Altan’s eyes glazed over in thought. The motions of his options wavered as he tried to come to a decision, yet only landed at an impasse. His fingertips absentmindedly brushed against several different items until one of them pulsed slightly beneath his touch. He retracted naturally, and as he flinched he felt the power dissipate from the broach.

“Oh, that one there’s special.” The gruff salesman picked up The Ruby from the stand, and had a glance through its glassy features. “Legend says that a terrifying monster is ‘sposed to be free from this gem. A large green monster with a big red dote on its here’ head. But no one could e’er figer it out.”

Alten reflected on the man’s tale for a moment, before he took the gem from his hand. For a brief moment, he caught a glimpse of a furry creature with a mischievous grin upon its face. He heard tall tales about the Summons of the past, and how Princess Garnet, among one of her companions could summon these creatures. Altan figured them for old wives’ tales, or bed time stories that folks would tell their children so as not to stay out too late at night, or the terrifying Bahamut would come and gobble them up. This often kept the children in check.

Hesitating for a moment, Altan queried the salesman, “How much?”

“Oh, prob’ly too rich for yer blood.” The man took the summoning crystal and polished it against his raggedy vest before placing it back down on the table.

Now Altan was no Summoner, as most of them were thought to be extinct now; however outside Alexandria, a Summoning Crystal could fetch a high price in a market place, perhaps like in Burmecia. So Altan stood his ground and continued to haggle with the salesman over the precious gem.
