(AP) BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Soccer fans are crying fowl over kicking an owl. In fact, they're crying a lot worse.

An apologetic player is facing sanctions after he kicked an injured owl that landed on the field during a game in Colombia on Sunday. The owl was a mascot for the opposing team and was being treated Monday at a veterinary clinic in Barranquilla. The bird is expected to recover from a slight fracture of its right leg.

The owl had landed injured near the corner of the field when Panama defender Luis Moreno of the Colombian club Deportivo Pereira walked over and kicked it about three yards. Atletico Junior fans shouted "murderer, murderer."

Moreno said he did not know the bird was a good-luck charm.

"I want to apologize to the fans," he said after the game. "I was not trying to hurt the owl. I did it to see if it would fly."

Pereira club president Francisco Javier Lopez said the player would be punished. Moreno also could be disciplined by soccer's governing body in Colombia. Animal welfare officials said there are no animal cruelty laws in Colombia.

"It made me very angry that he kicked the little animal," said Atletico Junior player Luia Paez, who scored a goal during Atletico's 2-1 victory. "It was already injured by being struck by the ball. I said a bunch of awful things to him. I was really angry."

I read this and I got so upset. Just because you are a soccer celeb what gives you the right to try punting an innocent little animal??? Punt the ball dude, not the nearby friggin' wildlife please. :rage: :rage: :rage:

Yes, an injured owl is on the pitch pretty much defenceless and you decide that a good kick at it that would certainly grievously injure or likely kill it, is just the beneficial thing needed at that moment in time to see if the injured owl could fly. How about he just...I dunno, do what he's supposed to do and stick to the game? What point was he really trying to make by kicking the bird in front of so many spectators? Still, at least he's being apologetic (despite the crap excuse) whether or not it's sincere or not and the owl appears to be alright judging by the article.

:hmmm:

*loads a gun, flies to Colombia and shoots this person*

Taken care of. :dave:

Seriously, it's no wonder environmentalists and animal lovers will go crazy every once in a while and start getting violent on other humans--it's because people do this kind of stuff. Until the day the legal system makes the punishment for abusing an animal and abusing a human equal, this kind of thing will never stop. He'll probably just get a fine and a slap on the wrist, rather than getting whatever punishment there is for beating another human half to death. And I don't get how people can be like "Well, animals just aren't worth as much as humans so they don't need as much protection," because this guy isn't worth as much as my cat's turds in the litter box.

This is really bad and upsetting and everything. But I'm not gonna lie.. I laughed.

Mostly about this: "I did it to see if it would fly".
That's something a three year old would say, just like kicking a bird is something a three year old would do.

I do think the other team is also to blame because they should have been more responsible for the owl. It should never have gone on the field in the first place, y'know?

I'm outraged and disgusted, there's no other words to describe how I feel after watching that video and there's "no animal cruelty law" who the fuck runs this country, I'm against all kinds of cruelty too animals, and that was just unescessary, all it would for took was a person too pick up the defenceless animal and take it too a vet, but because he's a football who like most other pricks that can kick a ball and get $$$ for it, thinks he can do what the fuck he want's. Fucking ridiculous :rage:

Thankfully the owl is recovering with no serious damage.

^^
??? I heard the owl died? Unless there was another soccer player who flipped an owl off the field?

But really, I doubt the guy was actually trying to harm the animal rather than flip it off the field. I played a bit of soccer in highschool and that hardly looks like a real kick, more like a finesse you'd do to shimmy the ball (or owl) off the field. I'm not condoning the behavior, but I think people are being a bit too hard on the guy. Plus there are a lot of cultures out there that don't put a great emphasis on 'animal rights' like the US. Different culture leads to different standards. And jailtime? Really? But he shouldn't have given that liner about helping the owl wake up and fly or what not. That just makes it even worse.

And really, animal cruelty goes on behind the scenes in a lot of places, but it's pretty big problem that people don't really think about day to day since it's not happening in front of their eyes. Then you put something like this on youtube and suddenly people get inflamed. Give it a few days and it'll die down, and people will just go back to living the way they did without doing anything about the real travesty of animal cruelty. Stuff like that makes me giggle a bit inside. Just a funny observation.

Wow this really upset me and what made it worse was when he said he wasn't trying to hurt it, he just wanted to see if it would fly.... what a blatant lie!!!
Does he take his fans for fools??? You don't KICK A BIRD to see if it will fly!! You pick it up, hold it to the sky or even just walk up to a bird and they'd fly if they could!

What a disgusting pig!!

I am outraged by this guy. Poor little Owl, I am so glad it will recover but I bet it will be scared for life and even more weary of humans (but maybe being weary of us is now a good thing for the poor owl!)

As an update, the owl died. That was just outrageous. I'm totally against anything or any action that harms animals or any form of wildlife (in non-threatening situations, of course) and seeing this guy just mindlessly kick the owl was just stupid and hateful. I hope he feels better now that the poor owl will never fly again.

i'm guessing what he meant by "i did it to see if it would fly" was he assuming it would fly away because it was under threat. i doubt he kicked it to see if that would make it get up and fly away.

You know, it's ironic.

Really, if an animal would attack a human, then it'd be most likely that they'd be put down. In recent years, pitbull dogs have been a prime example of this. But it doesn't work vice versa.

It's sad to hear that the owl died. There really needs to be a law forbidding animal abuse like this. He kicked it like a football. Why couldn't he have tapped it a little like you do when you want a pigeon to get away from you?

Looks like the footballer's going to have to live with this for the rest of his life.

I can't really say anything that anyone hasn't already said, but I agree its completely disgusting behavior. It's sad to hear that the owl died, I just hope he gets a decent punishment but by the sounds of things, he wont. How anyone can kick an already injured animal like that is beyond me.

I saw the video last night on my friend's facebook profile, and I couldn't have been madder at that guy. Who in the right mind has the nerve to harm an animal for the most stupid reason, and in public too (obviously that guy)? The owl is an animal I find the most interesting out of all other wild animals, and you'd think that the player could have just picked it up and carried it over to where it was safe, and maybe watch to see if it would fly.
But no. You had to kill it. I hope he gets castrated .

Ya'll probably already know my stance on animal abuse, due to over the years advocating how much it consistently angers me. I really never advocate "eye for an eye" unless it has to do with animal abuse.

In short I feel more for animals sometimes than I do my fellow man due to being a bit jaded over the years. In this case, I would want the fella strapped to the ground and have his head kicked as well. I'm no fan of PETA, but in this case I would love to see what they would do to him.

Exactly...they would just say because we can..we humans think we can do whatever we want and why? because we humans can.. Give them a finger and they take the whole freeking hand...I have more respect for animals than for humans..

People kill wales etc...seals for commercial reasons..panda's, tigers name them all...

Ive seen videos waters near the shore was red of blood..
Ive seen videos of animals being skinned ALIVE.
Seals being battered: :ffs:

These people need to be punished... but tbh I never really take action to help animals or something.. I should do voluntary work etc, but I think it wont make any difference anyway..this will never change as long humankind exists..

Congrats to the Steve Erwin ship btw, the sea shepherds stopped Japan from reaching their quotum of whale killing..

weeeeelll

if it was flying in the first place and he was really attempting to shoo it away, shit happens.

It really is a shame, and what's even worse is that this kind of stuff goes on every single day :sad3: That's why I don't eat meat anymore too, or use leather products if I can help it, and I think a lot more people wouldn't if they saw what actually happens to the animals and how they're killed. Such as the millions of male baby chicks who get thrown alive into meat grinders just because the companies don't "need" them, I haven't watched the videos but I did make a petition somewhere about it. And the animals that get skinned alive for fur coats and leather etc. There's wild animal, livestock, and pet abuse that goes on all the time just because people think "Oh, we're human and we should do it just because we can :ffs:"

It's sickening that the owl had to die here, but maybe this will at least bring some bigger attention to the need in Colombia for better animal rights laws. If it had been some teenage kid who was playing soccer in a field with his friends, no one would ever have heard about it. And because it's a celebrity, he will have to suffer the scorn of more people than if he was just some kid or something, so at least he can be embarrassed in front of more people this way.

And (on a side note) I do think if an individual person has the mindset to do volunteer work though, then it can certainly make at least a little difference. It is better to be able to say you tried than just let animal abusers walk all over everyone and everything all smug like they own the place. And even though PETA sucks, there are tons of other groups out there that do good work--Defenders of Wildlife, Audobon Society, Earthjustice, Center for Biological Diversity, Sierra Club, The Wilderness Society, Ocean Conservancy, Rainforest Action Network, Marine Mammal Center, Friends of the Earth, etc. I get enewsletters from all kinds of groups like this, and they're constantly making free petitions and doing other things to try to make a difference. So if you think about all the little things that small groups of people can do, it really does add up.

Fair enough if he gave it a nudge to try and see if would move off the field but he fucking kicked it!

What sick person does that to an animal that is clearly injured!

I hope someone fucking tries to kick him when he's been knocked down one day and that they use the same pathetic excuse he just gave here.

What a jerk.
