The earliest known Mayan calendar has been found in an ancient house in Guatemala and it offers no hint that the world's end is imminent, researchers said Thursday.

Rather, the painted room in the residential complex at Xultun was likely the place where the town scribe kept records, scrawling computations on the walls in an effort to find "harmony between sky events and sacred rituals," said the study in the journal Science.

The hieroglyphs date back to the ninth century, making them hundreds of years older than the calendars in the Maya Codices, which were recorded in bark-paper books from 1300 to 1521.

Some appear to be the 365-day solar calendar, the 584-day cycle of the planet Venus and the 780-day cycle of Mars, said archaeologist William Saturno of Boston University, who led the exploration and excavation.

According to Saturno, the writing looks like someone's attempt to sort out a very long math problem, as if on a blackboard.

"For the first time we get to see what may be actual records kept by a scribe, whose job was to be official record keeper of a Maya community," Saturno said.

"The ancient Maya predicted the world would continue, that 7,000 years from now, things would be exactly like this," he added.

"We keep looking for endings. The Maya were looking for a guarantee that nothing would change. It's an entirely different mindset."

Furthermore, there is no sign that the much-hyped myth that the Mayan calendar would end in 2012, and with it the world, has any bearing in reality.

All that ended in 2012 was one of its calendar cycles, said co-author Anthony Aveni, professor of astronomy and anthropology at Colgate University.

"It's like the odometer of a car, with the Maya calendar rolling over from the 120,000s to 130,000," said Aveni.

"The car gets a step closer to the junkyard as the numbers turn over; the Maya just start over," he added.

"The most exciting point is that we now see that the Maya were making such computations hundreds of years -- and in places other than books -- before they recorded them in the Codices."

Even though the 12-square mile (31-square kilometer) site of Xultun, deep in a rainforest where tens of thousands of people once lived, was first discovered about 100 years ago, the house structure where the calendar is drawn on the walls was spotted in 2010.

Researchers say careful excavations have revealed that the paintings inside -- including some of human figures wearing feather head-dresses -- show the first examples of Mayan art on a house interior.

"It's weird that the Xultun finds exist at all," Saturno said. "Such writings and artwork on walls don't preserve well in the Maya lowlands, especially in a house buried only a meter (three feet) below the surface."

I just read this earlier today and laughed.
I never believed the world was going to end because i am not mentally ill :ahmed:

But all the people who were panicking about it will probably feel a bit stupid.

However the other theory about entering a new time/era/dimension still going strong. Or next 7000 years nothing will change and that tbh will suck ass imo.....sigh..
 
there's still going to be a ridiculous amount of fear mongering from fox and rupert murdoch at the time though. it's just like the millenium bug

Damn, I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen on Dec. 21st, 2012. Zombie Apocalypse? Giant Meteor crashing down? A giant whale destroying cities? A witch from the future compressing time? A psycho clown becoming a God?

So many possibilities.
 
Doesn't it? I think I saw something like that in a movie called Cloverfield. Or something. I can't remember where I got the idea from.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure many people still believe in the whole "zombie apocalypse" stuff though. Especially with the bath salts fiasco. ^^;

The world can still end. Any year, any day, any second. We will not know until its too late and fr damn sure nobody will be able to post about it. My money will be thats its our fault. Mankind is doomed to destroy themselves one way or another, wether instantly or slowly ^^

I never thought the world would end anyway. When it does happen I'll be dead anyway. But then again, anything is possible. It could end tomorrow. I'm just looking forward to the 22nd, when I can call everybody that believed it a, "Sucka" Lol.
 
I agree. There was so much hype up for it, and then the day came and went without much of anything really. Kinda disappointing to be honest. The hype for the rapture last year was much better.
 
I was watching this documentary about 2012 a few days ago, and this guy was acting like he was some kind of expert on the whole thing. He went to this place where all these people lived, who were all descended from the Mayans. He asked them all if they've heard of 2012 and the world ending, and they had no idea what he was going on about. Then he went and asked some chap who was the eldest of those descendants, and he just said it was an excuse for people to make money. Made me laugh so much.

I have absolutely no idea where people got the idea of the world ending. Yeah, the Mayan calendar ended, and people were all like "Oh, there must be a reason they ended it on 2012!!"

...

Maybe they just got tired of writing the damn thing. -_-
 
Ahhh, seriously after time passed I laughed at those who believed the world is gonna end especially to those people who dedicated time into building whatever basement or bunker and stocking up on food and GUNS AND AMMUNITION thinking there's a possibility of a zombie apocalypse!
