So...when I first started playing Final Fantasy, I was pretty young. The characters were always older than I was when I first started playing. So through the years, as the games came out, I realized...uhm...something's different.
All of a sudden I'm older than the characters in most of the games that I've played! =S
I always think it's more fun when the characters are older than I am. In fact, I especially enjoyed FFVII because it doesn't have like an all teenage cast.

You? =]

I know what you mean. I always feel so old when the characters in the game I'm playing are younger than me! It kind of makes me feel bad about myself. It's like, damn here are these younger people who saving the world...and I'm just sitting on my lazy ass ;P

I like to look up to my fellow FF heroes, but now it's like I'm...peering down at them. :'(

I can't fantasize about Zidane anymore, because it's kind of like...V-rape. :'(

Yes, I know what you mean. It's awkward playing FFIX and the main characters are 16. I'm 20....soon I will be Cloud's age!

You need to think about it this way....The PSX games came out in the late 90s...Soo in 1997 when FFVII was released Cloud was 21 in the game.... It's 2007 now so Cloud is 31! XD

As well for Zidane, the game came out in 2000. So....Zidane right now is 23! Right!? ;___;

LOL. Yeah, nothing like fantasizing and committing statutory rape. I sorta know what you mean. It's like, "oh wow, that character is hot........and 4 years younger than me." Heh.

I never had the chance to play them when I was younger then the average characters. My first FF was VIII and I was 18 when the game came out. I didn't play FFVII until I was 21; so again, I was always pretty much that same age as most of the characters.

Today though, I feel my age when I play them. Lol, I’m always thankful of characters that are at least 20 or above - no longer a teenager (no offense to the teenagers here).

Lol... I’ve used that justification before... Quistis was 18 in 1999 when the game came out, making her about 26 today and so on with the rest...

Haha. Well, in VIII they were all, what, 18 or 19? Hrmm...?

Oh well, I know that in XII, Basch and Fran are pretty old.

Fantasize about Vossler. It'll be awhile before you surpass his age. :monster:

And I do agree. I liked how FFVII didn't have an all teenage cast. I'm okay if there are some teenagers but I prefer a more diverse cast with at least 'some' adults. I can usually identify with the older characters more.

The Genomes had a limited life span, just like the Black Mages so by now he might very well have expired.

I've never actually thought about the age difference. I've been playing FF for over ten years now. It's stranger how the characters seem to be getting younger now though...

I don't really know what it feels like to have characters under your age. Since im only 15 the nearest to me is rikku.

I like my characters to be veterans not teenage hot heads. Its more realistic that way.

I often find I dislike playing games and reading books about characters younger than me, for some reason. I think that, as I get older, I see the people their age around school. The people at school are kids, and don't seem nearly as sophisticated as the character in the story.

Actually, Rikku is 17 now due to X-2. =). I think Yuna is around there too. haha. Not entirely sure. >_<;;

I never really notice the age differences. I guess because I am still young and around the same age as they are.

I understand very well that these characters are not real, so their age doesn't bother me quite as much. Then again, I'm still a teenager myself. I remember playing Kingdom Hearts. This was my first game from Square and I was only 11-12 at that time. I anticipated the game since I was 10... It also sparked me to play games more. But now that KH2 has come around, I am now older than Sora which saddens me a little.

A game just allows us to embody the characters awhile, I can see why if we can relate less with them because of their age and maybe maturity, that changes the gaming experience.

I think if Square is making younger characters, it lets kids of another age group to play the games as well and enjoy it and not feel left out.

Since FFs can be more sophisticated than say KH, a young kid can enjoy either game and so could an older person. The younger may enjoy KH more with a simpler storyline, but as they grow more mature and play their FFs again like I did, I begin to appreciate the stories that are more complicated. As for an older player, I know some 20 year olds can enjoy Kingdom Hearts just as much as any other FF game with older characters, if not more.

I was actually thinking about this a few months ago when I started playing FFVIII again for a bit. I was only 13 when I first played the game, so naturally, I loved the fact that the characters were older than me because it is more appealing as far as storyline goes.

But when I played again for a little bit, I was suddenly two - three years older than them, and that was a bit weird. =/ I guess the appeal wasn't really there anymore...and I did feel a little bored because I'm used to having my characters older than me. However, I still love the game as ever. It's just that the age difference kinda got to me a little, I guess...

I forgot that. I honestly don't remember, it's been a couple of yeara since I played through IX.

With Final Fantasy VIII it feels a little odd playing it knowing that I am 2-3 years older than the characters. The main characters of FFVIII don't look very teenage too me. They look more in their early 20s.

Thats why I loved 8 when I first played it. I was myself a teen and was up to X2's release. I loved the fact I was roguhly the same age or younger then the cast. But now that Im in my 20s and the cast is getting alittle olderish its odd.

Wow, this is an interesting topic. I must say that I really don't mind my characters to be younger than I am. It's all about their personalities and how they develop. I'm playing through FFVIII for the first time, and even though I like the game, I feel that the character's personalities are a little bland. So, it's not really an age thing. When I played FFX I was older than Yuna, she was 17 and I was 20 (no too long ago I must admit), yet I could still relate to her because she had personality traits that made her appealing. So, IMO, age is just really a minor thing in the grand scheme of things.

About the Zidane thing, I thought he was going to live quite a bit longer than the average Genome because he was given a soul while the other weren't =o (Or am I just way off on this one?)

And I can't say I really mind the characters being younger than me really. The first FF I played was VII when it came out in '97. I was only 11 years old, and while I did finish the game, it was mostly because I had to go step by step with the guidebook and I really didn't understand everything that was going on in the story line ^^;

But now I've been playing the games for 10 years now, and while it does bother me somewhat sometimes to know that I'm now as old as some of the characters that I used to think, "Wow, is that what it's like when you're older? So mature and junk?" It doesn't matter a whole much really, especially cause they're not real :(

except for Vincent, i keep him under my bed for safe keeping

I was young when I played FFs

4-5 years old...

Since I was young, I ony played for the fun of it.
