best party without a fighter would definately involve a red mage somewhere in your party along with a white mage; although i would say that the white mage is the only mandatory character. as long as u have a descent healer and a tank u can survive without a fighter.
Red Mage can act as a healing character and take the primary single target damage and healer until you get to a later point when you can upgrade into red wizard, becoming the primary healer only. The two black mages will be able to dish out serious punishment with mutli-target damage until you get the the boss. Thief will be borderline useless until you can upgrade it into ninja, but once you do you can put on all the black magic that involves status, use it to cast haste and to inflict negative status on the enemy, thus reserving your spell casting black mages for damage. The damage the Black Mages can achieve is unmatched.
The red mage can be swapped out with a White Mage or Thief. Removing the red mage will draw out battle durations much more early game but late game will be much less useful as heal items and the red mages ability with cure skills will be able to replace the white mage with time. Removing the thief will provide early game simplicity, allowing you to survive better, however late game the thief when turned ninja will provide serious pain and status advantages, making boss battles much faster and reducing the necessity for the white mage.
