Yeah, you have to remake your own tag; not someone elses.
how recent can this remake be? and how drastic the changes?

I'd say anything from... 2/3 months ago to the very start.
As for changes, I'd say they don't have to be totally drastic, but, noticeable.

Pick a really old sig with a good stock and you cant go wrong at all. Though im not sure whether il vote for the most improved or the best? They go hand in hand really i spose.
I THINK I might have one that old.... not too sure.... this WILL be a repeated them, aye?
It definitely does go hand in hand...though I might not have caught something: will the old tag be present in the SoTW voting thread as well? Don't understand how you could even vote for most improved unless you're familiar with the piece or are given it in the thread.
I would highly suggest that the old be paired up with the new and improved so that the voters(us) can use it to cast our votes. It's pretty much going to have to be like that. 
Thing is aswell. Is that a tag thats remade pretty much has to be using the same effects and style of the previous or its not a remake. Its a new sig using a stock youv used before. Totally different.

Most of the signatures that were old have been deleted, the recent ones I've made I can't be fucked to remake to be honest. I don't even remember what resources I used anymore. So eh... Passing on.

Not really. I've had two entries so far. One has remade the tag with the same dimensions, someone has changed the dimensions. So, it's up to you.
I honestly thought entry number 5 in this weeks voting thread(the emotions one) of SOTW was lew
