So as you may or may not know; one of the best things about XCOM ( and XCOM 2 furthermore ) is that you can customise your troops! XCOM 2 goes one step further by not only increasing the customisation options available but allowing us to create a 'character' pool - meaning people we create can be soldiers that join XCOM, Civilians that we can save etc etc.
PLEASE READ: if you select any class other than 'Rookie' Then you will not appear in the game until much later. The specific classes are used as rewards whereas 'Rookies' are recruitable at the beginning of the game - HOWEVER this means that when they are recruited what class they will become is randomised. No moaning if you dont even appear in the game until the last mission if you pick a certain class though!
FYI - Any info you don't provide i'll pick for you.
Those marked with a * are compulsory fields.
VIP is someone you rescue, Rookie is a soldier you can hire and Dark VIP is someone you need to capture; basically someone working for the aliens and I dont think they are usable.
Psi Operatives use psychic abilities
Ranger uses a sword & run and gun style tactics
Grenadier uses rockets and grenades
Specialist is a medic/hacker
Sharpshooter is a sniper
The personalities Laidback/Twitchy etc are cosmetic only.
So basically if you want to be in my XCOM 2 save , probably die but maybe not, here we go!
