Alright folks, sound off: Is purple a "girl" color? Why, why not?

I never thought of it as a "girl" color. It's always been the color of royalty for me, baby!

What do you guys think?

:wacky:

Err.. Purple to me, when I look at it is very feminine, as it is kind of a shade of pink (I think? It looks pinkish to me) In fact I feel that purple is almost more girly than pink.

I also associate it with royalty but not so much.

It's also a really shit colour.

That is really all I have to say on this.

I said 'I think' as I was not sure (and was clearly wrong). I know nothing about colours :wacky: I look at purple and it looks pinkish to me :hmmm:

I've always thought of purple being a bit girly, but whenever it's mentioned in terms of gothic/emo men, purple seems to fit them well.

Not even sure if that there sentence made much sense :/

Interesting color to ask this about. I usually see "is pink a girl's color?" or "should red be worn only by women?" threads.

No, I don't think its a 'girl' color. But I also don't think any certain color belongs to one gender and that gender alone.

Its also my favorite color, so I think it should be a favorite of all genders. :D

It's also a really shit colour.

:(

I'm a guy and I love purple, it's my second favorite color, after pink. I do admit that it is a girl color though.

Purple is my favourite colour.

I think it does tend to be more used by girls than it is by guys, but I really don't see any colour being a guy or girl colour. I don't think colours have genders - last time I checked anyway. I think it's too much of a fuss to go around saying, naaaah - that's way too girly, or guy-ish.

If you like a colour, get on with it. *shrugs* Same goes for pink. If you're a guy and it's your favourite colour, who cares? I think it's a shit colour. :wacky:

The colour purple is really amazing. It is definitely my favourite colour (says me, typing in purple font!)

For me, purple is a mysterious colour. I dont believe it can be subjected to a definition. You cannot associate it with gender, emotion or anything physical. This is what I truly love about this colour.

Purple is a color that I can't see. It always shows up as grey, or depending on the shade, a completely different color. I'll see it as pink or blue most of the time but never as what others have described to me as purple.

Most of the time, it's just grey. So... I'm neutral towards it, really.

Purple isnt necessarily girly imo.

I got nike's airmax with blue violet laces and the shoes had violet colours and it kicked ass!

Blue Violet and Violet is fucking awesome imo and whenever I get a new pair kicks I want those colours!

My favo colours are Green and Brown and lately Violet has won me over.
Leaning towards blue and purple mixed myself.
The darker the better. Im not into the lighter shades cause those do tend to be girly imo.

Honestly I don't think any color is particularly girly. It's the fact that people have perverted colors that even give them a gender role in the first place. I'm not attracted to pink at all as a man. If I see a girl dressed in pink, she is probably not my type.

If I see a guy dressed in pink, I automatically assume his girl wants him to dress that way, or he's trying to pick up women. It's the fact that we associated the color in society to mean "girl" that it is even girly at all.

To me Black is one of the most attractive colors out there. The absence of color amazes me, without it this world would be bland. Blue to me as well is amazing as well, hence my love of a blue eyes girl, or a girl who pulls off a fine blue dress.

Though that doesn't mean that blue is a girl's color, just means " I " prefer it.

So let me get back on topic to say Purple, is worn by more men that I've seen to be honest. I even have it on my leg as the smoke around the tree. It's a great color. It holds no gender though.

I think purple is a fantastic colour. I don’t wear purple though. At least not as a primary colour on my clothes (do Incredible Hulk boxers and socks count?). I do typically prefer to wear black.

Purple was once a colour of the elite, royalty, or those of high status. In antiquity purple dye was hard to make, and it was expensive. They used sea snails to create purple dye and it took a heck of a lot of them to make it.

Later the Victorian purple emerged, and this has become the best purple in my mind. Of this is the purple used by Cadburys, and it is what springs to mind when someone mentions ‘purple’. It’s very rich and full of life, though in an oddly gloomy way.

Purple is a very nice colour. I don’t regard it as feminine, but it has in some instances acquired a gender – though I ignore it. It had a stage when it was turned into a colour for gay pride, etc. That can put a few people off the colour. I think that the characters such as Tinky Winky and Barney the Dinosaur (random examples, and yes, I know these are kids characters, but that perhaps makes the imagery all the more potent), and also the fact that it is a common drag-queen colour, have not helped this particular view of purple when worn by men.

It can also appear as a feminine or girly colour to some. This might be because precious stones (amethyst etc) can be purple, and it is a popular colour for jewellery. Purple is also a popular colour for flowers. Since the love of jewellery and appreciation of flowers of pretty colours are more associated with women than men, perhaps purple acquires a feminine image. Purple dresses for girls and women were / are very popular too, so I guess there is more of a tradition for purple clothes for females than for males.

The associations of purple are very wide though. I don’t regard it as truly feminine. I think purple looks good on females, males, chocolate, or even dogs. Like all colours, purple can have its moments. :argor:

Here I am going to say it is kind of in between. In past it was neither guy or girl color, it was just mainly used by royalty for their cloaks and stuff but only cause they were the only ones who can afford it. But now in our current day it somehow shifted to be viewed as such. I do see it as such cause I hate to use the word to describe a color, it does seem a bit frilly.

*This seems more suitable to Costa Del Sol so I've shifted it over.*

I thought this thread was going to be about the movie. :wacky:

And purple is the king of all colors obviously. As far as being a girly color, I do see more women wearing purple than men but I don't think it's necessarily girly. My fiance would beg to differ though.

Purple IMO is probably the most "Unisex" Colour besides Black and White.

Purple can look incredibly happy. Yet Incredibly sad. It can make someone look fearsome and manly. Yet make then seem small and weak.

It can turn a scene into a ruined mess. Or Make it shine with awesome. Purple comes in so many different shades, one for basically every emotion.

Purple is not clear cut. It has no side. It's True neutral. it works for both genders and almost anything needing it.

Purple is my favourite colour, and IMO one of the best.

Nahh man, I digs teh purple. I don't think it's a girly or girl exclusive color. I love purple. It's my Mom's favorite color though, so that kinda works against me. Anyway, I particularly like light purple colors. Those are fucking amazing. Whenever I see those really dark purple colors, it just makes me feel sick for some reason. Light purple is all relaxing and stuff.

So there...

Where I live, purple is the color of a very popular all boys school. So I've always associated purple as a boy's color.
