Lightning Returns *SPOILERS* thread

The ending is hilariously
Lightning-centric for a conclusion to the whole damn trilogy. Yup, let's not bother even really mentioning one of the other characters and just feature Lightning, because otherwise, she's the only one who seems to matter or whatever.

God, nearly everything about Lightning has been so forced in these games. There's nothing organic about her, and the writers don't even know for themselves what her actual character is. If she's not a walking archetype, she's stuffed into some overly silly plot point about her
child side or whatever,
in an attempt to give her substance. At the last minute.

Writers, this is not how you write characters, let alone flaunt them as something divinely magnificent, envisaged by a mind clearly otherworldly to your own puny ones.

do i hate LR? not even in the slightest...but i do hate that they wasted their time on it when we could've had better games.

Not really? What else could they conceivably make to be a cheap, quick interim flagship title as the company was still finalising the enormous FFXIV revamp that cost most of the company's manpower, resources and money?

LR is a consequence of a much bigger, multilevel fuck-up from this company this generation, not the cause of something. It's just the fact that a whole trilogy of FFXIII games was not the panacea we needed, and looking at first week Japanese sales, they seem to agree too.

look at where we are Cookie. call it what you want, but someone else came in complaining about the moaning and didn't even bother to read the ending.

I played XIII, hated it (and for the record, i could never surpass chapter 11 from that game cuz it just got so mind numbing. my friend

. I gave XIII-2 a chance and beat the whole thing. didn't hate it as much but hate it on a different level and for different reasons. and LR XIII was something that was just an excuse.

So really, it would be bias of me to hate something and never give it a chance. me? i gave up on it. do i hate LR? not even in the slightest...but i do hate that they wasted their time on it when we could've had better games.

Trust me, its not about cup of tea. i just have standards. i'm not a fangirl. i dont jump on band wagons, i dont get excited.

And? Just because you aren't excited for this particular game from this series doesn't mean you should call people out for looking forward to it.

You may have standards, yes, but that doesn't mean every single person holds the same standards or preferences as you. You think this is a bad series. Hell, I think this is a bad series But obviously, other people don't.

they just enjoyed the prior games and wish to continue playing said series.

Also, if you looked at the said members post, you'll realise that they didn't actually mention how great LR WILL be, but infact that they wish to give the game a play before ragging on it. They're going into the game blind because- Amazingly- they don't want to spoil a game they have an interest in playing.

Obviously, you shouldn't change your opinion at all. I know I won't.

But forcing your opinion on others just because they happened to like the game(Or vice versa) is kinda silly and unecessary

Well that's what I think anyway.

opinions aren't forced, thats what over sensitive forum members don't get. they are simply "opinions"> but also considered.

just shut it. ok, look at the situation.

you're looking for an excuse to rag on me. but look at the situation. we're in a SPOILERS thread. and someone is complaining about other moaning, and he didn't even see the ending. So what gives you the idiocy to get mad at me over something that deserves to be said.

we're in a spoiler thread. people complaining about it? don't complain about them complaining about it ESPECIALLY if you haven't seen the ending. that was what was the point.

don't bother me, cookie. its a forum, get over yourself.

No one is out to get you. I'm certainly not out to rag on you. I disagreed on something you posted. It's nothing personal.

All I'm saying is that you're calling someone out for bias because they express a positive interest in a game you view in a negative light and defended said game in a thread. I see a no notice where in you have to read or look at the ending before posting here. It's a discussion thread, so you're going to hear both sides.

I'm certainly not getting mad. It's a game series. It's not worth getting angry about. I'm simply replying to what you posted.

Let's dial it down a couple notches. Everybody is entitled to their opinion and expressing it. We can discuss without going into attack mode.

Don't even lie.

I"m not "ragging' on him, because he enjoys the game, i'm telling him he can't complain about other people complaining about the ending if he hasn't even seen it. He likes the game for its gameplay. good for him, i'm not telling him it sucks. i'm simply stating that people here have the right to B!tch about the ending.

thats all. so why don't you grow a brain, and drop it. (and i'm telling you to grow a brain, because for the past 3 comments, i clarified what the issue, and you insisted it was something else. so STFU about sarcastic "people out to get me" i know how forums work. i know when people aren't talking about one comment and just want to rag about what their saying.)

Back on topic,
Fleur, the game began with Bunivelze returning and bringing back Lightning and giving her a new ability thats directly related to clothing. So its bound to have such an ending.

It really is such a shame that FF13 forces such high-regard to Lightning rather than her persona. but its kind of like loving Snookie. Famous for a show that not everyone loved, and she makes her own spin off in which never truly explains the talent that got her there in the first place.

Lightning is that person. but i find it some marketing ploy. they spread out lightning so much as that newcomers can think Lightning is a great character and join the bandwagon and because they used tht so they dont have to throw away all the work they did in XIII.

Personally, i'm glad its over, the ending was horrible, but at least i can smile and say "thank god thats over"

it the best ending the game could of have in like ever because of ONE REASON ONLY

AT LEAST NO MORE XIII GAMES

I got to admit 'blows own horn' CALLED LUMINA

Sooo, I saw the ending and epilogue. I wouldn't call it fantabulous, but perhaps the journey to the ending is more worthwhile than the ending itself? xD

I mean, really? France? wth Square Enix? We pay to play RPGs to ESCAPE from reality, not be reminded of it. I actually preferred the Grand Pulse and Cocoon worlds.

...I might be one of those crazy people that's willing to pay for a DLC with Snow and Serah's wedding. Just sayin'. Even though I hate Snow's guts. :rage:

The fanfiction part of me can imagine Noel totally interrupting the vows... xD

but since he gets Yeul in the end, I'm not so sure my little fantasy would pan out anyhow. :sad3:

I got to admit 'blows own horn' CALLED LUMINA

Can't have one Lightning Waifu, that's not enough, got to have two. :hal:

I'm surprised that Snow that doesn't symbolize her masculine side, that Hope didn't symbolize her un-confident side, Serah symbolizes her secret desire to be more feminine or something, and Fang and Vanille symbolize her lesbian urges.

Guess that's been saved for Lightning Returns 2 : Caius strikes back
:jeri:

[Spoilers] Lumina

Grabbed this from the FF Wikia, regarding Lumina's origins.

When their parents died, Lightning abandoned her past and became strong for Serah under the delusion that she doesn't need help. Regardless, the denied feelings of wanting companionship and needing help from others causes an inner turmoil that affected Lightning throughout her life. When he finds Lightning, Bhunivelze purges her of her vulnerable side, which used the Chaos to manifest a physical form: Lumina. As she was a part of Lightning, Lumina also became a vessel for Serah's soul to safeguard her from the Chaos.

I, personally, find it a convoluted excuse to add to Lightning's saga. The character is beyond unnecessary. Lightning already has enough on her plate that already prompts her to "move forward."

What do you all think?

i think it was unnecessary. but one of those developers try to do, advertise a new character and suddenly find out their not so new.

honestly, i never cared for her, i think we all knew she was going to be related in a such a way that doesn't really make us care for her.

I find the concept interesting from a psychological perspective of identity development. However, I also find it a bit shallow and unnecessary, and it definitely seems like a failed attempt to deepen/strengthen Lightning's character.

I think I'll like Lumina's character in general, and it may be fun to read in between the lines if she keeps her true "identity" a secret for some time.

I would've preferred that Lumina served as the chaos vessel whatever-the-hell for Serah though, since they bear more of a physical resemblance and I just don't see Lightning as harboring any deep repressed emotions. But this is Lightning's game, sooo... xD

Hi there!

I just beat the game yesterday. Here is my take:

- First, it will take a few days to get used to as there are some drastic differences from 13 and 13-2. Once you get used to it though, the battle system is very well made and exciting.
- The main complaint most here in Japan had at first was being confined to a "timed game". This too takes a few days but when you learn to manage your time properly and use the time stop skill, its not a problem at all.
- LOVED the ending. I see some people talking about Lumina above, but I thought the character was intriguing. Never knew which side she was playing for until her true identity is revealed at the VERY end.
- Overall, great game. I unlocked hard mode so trying that next. Also, after you beat the game, you unlock the feature to upgrade weapons. Adds lots of replay value as you get to also keep all of your items from the first go (as long as you select "start strong" or whatever they call it in English.

Thumbs up from me. Off to start hard mode!

I know I'm in the minority here when I say I enjoyed Lightning Returns and FFXIII as a whole but since this is the FFXIII section it only make sense for me to put my opinion in the thread.

I beat Lightning Returns 2 nights ago and personalty felt fully satisfied. I didn't mind the story all that much and yes, I agree at times, it can be rather confusing to follow. I got the gist of the story and I didn't mind that Lumina was really the child version of Lightning. Lightning has always had that side to her of not being very emotional so it was nice even for a glimpse to see her cry out in a sense of what she lost. Was it necessary for the FFXIII series to have 3 games? I dunno, it was not my choice to make. Did I enjoy they made 3 games for me to play and that Lightning had a conclusive ending? Yes.

When this series and story first started all I wanted was resolution for Lightning. For her to find her sister, and have inner peace, and not have to fight anymore. At the end of Lightning Returns she achieved both goals and for me it was nice to see her smiling at the end of the credits when she got off the train. No more fighting, no more sadness, and she can live a normal life now.

I feel very much the same way about this series. Many didn't like it, but that's fine. I loved following Lighting and her story.

I walked into a bar recently, and saw Toriyama staggering out. He left some cryptic messages scrawled on a beer-soaked napkin. Here's what I was able to decipher. No guarantee on validity, but here goes...

It's an outline for the next installment, entitled "Lightning Strikes Again!"

We leave off where the last installment ended. Lightning hops the next train for Paris, looking for a new adventure. When she gets off the train, she is accosted by a poor, sickly hooker named Fantine. Fantine begs Lightning to save her daughter, Serah, who has been Taken(TM) by thugs who plan to sell her into sexual slavery. Lightning realizes this Serah is actually her sister, and of course, promises to save her. Fantine promptly keels over, and Lightning collects her soul... and the meager gil in her pockets.

Lightning steals an old Citroen 2CV and sets out in search of Serah. The Citroen starts making really weird noises (more than a normal Citroen), and she gets out to check under the hood. Just in time, because the Citroen Transforms(TM) into the metal god, Boney Ballz. Light has no weapon, and decides to make a run for it. Boney Ballz Transforms(TM) back into a car, and attempt to run her down. Fortunately, it's a 2CV, and Light can easily outrun it. Boney Ballz hits the rev limiter in frustration, throws a rod, dumps all his oil on the pavement, and dies.

Light keeps moving. She must find a mode of transportation. Ah, ha! She spots the Wildlands and jumps the turn stile. There are many wild beasts, and... there! Her beloved white chocobo! Light hops on the back of the chocobo, and it dumps her on the ground, then kicks her repeatedly in the head. Turns out it was an ostrich in the Paris Zoo.

When Light regains consciousness, she stumbles around Paris in a daze, and takes refuge in the Louvre. She smashes a display case and steals a sword. She uses the sword to pulverize a series of gods. She realizes too late that they are actually priceless sculptures, several thousand years old.

Lightning high tails it out of the Louvre, and sees... the cathedral of Luxerion! Or Notre Dame. Whatever. As she hoped, she finds Vanille in the cathedral, sitting on Father Green's lap. Note: that's Pere Vert in French. Vanille mumbles something about finding snow at the palace.

Of course! Snow will know how to find Serah! But how to get into the palace?

As Light runs down the steps of Notre Dame, she nearly knocks over a stroller at the bottom. A blonde toddler sits in the stroller -- why, it's Hope Estheim! Lightining attempts to question him, but he just squeezes a Mog-shaped toy that squeaks and squeaks.

Light wanders the streets and finds a man wearing a Guy Falkes mask. He gives her 10 kilos of C4. Lightning places the C4 at the base of the Eiffel Tower and sets it off -- a perfect explosion! The tower falls directly toward the Versailles Palace... but falls far short. Oops. Slight miscalculation.

Lightning walks to Versailles and enters through the main gate, like everyone else. She wanders about, asking people how she can find Snow. A shady character whispers that he can deliver snow to her. She follows him, and he injects her with a speedball of cocaine and heroin.

When Lightning wakes up, she is handcuffed, and part of a slave auction, along with Vanille and... Serah! To Lightning's great relief, Fang shows up as a buyer. Fang bids and wins Vanille and Serah. Then she says, "Sorry, Light! I ran out of gil, plus, you're really not my type". Fang files out with Vanille and Serah in tow.

Lightning is purchased by a mysterious sheik, then drugged again. When she wakes up, she is chained to a bed in a small room. The view out the window is reminiscent of the Dead Dunes.

The door opens, and the mysterious sheik enters, head lowered and hooded. He raises his head slightly, and Lightning can see his eyes.

"Sahz?!" she gasps.

End of Installment 4.
