One of Square Enix’s goals is to strengthen their long list of intellectual properties. The publisher mentioned this during an investor’s presentation with a vague list of franchise names. This quarter’s financial results presentation has more information than colorful circles.

Square Enix has a two pronged strategy. First, they want to strengthen existing IPs with reboots. As examples, Square Enix listed Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Front Mission Evolved, The 3rd Birthday, Deus Ex, and Dungeon Siege in this group.

Additionally, Square Enix wants to continue to build new brands. Nier, Mindjack, and Gun Loco were in this group. "Starting up new IPs has been extremely difficult," Yoichi Wada, CEO of Square Enix, commented.

I wonder how much this will affect the FF IP...as I never played any other game they released since those dont appeal to me in the slightest way. Except Front Mission (which I played years ago) but the reboot has bad bad reviews and doesnt look right. If they sticked to 2D with Front Mission even then I would 'buy it and think it would be better.

Bad move, SE...I suggest just working on a new IP, and use innovative features to get people to enjoy the game and thus make money.

But I have a D in Economics in High School so, yeah...

I raised my hopes a little when I saw Nier up there, and then what followed it crushed my hopes for anything even remotely resembling improvement. All this is really saying is that SE are sick of making crap FF games and are going to take a break from it to destroy their other IPs...fantastic idea, SE. Positively spiffing.

The only reason new IPs are so hard to start up is because they've fallen below standard. Whilst people are willing to overlook this in recognisable brands like FF, they'll bash things they don't recognise to no end. Starting up new IPs wouldn't be so difficult if they actually had any good ideas and put some effort into it.

I actually dont want them to mess with NIER anymore. The back story is amazing, and the game's story itself was completely amazing. The company that made the game was absorbed into their parent company AND the director of the Cavia left. I think it ended nicely.

SE needs to get their act together though. They need to focus on making game engines that can be used on more than one game though tweaked for each one and upgraded. That way development time would go way down and costs would too.

Square's PSP games have been top notch though, I definitely give them that. Last gen and the gen before SE was my favorite developer who always delivered for the most part. Now their handheld games have been the best. Nier was great but their other PS3 games I have not been too impressed with (though I havent played Star Ocean 4 yet)

What's the deal with people rebooting their series? It started with movies and now it's shifting over to video game franchises. It's becoming an freaking plague! And I highly doubt rebooting a game series is going to make it better when you have yet to clean up your act. Jesus.

yeah hate all the rebooting too. They should just make something else new instead.

If they need/should reboot anything, I think there's a certain 23 year old series that could use a reboot in it's main game.

Reboots? Jeez, SE just keeps losing any kind of hope I put into them at this point. Holy fuck, that's going to suck more balls than FFXIII. :ffs:

Final Fantasy? I'm not sure how you can reboot something that never acted like a chronicles in the first place. (As in each game is actually a sequel to the same story from the original) Each FF game is it own story and the title is more of a brand name really. The only thing a reboot would do is reset the numbers.
