Smoking

When is a persons smoking habit too much? recently a cousin of mines parents died from lung cancer brought on from smoking. This caused My cousin and her brother to be sent to a foster family. So my question is is a persons cigarettes worth the chance you could die and leave your family with no one to take care of them? I know people die from other stuff to but im focusing on the effects of smoking.

This happened to my grandfather as well. He used to smoke two packs a day. Even after he was diagnosed, he still continued doing it.

I think it's too much when you can't control your urges to smoke anymore. Like you'll drop everything to go out and have a smoke--even when you're in a meeting or in class. Or people like my grandfather who couldn't stop amidst a sickness. I know people who are like this. I think smoking is fine, as long as you're well aware of what it can do to your system. I used to smoke quite often (once, with marijuana) but I never got addicted to it, for some reason. I decided to stop two semesters ago and I haven't touched any cigarettes since, so I think it never became a habit for me.

I think it's true though that there are very addicting chemicals in cigarettes. I read somewhere that there were 4000 chemicals in a single cigarette and only 50 of those are actually known. Strange that it's still legal, now that I think about it.

Anyways, in the state of Va, USA, smoking has been banned from all enclosed public buildings. This got me thinking: ok, it's not a health concern, and if you pick non-smoking, you won't even smell it. And if you say you do, you're a liar. And even if you did, I guess the clusterfuck of all the other smells in a restaraunt is soooo much better right? So: why have they banned smoking from public places?

So, I have to go outside to smoke and lose my seat at the bar all the time because Ms or Mr Perfecto is too busy checking their throats for lumps. That they will never get..

Thanx

No one's forcing you to go outside to smoke. You do that on your own. And it really depends on the restaurant. A lot of restaurants have non-smoking seats right outside of the bar. So if person A happens to be sitting in a non-smoking seat that's right next to the bar area and person b is puffing on a cigarette on the other side of the divider, person A will smell it.

First off, from a medical standpoint, I'm going to state the obvious. Yes, its bad for you. Smoking increases your risk of: Esophageal cancer, Tracheal cancer, bladder cancer, Lung cancer, COPD, stroke, and heart attack to name just a few off the top of my head. In all of my reading in my Med Surg book for nursing you can look at many diagnoses and note that the modifiable risk factors for many diseases involve smoking.

Next, I'm going to state another obvious. Its a person's personal choice whether or not they choose to smoke. If they know the risks then its their body and their choice if they want to do it. I don't personally like when people smoke around me because 1)It stinks and I therefore stink when I go home from public places when people are smoking near me....and 2) I don't appreciate the risk of cancer from secondhand smoke. However, like they choose to smoke, I can choose to move away from them and the smoke and hopefully avoid it for the most part.

Here's the part that bothers me- I live in a state that has also banned public smoking in many places. Its not the smoking itself that bothers me because I am a nonsmoker, but the fact that the government has reached out and figured out another way to control what we do in our lives. They want to tax our sweets (soda tax), ban us from smoking (no smoking in public places), and now in San Franciso they want to ban toys in happy meals with a high fat/caloric content. We all have the ability to make choices in our lives living in what is supposed to be a "free country" and yet they are finding more ways to eliminate the choices that we make. They are trying to dictate how we live our lives and THAT is what upsets me.

My thought is You can walk out your door and get hit by a car...Theres a million and one ways to die.....
As I feel sorry for what happend but even without smoking who could say what would happen tomorrow?
No smoking is not good at all, mind you im a smoker, and quite frankly I think its a vile habbit myself.
Smoking is legal as is drinking, wich i think is much worse, what one does to ones body is ones choice. Granted there are, again, a million and one ways to die when you think about it so even as bad as it is there are worse things to be addicted to even if it means death. All arround I think smoking is a lesser evil even knowing what the end results may be

It becomes to much when it effects me in some negative manner (ex. in or near my home where I can smell the smoke/be affected by it). I don't mind having to walk passed a smoker if they're smoking outside. It's annoying having to smell the shit and it makes me sick, but I can always just move aside or walk in front of them. I suppose if a person wants to smoke and increase their chances (not saying it always turns out that way) of becoming sick or dying from some element that it is none of my business UNLESS that person is a family member or someone I care for dearly.

Does it not go both ways- if you don't like it, don't sit near them. Besides, most resturaunts are pretty keen on the concept. If they are that stressed about something so little, maybe they should take up smoking. It is, after all, a stress reliever :ryan:

Seriously though, it's a bunch of drama for nothing. We went 100's of years smoking in public places, and now some crackpot scientist has a theory on secondhand smoke (which is crap) so everyone all of a sudden shuns smoking.
I think it's stupid

Unfortunately, for a lot of restaurants, you don't have a choice of where you sit. :lew:

Although I can agree that some people go way overboard. Like I said, I prefer not to inhale cigarette smoke because I find the smell unpleasant but I don't freak out about it if someone is smoking either. Most of my family smokes and usually when they light up, I just leave the room. I'm not going to tell someone what they can and can't do in their own home. :wacky:
