The "Buy and Never Beat" Syndrome

I have a couple of games that I went out to buy and just never completed them. A few of them I've only played once! It's mostly because I can get bored of a game easily if it doesn't make much sense to me, though that usually motivates me to buy a new game.

I'm terrible for this, when I was younger and I only got new games at Christmas or Birthdays then I had a whole year almost to get into it and complete it. Then when I started getting an income I would go out and buy 3/4 games a week and had at one point on my Gamecube 30 games and when I sold them I had only completed maybe 8 of them.

I'm just not someone who can complete games over a period of a few months in short bursts, I tend to find I can only complete games when I concentrate on only the one title. One of the reasons why I've not really bought a 360, Wii or PS3 is so I can go through my backlog of SNES, DC, PC, GBA and DS games and get them out of the way.

I have a big problem with this. There is so many games i have never beaten that i want to but just end up playing a new game. Just a few of the games i have started, but still have never beaten:
FF VII
FF VIII
FF VIX
FF X
FF X-2
FFXII
Wild Arms
I love them all but i just havnt beaten them yet, i know i need to beat them but i will just go out and by a brand new game before i finish the one i was playing and end up never finishing the one i started. I just got Dragon Quest VIII tonight so that will most likely be another game on this list.

I often buy games and then once I've bought another, I'm so excited about it that I stick that one in and forget about continuing on with the previous game. =/

This last week I've been pretty bad.

I bought FFXIII for the PS3 and was playing that every day for a few weeks and then I went out and bought a lot more games and now I'm stuck flicking between games. >.<

It does get frustrating!

XIV? Surely you mean IX? :hmmm:

I have that problem only when I become disillutioned with the game I'm playing. Like Far Cry 2, ok game but there's an enemy around every corner and the gameplay is essentially a long trek from one side of the map to the other duking it out with hordes of foes.

Or Mass Effect :ffs: with a game so huge you're going to have to take a strong likeness to the game to play through the entire thing.

Seriously, there's probably over 80 games which I haven't completed. I'm always looking at new games and thinking "Wow I should try that." I try it and I never complete it. I brought Clock Tower 3 the other day, played it, then I decided to buy Haunting Ground and I was playing that, now I'm playing Alone in the Dark. >.<;

I'm sorta like that, except I won't buy a new game, I'll just start over on the current game. I don't know why I do it, but I have a habit of doing it and I get bitched at alot.

I don't usually have this problem; however I often have several games on the go at once, and if I get really involved in one, I'll favour it over the others...and then I'll get another new game, and I'll favour that one over the others, and they kinda just fade into obscurity...I usually end up selling them again without ever finishing them.

As for finishing games 100%...that isn't something I do very often, I get bored, and other things come out. Still, I usually make a point of completing the main story at the very least.

I seem to suffer this syndrome quite a bit actually. I do have a reasonably sized library of games that I have just left to collect dust without having actually beat them. It tends to happen with the longer games, predominantly RPGs. I tend to have a short span of interest in one particular game. Once I've scratched beyond the surface, my interest in it quickly wanes until I can't be bothered anymore to continue. And then I go buy another game.

It's happening now with FFXIII. All that combat I need to get my Crystarium going anywhere - I am kind of losing interest now. I aspire to keep going though, otherwise FFXIII will end up like my Revenant Wings, Elder Scrolls III and IV, Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Rogue Galaxy, Secret of Mana, Ninja Gaiden Sigma etc.

I have a slight variant on the Buy and Never Beat Syndrome. I find that if I go any longer than say, 2 or 3 weeks without playing a game, I feel like I have to start again because I have "lost my thread" so to speak. These days though I try my best to finish what I start, because at 22 years old it sucks that I have only finished 6 out of 13 Final Fantasy games.

Another thing I sometimes do, is when playing a new release, I stop playing if I feel like I am anywhere near the end within say, a week of buying it. I think I do this because subconciously I want to savour it. What then happens is I do exactly what I've just mentioned above, and then I have to start again. The last example of this was Metal Gear Solid 4. I got to chapter 5 and decided to take "a quick break", and play some of my other PS3 games (seeing as though I bought my PS3 right around that time).

Unfortunately I suffer from this alot myself. I've been trying to finish my games though however when there are some new games that I am really interested in coming out it is hard for me to look the other way and not buy it. However I have been doing a bit better with this in the method of just not starting a new game until I finish one of the one's I've been working on. Some exceptions do apply though of course. However this also means I have quite a few games I haven't even touched yet.

To an extent I do this... I tend to go through and complete a game that I am really interested in, and if I have a lot of time (such as giving myself a week off from everything at christmas) I do this within a week or so. If not then I play whenever I can on a weeknight and try to complete a game.

However I do tend to juggle many games on the go these days. I can never stay on one game for very long (unless it has good online play, and people I know to play it with), and therefore I guess you could say that I might play a lot of games, but I am slowly beating them all... It takes me a long time to beat them, but if I keep playing them a little bit here and there then I will beat them eventually.

That said, for games I am most interested in I tend to want to beat them within a short period of time as I'd rather get the full experience of the story without forgetting parts. In games that the story doesn't matter so much, or it is a simple story and easy to pick up, or if I find the game enjoyable but not mindblowing, then I tend to beat it slowly.

I do this all the time. I don't have a lot of time for video games nowdays, but I keep buying more because they are oh so pretty and interesting and look really nice all lined up on my shelf and they're starting to pile up. I still haven't finished Dissidia or Halo Wars, and I've got Blue Dragon, Left 4 Dead, Oblivion, Valkyrie Profile, and a ton of others sitting around that I've barely even started on. D:

Oh, and I've had FFV and VI sitting around for years and I haven't even touched them yet. >_>

I seem to have this problem only when I become distracted or sidetracked with other things. Like right now, I started FFXIII, but because I have work and plus friends that I talk to everyday and college, I got pretty sidetracked and lazy xD. I kind of lost interest, but I will try to play it more. Sometimes, I will favor a game, like when I played FFVIII, I had a lot of time on my hands and would play it non stop =P

Hmmm, Ion't think I have a huge problem on this 'syndrome' because every game I've gotten I like and so, there's no reason for me to get distracted and whatnot that's keeping from playing the actual game. >_> -thinks about that- :hmmm: I might be lying though, i'm not sure. xD There might be a game somewhere that i have yet to complete.

Omg, I'm a HUGE game procrastinator :ness:

Usually I get stuck in a game play through and play something easier, or I buy a new game and forget about the one I was playing Dx

Or I buy games that I've spent a long time trying to find and get that, and just don't play it right away. Money is definitely a big reason why I have so many unplayed games >_<

When I compile a list of games I own, I get all proud in a nerdy way, but then I realize a crap load of the games I have, I never even beat yet :ness:

I suffer horribly with this syndrome...The games I buy are always part of a series and they always have spinoffs....So natterally I must have the whole series myself.
Every now and again I like a fun easy kiddy game like dark cloud or radiata stories...downside radiata stories was related to Star ocean in a referance so I bought the last hope...and every other game of star ocean and yet to beat even one, because I get detored by a new game, or play the rest.
Every game I buy has others related so I just buy them all,my ode to familly history of hording=p,to hopefully play at a later date. I swear 50% of the games I have are still unopend
My goal is to finish most of them by the end of the year....I doubt that will happen though

I'm all over this... I have and started almost all the FF's in the main series, and only have beaten VII, X and X-2... I've got the Xenosaga series, unbeaten, Star Ocean's 3/4, unbeaten... Eternal Sonata, Fatal Frame 3, Kingdom Hearts, Unlimited Saga, God of War, Magna Carta... lesigh...

YES. Majorly.

Heroes of Mana - lost, played it for two hours before it sucked
Lunar Genesis - destroyed, but looked annoying tedious
Sonic Heroes - Although I did beat the easiest story, never beat the whole game
Shadow the Hedgehog - Ditto, was too long

And that's about 1/3 of my collection, so I epically fail xD
