.

For me personally I think the last good Final Fantasy game was X. These days though I think Square are trying to appeal to a very different audience and it wouldn't surprise me if there were people who never played any of the previous Final Fantasy games who liked XII and XIII while the long-term Final Fantasy fans hate them for not keeping to the tradition of Final Fantasy. I personally don't care if they take away some FF "trademarks" as long as there's a good story and such but for me it just haven't been appealing, and I don't think the FF "trademarks" would have made it better.

Capcom is doing the same thing with Resident Evil really. The regular gamers of today like the newer Resident Evil titles better than the long-term Resident Evil fans who prefer the feel from the older games.

Do you like the path FF is goin'?

So I was just curious, who likes the way the new FF games are going?

I played the most recent FF that came out on the console which was FF XIII and don't get me wrong I really enjoyed it, its just that I miss the old style of play. FF IX in my opinion was the best. I miss the the free roam experience, roaming cities, doing small quests and tasks, etc. I really don't like the fact that in FF XIII all I did was run forward and fight constantly.

Does anyone else feel this way? Do you like the path they're goin'? Any game recommendations?
Let it all out. :awesome:

the newer ff are ok but the only one i liked since x is xiii

11..... dont do mmo's :)

12..... worse ff in history

game recommendations.. kingdom hearts :) if you do... number 2 and birth by sleep

star ocean is an good game as well... the last hope is epic :)

and dissidia.. nothing beats dissidia :)

and welcome to the forums :)

On the one hand, I might stick up for the ongoing path of Final Fantasy in some situations.

On the other hand, the games lately haven't been as well-received. So unless Square wants to become a niche (or more of a niche, depending on how you look at it), it looks like something needs to change from its current path. Hopefully that change will come with Versus.

Haha thanks for the post and thanks for the welcome!
I agree with basically everything you said :).
Also I never heard of Dissidia I'll look it up.

I made up my mind and I finally come to think that FFXII was the only to merge both FF tradition and high technology well. Besides if SE tends to one ground only, things get on the loose. It's a risk if they are going straight on technology or into tradition. It doesn't mean they won't have room to be creative in my opinion.

I see nothing wrong with the current path Square Enix is taking with the Final Fantasy series. If they kept everything the same I'm sure then people would be hating on it because every game feels the exact same way and rip on Square Enix for not doing anything new or original. It's a lose/lose situation which will spawn hate no matter what they do. I can understand if you have a legitimate beef with the games but overall I think they're still doing a good job with them.

I disagree, you can make a game different without the need to go down the route that Square-Enix did. I didn't overly mind Final Fantasy X and hated Final Fantasy XII, although the latter is a love-hate game in general but when it came to Final Fantasy XIII they tried to westernise the entire game without any respect for what people liked about the franchise anyway, and that's literally its roots.

Kitase even said they had western developers "test" the game and give "feedback" in which they were too far into development to do anything about it. To me that's a perfect example of why people have the right to hate the title, Square-Enix try to westernise a title and the first time they get proper feedback on how to do it, they don't use it.

They should just go back to the beginning, keep an interesting, gripping and fun battle system and leveling system, a simple yet not overly generic storyline and gripping characters and change things bit by bit. Not trying to change everything in one go like Final Fantasy XIII.
